How Much Does YouTube Pay per 1,000 Views in New Zealand?

YouTube doesn't publish a rate per 1,000 views for New Zealand; your RPM depends on where your viewers are, your topic and your ad formats, and you can see it in YouTube Studio. New Zealand is on both YouTube Partner Program lists, and earnings are paid by EFT only, in New Zealand dollars, once your AdSense balance reaches 130 NZD.

Kiwi creators get a lot right on YouTube: English-language content, a reputation for good storytelling and an audience that often stretches well beyond New Zealand. When it comes to the money, though, there's no published New Zealand rate per 1,000 views. What YouTube and Google do publish is surprisingly specific, from the single payment method on offer to the exact threshold in New Zealand dollars. I'll walk you through the lot.

New Zealand's place on the YouTube Partner Program lists

New Zealand is on YouTube's main list of places where creators can sign up for the YouTube Partner Program. It's also on the expanded programme list, which means two separate milestones for a Kiwi channel.

Norfolk Island appears as its own entry on YouTube's list, so creators there should check that entry rather than assume they're covered by New Zealand's.

EFT is the only payout route for Kiwi creators

This is the thing I'd want every New Zealand creator to know before they sign up. In YouTube's payment method table, New Zealand has EFT and nothing else. No cheques, no wire transfer, no Hyperwallet. Compare that with Australia, which YouTube lists with both EFT and wire.

In practice that's fine for most people, because EFT is fast: AdSense says the money lands up to seven business days after it's issued, in your local currency. But it does mean your bank details need to be right first time, because there's no fallback option if they aren't. Google lists New Zealand as test deposit required, so expect a small deposit you'll need to confirm inside AdSense before your first payout.

The New Zealand dollar thresholds

AdSense publishes thresholds for the New Zealand dollar (NZD), and they're worth writing down:

  • Payment threshold: 130 NZD. Your balance has to reach this before Google pays out.
  • Payment method threshold: 15 NZD. The point at which you'll be asked to add your payment details.
  • Cancellation threshold: 15 NZD. Relevant if you ever close your account.

Google's monthly cycle runs the same way everywhere. Each month's earnings are finalised on the 3rd of the following month, your balance must be over the threshold with your details in place by the 20th, and the payment is issued between the 21st and the 26th. If you're under 130 NZD, the balance simply carries forward.

Reading your own RPM as a New Zealand creator

YouTube's term for earnings per 1,000 views is RPM, revenue per mille. It's measured after YouTube's revenue share and blends ads with memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and YouTube Premium revenue. Because it includes every view, even those without an ad, it sits below CPM, which is the advertiser's cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube's cut.

For Kiwi channels, these are the levers I'd watch:

  1. Where your viewers sit. A New Zealand channel can draw big audiences in Australia, the UK and the US, and advertisers in each of those countries pay differently. Shifts in that mix explain most RPM swings.
  2. Your subject. Topics like property, investing, outdoor gear and travel planning tend to attract more advertisers than broad entertainment.
  3. Your format. YouTube suggests mid-roll ads on longer videos, monetising every eligible upload and enabling memberships or Super Chat to raise RPM.

Open YouTube Studio, choose Analytics, then Revenue, and set the date range you care about. Check the Geography report next to it and the reasons behind your figure usually jump out.

US tax withholding for creators in New Zealand

Since many Kiwi channels pick up American viewers, the US tax form matters. YouTube asks creators outside the US to submit US tax info in AdSense, and says withholding on earnings from US viewers then sits between 0 and 30%, depending on whether your country has a tax treaty with the US. New Zealand is on the IRS list of US income tax treaties. If you don't submit the form, YouTube's default for individual accounts is 24% of everything you earn worldwide.

That's YouTube's documentation, not advice from me. A New Zealand accountant can tell you how the income is treated at home.

Other ways NZ YouTubers earn

AdSense is one income stream, not the whole plan. Brand partnerships with local and Australian businesses, affiliate links, workshops and your own products often outearn ads for smaller channels. If you're building a channel around expertise, my guide to learning SEO from YouTube shows how teaching content attracts a valuable audience. And for a euro-area comparison, here's how YouTube pays creators in Ireland, another English-language market with a big overseas audience.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make money on YouTube in New Zealand?

Yes. New Zealand is on both YouTube's Partner Program list and its expanded list, so you can earn fan funding from 500 subscribers and ad revenue from 1,000.

What is the YouTube payout threshold in New Zealand?

AdSense lists a payment threshold of 130 NZD. Until your balance reaches it, earnings roll forward month to month.

Can I get YouTube payments by wire transfer in New Zealand?

Not according to YouTube's payment table. New Zealand shows EFT as the only payment method, with no wire, cheque or Hyperwallet option.

How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views in New Zealand?

There's no published New Zealand rate. Your RPM depends on where your viewers are, your topic and your ad setup, and YouTube Studio shows your own figure.

Do New Zealand YouTubers have US tax withheld?

YouTube may withhold tax on earnings from US viewers. It says the rate ranges from 0 to 30% depending on treaties, and New Zealand is on the IRS treaty list. Check your own position with a local accountant.
