Is Alight Motion Free? What the Free Version Does and What It Costs to Drop the Watermark

Yes, Alight Motion is free to download and use, but the free version puts a watermark on every video you export. Its App Store listing says paid memberships remove the watermark and open a library of premium effects, and most of those memberships are billed weekly.

That watermark is the whole story for most people. If you're editing for fun, the free version gives you the full motion design workspace. If you're posting Reels or client work, you'll want it gone. Here's what you get for free, what the paid options cost and what to check before you subscribe, all from Alight Motion's own website and its App Store listing, checked as of October 2026.

What you get in the free version

Alight Motion's own site describes the app as "Free to Try", and the App Store listing says it's free to use with basic features and a watermark on the videos you create. The core editor is the same app either way, so you can learn it before you pay anything.

  • Multiple layers of graphics, video and audio
  • Vector and bitmap support, so you can edit vector graphics on your phone
  • Keyframe animation for every setting, with easing presets or your own timing curves
  • 160+ basic effect building blocks you can combine, according to the App Store listing
  • Grouping, masking, colour adjustment and velocity-based motion blur
  • Export to MP4 video, GIF animation, PNG sequences and stills

The listing also flags that the app contains advertising, so expect ads in the free version.

What a paid membership adds

The App Store description is short and specific: paid membership options remove the watermark and give you access to a regularly updated library of premium effects and features. Nothing on the listing promises more layers or longer exports, so the two things you're paying for are a clean export and the premium effects.

Alight Motion prices on the App Store

The US App Store lists these in-app purchases for Alight Motion as of October 2026. Apple doesn't say which country each price applies to beyond the store you're viewing, and some rows are trial or offer versions of the same plan.

In-app purchase (as listed)Price
Weekly Subscription$4.99
Weekly Subscription$0.99
Weekly with 2 weeks offer 0.99$4.99
Weekly Subscription with Free Trial$4.99
Weekly Cloud Subscription$7.99
Alight Motion with Free Trial$7.99
Monthly Subscription$6.99

Look at the billing period before you tap. Most options are weekly, and a weekly plan at $4.99 adds up far faster than the $6.99 monthly option on the same list. If you can find the monthly plan in the app, it's the one to compare against.

Who makes Alight Motion now

This is the detail most people miss. Alight Motion's website still carries the Alight Creative, Inc. name, but the App Store lists the seller as Bending Spoons Apps ApS, the same developer behind Remini and the Splice video editor app. The listing's subscription terms point to alightcreative.com for support, and the app is updated often: version 6.2.60 shipped on 2 October.

Why it matters: Bending Spoons apps tend to lean on weekly subscriptions, which is exactly what the price list shows. If you've used other Bending Spoons apps, the billing will feel familiar, and if you're still choosing an editor, my list of the best video editing apps for iPhone compares the alternatives.

How to use Alight Motion free without wasting time

  1. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. The website says it works on iPhone, iPad and Android, and the App Store listing adds Mac.
  2. Build your edit in the free version first. Every layer, keyframe and effect building block is there to learn on.
  3. Do a short test export so you can see exactly where the watermark sits and whether you can live with it.
  4. If you need a clean file, check the billing period on each option and pick monthly over weekly if both are offered.
  5. Export everything you need in one sitting, then cancel in your Apple ID settings at least 24 hours before the next period starts.

Cancelling and renewals

The App Store listing says subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the start of the next period, and that you manage them in your Apple ID settings. On a weekly plan that window comes round fast, so set a reminder the day you subscribe.

The listing also says Alight Motion supports Family Sharing, and that some in-app purchases and subscriptions may be shareable with your family group when it's switched on.

Is Alight Motion worth paying for?

If you make motion graphics, text animations or edits for social media on your phone, it's one of the few mobile apps with keyframes on every setting. That's why so many creators stick with it. If you only need quick cuts and captions, a simpler editor may do the job; my list of free video editors with no watermark is the place to compare before you subscribe. In 23 years in marketing, the tools that last are the ones you can test in full before you pay, and Alight Motion lets you do exactly that up to the export.

My verdict: is Alight Motion free?

Free to learn, paid to publish cleanly. You get the whole editor at no cost, with ads and a watermark on exports. To remove the watermark you'll need a membership, and as of October 2026 the US App Store listed weekly plans from $4.99 and a monthly plan at $6.99. Build your edit free, test the export, then pay only when you've got something worth posting.
