Wise in South Africa: Rand Payments and SARB Approval (2026)

South Africa is one of the places Wise lists for holding a balance, and Wise says it received conditional approval from the South African Reserve Bank in 2025. Its help page says rand can be sent to South African bank accounts, up to the equivalent of 1 million pounds, but you can't currently send from rand. Check what the app offers you.

South Africa is the one country in this group where Wise has a clear regulatory story, so it's worth being precise about what's confirmed and what isn't. I've read Wise's help page on rand transfers, its page on where you can hold a balance and its newsroom release about the South African licence. Here is what they say, in plain English.

South Africa on Wise's list of places to hold a balance

The Wise page I read about where you can open a Wise balance lists South Africa, with no additional restrictions noted. Many countries in the same group aren't on that list, so this is a real difference. Wise's ZAR page also says rand details come with a Wise account, and that the currencies you can receive depend on your location. So your own app is the final word on which details you'll see.

The South African Reserve Bank approval

Wise's newsroom says that in 2025 it received conditional approval from the South African Reserve Bank to operate as a Category 2 Authorised Dealer in Foreign Exchange with Limited Authority. It calls this its first regulatory approval in Africa. The release says Wise will offer transfers for personal customers in South Africa, but it doesn't spell out the conditions.

That wording matters. Conditional approval isn't the same as a full product launch, and I haven't found anything on Wise's pages that tells me exactly which features are live for you today. Treat the approval as a good sign, and the app as the source for what's switched on.

Paying rand into a South African bank account

Wise's ZAR guide says you can send rand to individual and business bank accounts in South Africa only. For a personal recipient, the sender needs a full name, date of birth, local account number, bank name, BIC/Swift and an email address. The local account number is 7-11 digits. Wise says it can't send rand to Namibia or Swaziland/Eswatini.

What I checkedWhat Wise says for South Africa
Where rand can goIndividual and business bank accounts in South Africa only
Biggest transferThe equivalent of 1 million GBP
Swift thresholdPayments over 21,000 GBP or equivalent go through Swift
ArrivalUsually 0-1 working days once converted
Time to convertCan take up to 2 working days
Account number7-11 digits for a local account

The Swift step for larger payments

Wise says payments over 21,000 GBP or equivalent are sent through the Swift network. That tends to mean a slightly different journey for big invoices, so if your client is paying a large amount, ask them to check the delivery estimate Wise shows. For smaller payments Wise says it usually takes 0-1 working days to arrive after conversion, and conversion can take up to 2 working days.

Why you can't send from rand

Wise says you can't currently send from ZAR. In everyday terms, you can't pay for a Wise transfer using rand from a South African bank account. That's the opposite of what many South Africans want when they're sending money abroad, so if that's your goal, check the live options in the Wise app rather than relying on this guide.

Wise's own marketing page for South Africa lists rand among currencies you can hold, but it doesn't name a South African regulator, which is another reason to read the newsroom release and the app together.

What this means if you're paid in pounds or dollars

The simplest reading of Wise's pages is that a client abroad can pay through Wise, Wise converts the money, and rand lands in your South African bank account. That is the part the ZAR guide documents in detail. What it doesn't do is promise you a particular fee, so ask your client to look at the amount Wise quotes at checkout and tell you what you'll receive in rand before the invoice is paid.

If your client has a choice of tools, they'll often pick the one they already use. That's fine. Send them the account details in writing, keep the wording simple and tell them which currency you'd like to receive.

Setting up what you tell clients

  1. Check in the Wise app which details are offered to you, since the currencies depend on your location.
  2. If the client is abroad, ask them to pay through Wise to your South African bank account.
  3. Give the full account number, the bank name and the BIC/Swift code.
  4. Tell the client the arrival estimate, and allow for the two working days of conversion.
  5. Keep records, and ask an accountant about tax and exchange control.

Comparing Wise with other options in South Africa

Freelancers in Johannesburg and Cape Town usually compare a couple of tools before they pick. I've covered how Payoneer works in South Africa and what PayPal does for South African users, and the rules differ a lot from Wise's. For a view of how a business-focused route looks in another country, Wise in India is a useful contrast.

I'm not able to advise on tax or exchange control. Please check with your bank, and with a local accountant, before you move any large sum.
