To delete a contact in WhatsApp, open a chat with the person, tap their name at the top, choose Edit (or the three dots menu), then tap Delete contact. If your version doesn't show that option, delete the person in your phone's Contacts app and WhatsApp will catch up. Your chat history stays, and the person isn't told.
WhatsApp doesn't keep a separate address book for most people. It reads the contacts already saved on your phone, which is why the answer shifts a little depending on which version of the app you're using. I've set this out as the questions people ask most, so you can jump straight to the one that matches your situation.
Can I delete a contact from inside WhatsApp?
Newer versions let you do it without leaving the app. Here's the route.
- Open WhatsApp, then open a chat with the person. If you don't have a chat yet, tap New chat and find them in the list.
- Tap their name at the top of the chat to open their contact info.
- Tap Edit, or the three dots menu if your version shows that instead.
- Choose Delete contact and confirm.
Contacts you saved to WhatsApp only are removed the same way. Those people never lived in your phone's address book, so this is the only place to delete them.
Menus move around between versions. If a name looks different on your screen, search the app's settings for the word contact and you'll usually land in the right place.
What if my version doesn't have a Delete contact option?
Then use your phone. Because WhatsApp reads your address book, removing the person there is enough.
- Open the Contacts app on your phone, the one you'd use to make a call.
- Find the person and open their card.
- Choose Edit or the menu, then Delete contact.
- Go back to WhatsApp and check the list.
On Android, WhatsApp sometimes needs a nudge before it notices. Tap New chat, then the three dots menu, then Refresh. The list reloads from your address book and the deleted person drops out. On an iPhone the list normally updates by itself when you reopen the app.
If you've got a lot of people to clear out, the phone's Contacts app is also the quicker place. Many phones let you select several contacts at once, which beats opening chat after chat in WhatsApp.
Will the person know I deleted them?
No. WhatsApp doesn't send them a message, an alert or a hint that you removed them from your list. Deleting a contact only changes what's saved on your own phone, so nothing on their side moves.
What does change is how they look to you. Their name disappears and their phone number shows in its place. If you ever see the reverse, with numbers where you expect names, our guide on why WhatsApp isn't showing contact names walks through the usual causes.
Does deleting a contact delete our chat?
No. The chat history stays exactly where it was. The only visible difference is the header, which now shows a number instead of a name.
If you want the conversation gone too, press and hold the chat in your chat list, then choose Delete. Treat that as a separate decision and make it carefully, because a deleted chat is gone from that phone. If it's a conversation you might want later, keep it.
Can they still message me after I delete them?
Yes. Deleting a contact isn't blocking. The person can still write to you, and their messages arrive as normal, just from a number rather than a name. To stop messages reaching you, you need to block them: open the chat, tap the name or number at the top, and look for Block.
A simple way to hold it in your head: delete changes your address book, and block changes who can reach you. They're two different tools, and most of the confusion comes from mixing them up.

| What you want | What to do | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a name from my list | Delete the contact | Their number shows instead of their name |
| Remove the conversation | Press and hold the chat, then Delete | The chat disappears from that phone |
| Stop them messaging me | Block the contact | Their messages stop reaching you |
What about people who only appear as a number?
A number appears when someone isn't saved on your phone. That's normal for people in groups you've joined or anyone who wrote to you first. You can't delete a number you never saved, because there's nothing to delete.
If a chat with a stranger is cluttering your list, delete the chat. If the messages are unwanted, block the number as well. Neither step involves your address book at all.
I use WhatsApp Business. Is it different?
The idea is the same: a contact is a saved number, and the chat is a separate thing. If you deal with lots of customers, our guide to organising and managing contacts in WhatsApp Business covers keeping things tidy so you're not deleting people one at a time.
A quick tidy-up routine that works
If you're deleting because your WhatsApp list has become a mess, this order saves time.
- Clear unwanted people out of the phone's Contacts app first.
- Refresh WhatsApp's list on Android, or reopen the app on an iPhone.
- Delete old chats you don't need as a separate step.
- Block anyone who shouldn't be able to message you.
- Check who sees your Status if that was part of the reason for the clean-up.
That last point trips people up. Removing someone from your phone doesn't always change who sees what you post. If your updates aren't reaching certain people, the problem is often a setting rather than a contact, and the guide on WhatsApp Status not showing to some contacts covers it.
What if I delete the wrong person?
It happens, and it's easy to fix. The chat is still there, so tap the number at the top, save it as a new contact, and the name comes back. If you can't remember who the number belongs to, scroll through the chat and the conversation will usually jog your memory.
I'd also say this: deleting contacts is low risk, but double-check before you remove someone you might need, like a school, a doctor or a delivery driver. It takes seconds to add a number back, but you'll only do it if you remember who it was.
Frequently asked questions
Is deleting a WhatsApp contact the same as blocking them?
No. Deleting a contact removes their name from your list. Blocking stops their messages and calls reaching you. After you delete someone, they can still message you unless you also block them.
Can I delete a contact without deleting the chat?
Yes. The chat stays in your list and shows the person's number instead of their name. To remove the chat too, press and hold it and choose Delete.
Does the person get a notification when I delete them?
No. WhatsApp doesn't tell them. Deleting a contact only changes what's saved on your own phone.
Why does a deleted contact still show in WhatsApp?
Usually the list hasn't refreshed yet, or the person is still saved somewhere on your phone. Delete them from the phone's Contacts app, then on Android tap New chat, the three dots menu and Refresh.
