How to Recover a Deleted YouTube Channel (Hidden vs Deleted)

Whether you can recover a YouTube channel depends on whether it was hidden or deleted. A hidden channel can be restored by signing in and filling out the create-a-channel form. A permanently deleted channel loses its videos, comments and playlists, and YouTube warns recovery may not be possible, though Brand Accounts can sometimes be restored for a limited time.

If your channel has vanished, don't panic yet. YouTube treats "hidden" and "deleted" very differently, and many channels people think are deleted are only hidden. Hidden channels come back with everything intact. Permanently deleted ones mostly don't. Here's how to tell which you're facing, and the exact steps that restore a hidden channel without accidentally creating a brand-new one.

What you might seeYour YouTube channel has content but has been disabledThe channel is simply gone

If you see the message that your channel has content but has been disabled, that's good news. YouTube says it means the channel is hidden, not deleted.

How to restore a hidden YouTube channel

  1. Sign in to YouTube with the account that owns the channel.
  2. Go to the option to create a channel and fill out the form.
  3. Don't click the link to use a business or other name. YouTube warns that creates a new channel instead of restoring your hidden one.
  4. Once it's restored, make your videos and playlists visible again from your Videos page.

YouTube says that when a channel has been hidden, view counts may be inaccurate, and after you make it visible again it can take up to a week for them to update. So don't worry if your numbers look low for a few days.

If the channel belongs to a Brand Account

Many business channels sit on a Brand Account rather than a personal one. To restore a hidden Brand Account channel, YouTube's steps are: open Settings, go to Account, choose Add or manage your channel(s), and select the hidden channel. If the Brand Account itself was deleted, Google's help says it can be restored from the Brand Accounts section of your Google Account, but only for a limited time.

If you permanently deleted the channel

This is the hard truth. YouTube says closing your channel permanently deletes your content, including videos, comments, messages, playlists and history, and that if you choose to permanently delete it, YouTube may have a harder time recovering your account. There's no restore button for a permanently deleted personal channel. Once it's gone, the channel name and URL also disappear from YouTube Analytics.

Your best options at that point are practical ones: re-upload videos from your own files, recreate the channel, and tell your audience where to find you.

Deleted because the Google Account was deleted

YouTube also says that if you delete the primary owner account linked to your channel, the channel is deleted too. If someone closed an old Google Account without realising a channel was attached, the channel goes with it. If the account was deleted very recently, try Google's account recovery straight away, because recovery windows are short.

Channel removed by YouTube, not by you

If YouTube terminated your channel for breaking its rules, that's not a deletion you can undo with these steps. It's an appeal process, which runs through YouTube's policy and appeals system rather than the hide and restore settings. If you think your account was taken over and then deleted, treat it as a hacked account first and secure your Google Account. If only a few videos have gone rather than the whole channel, my guide to deleting a YouTube video explains what removal does and doesn't keep.

Getting your audience back after a deletion

If the channel is gone for good, move quickly so your viewers don't drift away. Create the new channel with the same name and a matching handle if it's available, re-upload your best-performing videos first, and post on your other social profiles and email list to tell people where to find you. Pin a short welcome video explaining what happened. Most loyal viewers will follow you if you make it easy.

How to avoid losing a channel again

  • Hide your channel instead of deleting it if you just want a break. YouTube lets you re-enable a hidden channel later.
  • Keep copies of every video you upload, outside YouTube.
  • Use a Brand Account for business channels and add a second owner, so one person leaving doesn't put the channel at risk.
  • Never delete an old Google Account without checking what's attached to it.

Once you're back up and running, check who subscribed to your YouTube channel to see what came back with it.

My verdict

Check whether your channel is hidden or deleted before anything else. Hidden channels come back through the create-a-channel form, as long as you don't click the business name link. Permanently deleted channels usually don't come back, so next time, hide rather than delete, and keep your own copies of every video.
