How to Get Verified on Threads: It Starts on Instagram

You can't get verified on Threads directly. The badge comes from Instagram: either you hold Instagram's verified badge, or you sign up for Meta Verified on Instagram and connect your Threads profile to the same Meta Account, and the badge then appears on Threads automatically.

Threads has no verification settings of its own, which confuses a lot of people looking for the button. Meta runs it all through Instagram. Here's how it works, from Meta's help centre.

The two ways to a verified badge

RouteHow it works
Instagram's verified badgeApply on Instagram as a well-known person or brand that meets Meta's requirements
Meta VerifiedSign up on Instagram, then connect Threads to the same Meta Account

Meta's Threads article is clear that you can't sign up for Meta Verified directly on Threads. You do it on Instagram, then make sure your Threads profile sits in the same Meta Account as your verified Instagram profile. When both are in place, the badge appears on Threads automatically. Meta notes that adding Threads to your Meta Account is still rolling out and isn't available everywhere yet.

What Instagram checks for the notable badge

If you're going for the traditional badge, Instagram's requirements are:

  • Authentic: a real person, registered business or entity.
  • Unique: one account per person or business, except language-specific accounts; general interest accounts aren't verified.
  • Complete: a public account with a bio and profile photo, active when you apply.
  • Notable: well known and highly searched for, featured in multiple news sources. Promotional content isn't counted as a source.

What you get on Threads, and what you don't

Here's the catch. Meta says only the verified badge shows on Threads. The other Meta Verified benefits, such as enhanced support and impersonation protection, aren't available on Threads. So if those extras are why you're interested, they apply on Instagram, not here.

The rules that come with it

  • You can't change your Threads profile picture on Threads; it carries over from your verified Instagram profile, so change it there.
  • Your Threads name and username have to match your verified Instagram profile. If they don't, you lose the badge on Threads.
  • Delete your verified Instagram profile and the badge disappears from Threads too.

How to set it up, step by step

  1. Get verified on Instagram first, through the notable badge or Meta Verified.
  2. Open your Meta Account settings and check your Threads profile is connected to the same Meta Account as the verified Instagram profile.
  3. Make sure your Threads name and username match Instagram exactly.
  4. Open Threads and check the badge has appeared.

Common reasons the badge doesn't show

  • Threads isn't in the same Meta Account as the verified Instagram profile. This is the most common one, and it's fixed in your Meta Account settings.
  • Adding Threads to your Meta Account hasn't reached your region yet; Meta says it's rolling out slowly.
  • Your Threads name or username was changed and no longer matches Instagram.
  • The Meta Verified sign-up was made on a different Instagram profile from the one Threads is linked to.

What the badge does and doesn't mean

Instagram's help centre says the verified badge now means Meta has confirmed the account is the authentic presence of that person or brand. It used to require being notable and unique as well, which is why you'll still see older badges that represent the previous rules. Meta is clear that the badge isn't a symbol of importance or expertise, and verification can't be transferred to a different account.

My verdict

If you're verified on Instagram, connecting Threads is a two-minute job; just keep the names matching. If you're not, decide on Instagram first, because that's where everything is decided. If you're tidying up which accounts sit together in your Meta Account, here's how to remove a remembered account on Instagram, and once you're verified, it's worth knowing how to DM a brand on Instagram so the badge helps you open doors.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get verified on Threads without Instagram?

No. Meta says you can't sign up for Meta Verified directly on Threads; the badge comes from your verified Instagram profile through the same Meta Account.

Why did my Threads verified badge disappear?

Check that your Threads name and username still match your verified Instagram profile, and that the Instagram profile still exists. A mismatch or a deleted Instagram profile removes the badge on Threads.

Do Meta Verified benefits work on Threads?

Only the badge. Meta says enhanced support and impersonation protection aren't available on Threads.

Can I change my Threads profile picture if I'm verified?

Not on Threads. It carries over from your verified Instagram profile, so change it on Instagram.
