Why Is Instagram in a Different Language?

The short version: Instagram shows a different language because of your phone's system language, your Instagram app language setting, your IP address and location, or sometimes a glitch after an app update. Nine times out of ten you can fix it yourself in the app settings without reinstalling anything or contacting Instagram support, who won't reply anyway.

This one lands in my inbox more often than you'd think, usually from business owners travelling for work or from someone who's just handed their phone to a relative abroad and got it back set to Portuguese. It's annoying, it looks broken, and most of the advice online tells you to "check your settings" without saying which settings or where they are. So let's sort it.

The four real reasons Instagram changes language

There isn't one single cause. It's usually one of these:

  • Your phone's system language changed. Instagram, by default, follows your device language. If your iPhone or Android handset language got changed (by you, by a sibling messing about, or by a factory reset), Instagram follows along automatically.
  • Your Instagram-specific language setting is different from your phone. You can set a language inside the app itself that overrides the phone. If someone set this manually at some point, it sticks even if your phone language is fine.
  • You're connected to a VPN or you've travelled. Instagram sometimes uses IP location to suggest a regional language, particularly on first login from a new country or network.
  • A bug after an app update. This happens more than Meta would like to admit. Instagram pushes an update, something in the localisation file doesn't load correctly, and users get a half-translated or wrong-language interface until the next patch.

A worked example: say you run a small online store

Say you run a small online store selling candles, and you manage your Instagram business account from your phone and occasionally from a shared iPad in the stockroom. One morning you open the app and the whole interface is in Spanish. Nobody in your team speaks Spanish, nobody travelled, and you didn't touch any settings.

Here's what's happened in most cases like this: someone logged into the account from the iPad using a different Apple ID whose region is set to Spain, or the iPad's system language got changed during a software update and defaulted back to a region setting from when it was first purchased. Either way, the fix is the same two-minute process, not a reinstall, not a password reset, and definitely not a support ticket, because Instagram's own help centre documentation admits response times for general account issues can run into days.

Step by step: how to change the language back

On the Instagram app itself:

  • Go to your profile, tap the three lines top right, then Settings and privacy.
  • Scroll to Accessibility, then language, or on older app versions it's listed under "Language" directly.
  • Tap Language and select English, or whichever language you want. This overrides whatever the phone is doing.

If the menu itself is in a language you can't read, look for the gear or hamburger icon (three lines), then look for a word that resembles "Configuración," "Paramètres," or "Impostazioni" (these are Settings in Spanish, French and Italian respectively), tap it, then look for a flag icon or the word "Idioma," "Langue," or "Lingua" (Language). Tap it and scroll to find English in the list; it's almost always written as "English" regardless of what language surrounds it.

If that doesn't fix it, check your phone's system language too: on iPhone it's Settings, General, Language and Region; on Android it's Settings, System, Languages and input. Match both to be sure Instagram has no conflicting instruction.

The uncomfortable bit nobody mentions

Most posts about this topic treat it as a one-off annoyance you fix and forget. It isn't, always. If you manage a business account with multiple logged-in devices, shared logins, or a social media manager working from their own laptop and phone, language mismatches will keep happening because every device carries its own system settings and every login can quietly override the others. The fix isn't a one-time setting change, it's tightening who has access and how. If you're handing Instagram logins to freelancers, interns or agency staff, that's also exactly the kind of access sprawl that causes bigger problems than language glitches, things like someone changing your payout account details without you noticing, or a careless click losing your verification status. Treat a language switch as the small warning sign it is: check who's logged in, not just what language the menu says.

Go to Settings and privacy, then Accounts Centre, then "Where you're logged in" to see every active session. If you see a device you don't recognise, log it out immediately.

Why this matters more for business accounts

If you're running a business page, language confusion isn't just cosmetic. It slows you down when you're trying to reply to a customer DM fast, especially one carrying a business chat label that signals a genuine enquiry. It makes it harder to find the right menu to copy a caption for reposting, or to locate the sticker tray when you're trying to add a quick heart filter to a story for a product launch. Small UI frictions like this cost real minutes across a working week, and for a solo founder or a tiny team, minutes add up fast.

What to do if nothing fixes it

If you've matched both your phone and app language and it still reverts, try these in order:

  • Force close the app completely and reopen it rather than just switching away.
  • Check for a pending Instagram app update in the App Store or Google Play; a stuck update is a common cause of language bugs.
  • Log out and back in on that one device only, leaving other sessions untouched.
  • As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall the app, which clears any corrupted local cache.

If you operate across different countries, worth knowing that Instagram's availability and behaviour also varies by region for reasons that have nothing to do with language settings. If you've ever wondered about access rather than translation, it's a different issue entirely, similar in spirit to questions people ask about whether Instagram is banned in the UAE, where the platform's behaviour is shaped by local regulation rather than a setting you can toggle.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Instagram suddenly switch to another language?

Usually your phone's system language changed, someone set a different language inside the Instagram app itself, or you logged in from a new device or country whose settings differ from your usual one. Check Settings and privacy, then Language, inside the app first.

Can a VPN change my Instagram language?

Yes, in some cases Instagram uses your IP address to suggest a regional language on a new login, which a VPN can trigger if it's routing you through a server in another country.

Does changing my phone's language also change Instagram's?

Instagram follows your phone's system language by default unless you've manually set a different language inside the app, in which case the in-app setting takes priority.

Why does my Instagram keep reverting to a foreign language even after I fix it?

This usually means multiple devices or accounts are logged into the same profile with different system languages, so check Settings and privacy, then Accounts Centre, then "Where you're logged in" to see and remove any device you don't recognise.
