YouTube's help centre doesn't name any automatic reason for watch history to turn itself off, so check the settings that control it. Confirm the account you're signed in with, review the Controls tab in My Activity, check the app's Manage all history setting, and look at shared YouTube Music, TV and auto delete settings.
You turn watch history on, carry on with your day, and later find it paused again. Or the videos you've been watching aren't showing up and your recommendations have gone flat. It's frustrating, particularly if you use YouTube to research your market or follow other creators in your niche. Here's the honest starting point. YouTube's help centre doesn't list an automatic reason for watch history to switch itself off. What it does give is the exact places where history is controlled, and checking them in order is the quickest way to narrow it down. I'll show you where to look and what each setting does.
Why YouTube watch history keeps turning off: what the help centre says
According to YouTube's help centre, watch history is a setting you control in your Google account activity. While it's off, the videos you watch don't appear in your history, and they don't feed future recommendations. The page describes how to turn it off, how to clear it and how to set auto delete. It does not describe YouTube turning it off on its own.
That tells us something useful. If history keeps pausing, the likely explanation is that a setting is being changed, or that you're looking at a different account, device or signed out session than you think. I can't see your account, so treat the checks below as a way to rule things out rather than a diagnosis.
Check you're signed in to the right account for YouTube watch history
Watch history belongs to the account, not the device. If you've got more than one Google account, the one in your profile picture is the one being checked.
- Open YouTube and select your profile picture.
- Check that the account shown is the one you expect.
- If it isn't, switch accounts and look again.
A signed out session is different again. The help centre says that when you're signed out, you control history from the History and privacy section in Settings, where you can pause or clear it. That setting belongs to that browser or device, so it won't match what your signed in account shows.
How to turn YouTube watch history back on from the app
The help centre gives this route for the mobile app, and the same Controls area is where the setting is switched. It describes pausing with the option below, so selecting it again should be the way back, although the page doesn't spell the turn on step out separately.
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile photo.
- Tap Settings, then Manage all history.
- Open the Controls tab.
- Find the option for including the YouTube videos you watch and check whether it's selected.
According to the help page, unselecting that option is what pauses history. If it's unselected on your account, that's why nothing is being saved. Menus vary by app version, so if your labels differ, update the app and look for the equivalent Controls area.
How to turn YouTube watch history back on from a computer
On a computer, the help page says history is controlled from My Activity:
- Go to your Google account's My Activity page for YouTube and sign in.
- Open the Controls tab in the left sidebar.
- Look at the YouTube history setting. The help page says Turn off is the option that stops it, so if it's off, use the same area to resume it.
The page also lists what is saved while history is on: YouTube videos watched, your YouTube searches and YouTube voice and audio activity. So you may be seeing more than one switch there, and it's worth reading each one.
Check YouTube Music, TV and other devices that share your watch history
YouTube's help pages note that pausing watch history in one place affects another. The YouTube Music help says that if you pause watch history while signed in to YouTube, it's paused on YouTube Music as well when you use the same account. So a pause made in one app can look like history turning itself off in another.

On a TV or games console, the help page says you go to Settings in the left hand menu and choose Pause watch history or Clear watch history. If anyone else in the house uses your account on a TV, it's worth checking that the pause option wasn't tapped there.
Why YouTube watch history can look turned off when it isn't
- Clearing history isn't the same as pausing it. The help page says deleting history stops YouTube basing recommendations on that content, but history can still be on afterwards.
- Auto delete removes entries after a period you choose. In My Activity you pick YouTube History, then Manage history, then Auto delete, choose a time range and confirm. Old videos disappearing can look like history stopped.
- The help page says that if you've got little recent history and have opted out of history based recommendations, features such as homepage recommendations are removed. That can look like history is off when it's just thin.
- Deleting with the DELETE button also deletes your search history for the time frame you selected, according to the help page.
If your worry is about who else can see what you watch, my explainer on whether YouTube creators can see who watched their videos covers that side.
What to do if YouTube watch history keeps pausing
- Confirm which account you're signed in with.
- Open the Controls area in My Activity and check the YouTube history setting.
- On the app, check the option for including the YouTube videos you watch.
- Check YouTube Music, TV and console settings that use the same account.
- Check your Auto delete setting, so you know whether older entries are being removed on purpose.
- Update the app or restart it if the labels look wrong, because menus vary by version.
- If it still reverts, contact YouTube through its help centre and describe exactly where you turned it back on.
The help centre also points to its privacy settings section for wider account questions, which is the right place for anything the history page doesn't cover. If the reason you've paused history is to stop certain channels appearing, you may prefer my guide to blocking a YouTube channel you no longer want to see, which does that job without switching history off.
Should you keep YouTube watch history on?
That's your call. With history on, YouTube can use what you watch to shape recommendations, which suits research and following creators. With it off, you get more privacy but less personalised suggestions. For small business owners studying competitors, I'd keep a separate account for that research, so your personal viewing doesn't muddy it. That's my own tip, not something YouTube's help pages say.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my YouTube watch history keep turning off?
YouTube's help centre doesn't name an automatic reason. Check you're signed in to the right account, the Controls area in My Activity, the app's Manage all history setting and any shared settings on YouTube Music or a TV.
How do I turn YouTube watch history back on?
On a computer, use the Controls tab in My Activity. In the app, open Manage all history and check the option for including the YouTube videos you watch. Menus vary by app version.
Does pausing watch history delete what I've already watched?
The help page says videos you watch while paused don't appear in your history. It describes deleting as a separate action done from My Activity.
Does YouTube Music share the same watch history setting?
According to YouTube Music help, if you pause watch history while signed in to YouTube, it's paused on YouTube Music too when you use the same account.
Can auto delete make it look like history is off?
It can. Auto delete removes entries after the time range you choose, so older videos disappear even though history is still on.
