Why Isn't TikTok Letting Me Follow Anyone? Here's What's Going On

The short version: TikTok is almost certainly rate-limiting or flagging you because you followed too many accounts too fast, you're on a brand new account, or the app has glitched. The fix is usually waiting 24 to 48 hours and following people slowly and manually, not filing a support ticket that nobody reads. If you were using any kind of follow-for-follow tactic or growth tool, that's very likely the actual cause, whether you meant to trigger it or not.

What "TikTok won't let me follow" looks like

There are two different problems people mean when they say this, and they need different fixes.

To put a number on it, the free TikTok money calculator estimates programme and brand deal earnings from your views and followers.

  • You tap "Follow" and nothing happens, or it flickers back to "Follow" instead of switching to "Following"
  • You get a pop-up saying something like "Try again later" or "This action is currently restricted"

The first one is usually a bug or connection issue. The second one is TikTok's spam-prevention system doing exactly what it's designed to do. I've had both happen on client accounts, and they need completely different responses.

The five real reasons this happens

1. You've hit the daily follow limit

TikTok caps how many accounts you can follow in a day, and the cap depends on your account's age and trust level. New accounts (under about 30 days old) are typically limited to somewhere around 100 to 150 follows per day. Older, more established accounts can usually go higher, but nobody publishes an exact figure because TikTok changes it based on your behaviour patterns, not a fixed rule for everyone.

If you've been on a following spree, going through a niche hashtag and following 40 accounts in ten minutes, you've probably blown past a threshold TikTok watches for, even if the raw daily total feels low.

2. TikTok has flagged the behaviour as spammy

This is the one nobody wants to hear, but it's the honest answer for most people asking this question: TikTok's spam detection doesn't care about your intent, only your pattern. Following and unfollowing the same accounts repeatedly, following dozens of strangers in a short burst, or following accounts that have nothing in common with anything you've engaged with before all look identical to bot behaviour from TikTok's side.

I worked with a small e-commerce client last year who wanted to build a niche following fast. Her social media manager (not me, I inherited the account afterwards) had manually gone through a competitor's followers and followed roughly 300 of them over two days to try to "borrow" that audience. By day two, the account couldn't follow anyone at all, not even accounts it had followed before without issue. It took nine days of doing nothing but normal posting and organic engagement before the follow button worked reliably again. TikTok never sent an email, never explained anything, it just quietly lifted the block.

If you've used any third-party app, browser extension, or "auto follow" tool that promises to grow your following on autopilot, this is very likely what's happening to you, whether or not you're willing to admit you tried one.

3. Your account is too new

Brand new TikTok accounts get watched more closely than established ones. TikTok wants to see a pattern of normal human use, browsing, watching, liking, commenting, before it trusts you to follow at volume. If your account is a few days old and you're trying to follow 50 people to build a feed, TikTok may throttle you specifically because you're new, not because you did anything wrong.

4. Something is broken on the app's end

Sometimes it really is just a bug. TikTok updates constantly, and follow buttons breaking after an update isn't rare. A cracked or outdated app version, a poor connection, or a corrupted cache can all make the follow action fail silently. This is the easiest one to rule out and the one people usually check last.

5. Your account is restricted or under review

If you've had content removed for community guidelines violations, had reports filed against you, or TikTok's automated systems have otherwise flagged your account for review, following (and sometimes commenting) can be limited as part of that restriction. This tends to come with other symptoms too, reduced reach, comments not posting, or a notice in your settings.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Force close and reopen the app. Sounds too simple, but it clears temporary glitches more often than people expect.
  2. Check for an app update. Go to the App Store or Google Play and update TikTok if there's a pending version. Bugs in follow functionality get patched regularly.
  3. Clear the app cache. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > TikTok > Storage > Clear Cache. On iPhone, you'll need to offload and reinstall the app since iOS doesn't offer a direct cache clear.
  4. Stop trying for 24 to 48 hours. If it's a rate limit or spam flag, this is the fix. Repeatedly tapping follow during a restriction can extend it, not shorten it.
  5. Switch to wifi or mobile data, whichever you weren't using, to rule out a connection issue.
  6. Check your account status under Settings and Privacy > Account. Look for anything mentioning restrictions or violations.
  7. Follow slowly once it's working again. Space follows out, ten or fifteen an hour rather than fifty in five minutes, and follow accounts you've watched content from. This rebuilds trust with TikTok's system faster than anything else.

The uncomfortable bit about growth hacks

Most articles on this topic list the same generic fixes and skip the part that matters for a lot of people reading this: if you were trying to grow fast, following strangers in bulk to build an audience or reciprocate follows from a hashtag community, you triggered this yourself. That's not a criticism, everyone wants faster growth, but the fix isn't a settings tweak, it's slowing down. TikTok's whole algorithm is built to reward accounts that behave like real people scrolling and engaging naturally, and it actively punishes anything that looks automated or transactional, including manual follow sprees that just happen to look automated. If you run a business account and outsource social media, ask whoever manages it directly whether they've used a follow tool, because "I don't know why this happened" and "someone used a growth app on my account" get the same fix, but only one of them means it will happen again.

What not to do

  • Don't log out and back in repeatedly trying to reset it, this can trigger further security checks
  • Don't download random "TikTok follow limit fix" apps, several are outright scams asking for your login
  • Don't keep spam-tapping the follow button, TikTok's system reads this as more of the same suspicious behaviour
  • Don't switch VPN locations while troubleshooting, logging in from multiple regions in a short window is itself a spam signal

When it's worth contacting TikTok support

If the block lasts more than a week with no explanation and you haven't done anything resembling bulk following, it's worth reporting through the in-app Settings and Privacy > Report a Problem flow. Be specific: date it started, what you'd done in the 24 hours before, and screenshots of the error message. Generic complaints get generic auto-replies. Specific ones occasionally get a human to look at your account, particularly if you can show the account has been used normally for months.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a TikTok follow block usually last?

Most rate limit or spam flags clear within 24 to 48 hours of normal, low-volume activity. Bigger flags, like the case I described above, can take a week or more, especially if the account had followed a large batch of people in a short window.

Does TikTok have a limit on how many accounts you can follow in total?

TikTok has previously enforced a total following cap similar to Instagram's, and while the exact current number isn't published consistently, accounts that follow thousands of others without a matching, organic follower base are more likely to get scrutinised or restricted regardless of the total figure.

Can I speed up getting the follow function back?

Not really, and trying to force it usually backfires. Stopping all follow attempts, using the app normally for likes and comments, and waiting it out is the most reliable path back to normal function.

Is this the same as being shadowbanned?

Not exactly. A shadowban affects how widely your content is shown to others. A follow restriction is a separate, narrower block on the follow action itself, though both can stem from the same root cause: TikTok's systems flagging your account as behaving unnaturally.
