YouTube Channel Hacked? How to Recover It, Step by Step

If your YouTube channel is hacked, recover and secure the Google Account linked to it first, then revert unwanted changes on the channel, then tighten security. If it was terminated after the takeover, appeal once your Google Account is recovered.

If your YouTube channel has been hacked, I know how sick that feels. A channel can hold years of work, a following and the trust of your viewers, and seeing it taken over in an afternoon is horrible. Take a breath. There is a route back, and YouTube has a clear process for it.

This page follows YouTube's own recovery guidance. I'm not a recovery service and I can't get your account back for you, but I can show you the official order of steps, which is the thing that matters most when you're stressed and want to act fast.

Signs your YouTube channel has been hacked

Before you do anything, check that the channel really has been taken over. YouTube's help says every channel is tied to at least one Google Account, and when a channel is hacked it means at least one of those accounts has been compromised. These are the signs it lists:

  • Changes you didn't make: a different profile picture, new descriptions, altered email settings, a changed AdSense association or sent messages you didn't write.
  • Videos uploaded that aren't yours, posted as your account. You may get emails about penalties or strikes against bad content.

YouTube says accounts get compromised in several ways, including harmful content (malware) and deceptive emails that pretend to be a service you know (phishing). It advises never sharing your email address and password with others, and never downloading files or software from a source you don't trust.

The three-step order for a hacked YouTube channel

YouTube's guidance has three steps, and the order matters because the channel can't be fixed until the linked Google Account is safe.

  1. Recover and secure the hacked Google Account that's linked to the channel.
  2. Revert the unwanted changes on the channel straight away, so you avoid policy trouble such as Community Guidelines or copyright strikes.
  3. Reduce the risk of it happening again by following security good practice with everyone who has access to the channel.

Step one: getting back into the Google Account behind the channel

What you do depends on whether you can still sign in.

If you can still sign in to your Google Account

YouTube says to update your password and secure your Google Account straight away, then move on to the next step. Pick a strong password you haven't used anywhere else.

If you can't sign in to your Google Account

  1. Follow Google's account recovery steps for your account or Gmail address.
  2. Answer the questions as best you can. They're there to confirm that it's your account.
  3. If you get stuck, use the tips Google gives for completing the recovery steps.
  4. When prompted, reset your password to a strong one you haven't used with this account before.

YouTube also asks you to get your channel managers and owners to secure their own Google Accounts in the same way. A channel is only as safe as its weakest login.

Step two: cleaning up your hacked YouTube channel

Once you're back in, look through the channel for anything you didn't do. YouTube's help says to delete any videos you didn't upload immediately, because everything on YouTube has to comply with the Community Guidelines, including content someone else posted as you.

Check your channel name, picture, description, links and email settings too, and put back anything that was altered. YouTube has a separate guide on cleaning up a hacked channel if you need more detail.

If your YouTube channel was terminated after the takeover

This is the part that frightens people most. YouTube's help says that once you've recovered your Google Account, you'll find an email with details on how to appeal the termination in your inbox, and you can then appeal using its form. It warns that an appeal may not be accepted if the account recovery is incomplete, so finish step one first.

My separate page on transferring a YouTube channel to another email is a different job, but it's worth reading afterwards, because it shows how ownership is tied to an account.

Getting more help for a hacked YouTube channel

If you're an eligible creator, such as someone in the YouTube Partner Program, and you've already recovered your Google Account, YouTube says you can get in touch with Creator Support for more help. If you can't reach that team, it points to @TeamYouTube on X.

There's a time limit worth knowing. YouTube says support is limited to potential account takeover incidents that happened within the past 9 months, because of its data retention policy. If yours was longer ago, it may not be able to recover the channel. So don't sit on it.

Please be careful here. Taken-over accounts attract scammers. Don't hand over codes, passwords or personal details to anyone offering to get your account back, and don't use unofficial recovery services. YouTube's route is through its own help pages and Creator Support, and nobody can shortcut it for you. If someone is threatening you, report it to the platform, and if you're in danger, contact the police.

Locking down a YouTube channel after a takeover

YouTube's guidance for the last step is practical. Here's what it recommends:

  • Make sure you and everyone on your team have secured your accounts.
  • Use the Channel Permissions tool and the Brand Account tools so only authorised accounts can manage the channel, and only at the level you want.
  • Don't share passwords or sign-in details with anyone. The only access to your channel should be through accounts you've authorised.
  • Use a different email address for your YouTube channel than the one you use for other accounts. If you reuse one and someone gets in, they can take over several accounts at once.

It's also sensible to sign out of devices you no longer use. My guide to signing out of YouTube covers it on each device, and switching accounts on YouTube helps you check which login you're using for the channel.

Knowing whether the hacker has really left your YouTube channel

YouTube is honest about this one. Its help says it's not always possible for it to determine that the hijacker has been removed. So after you've recovered the channel, review everything again and make sure your Google Account is secure. Check who has manager or owner access, look at recent uploads and keep an eye on your email for notices from YouTube.
