ChatGPT Login (2026): How to Sign In, Sign Up and Fix a Login That Won't Work

To log in to ChatGPT, go to chatgpt.com, choose Log in, and use exactly the same method you signed up with: the same email address, or the same Google, Microsoft or Apple account. New users pick Sign up on the same screen, and most login failures come from choosing a different method or email to the one the account was created with.

The rest of this page is for when the door won't open: wrong-method errors, six-digit codes, Apple's Hide My Email trap, browser loops, phone-only accounts and two accounts side by side. It's all from OpenAI's own Help Center, as of October 2026.

Where to log in or create an account

  1. Open chatgpt.com in your browser or open the ChatGPT app. The login page itself sits at chatgpt.com/auth/login.
  2. Select Log in, or Log in or sign up, depending on which screen you're shown.
  3. If it asks for an email first, type the email address that's on your ChatGPT account.
  4. Pick the method you used when you joined: email and password, Continue with Google, Continue with Microsoft or Continue with Apple.
  5. If a verification step appears, enter the six-digit code from your email or approve the request in the ChatGPT app.
  6. New to ChatGPT? Choose Sign up instead. If sign-up says "This user already exists", you started before and didn't finish, so log in rather than signing up again.

Got a welcome email but never a verification email? OpenAI's advice is to go to chatgpt.com/auth/login and log in with the method you signed up with; finishing that login should prompt the activation. Signing up from somewhere OpenAI doesn't support gives an unsupported country error, which retrying won't fix.

Web search works without logging in, but logged-out users don't get the top model. Once you're in, my guide on the first things to do in ChatGPT picks up from there.

Which sign-in method belongs to your account

Here's the catch that trips up business owners more than any other. The email you sign in with is the one on the ChatGPT account, and that can be different from the address where your invoices or receipts arrive. If you're still signed in on the web somewhere, open Settings, then Account, and check the account email before you log out. If you changed the account email at some point, use the new one.

If you joined with Google, Microsoft or Apple, use that same button and the same provider account. Methods can combine, though only one way round: an email and password account can later sign in with Google, Microsoft or Apple as long as the email matches, and OpenAI links the two automatically. Going the other way, a Google, Microsoft or Apple signup may be able to add a password under Settings, then Security and login, where Password shows Add. If that option isn't there, the account may not be eligible.

Once multi-factor authentication is on, you must keep your current login method until you turn MFA off. And deleting an account doesn't change its sign-in method, so that's never the fix.

Apple users get their own trap. If you chose Hide My Email when you signed up with Apple, your ChatGPT account may sit on an address ending @privaterelay.appleid.com, not your real email. Use Continue with Apple with the same Apple ID. Your personal email, or another provider, opens a different account.

That last point matters because OpenAI doesn't automatically merge accounts. Sign in with a different email or provider and you can end up with a separate account, and even a separate subscription. Always sign in with the account that holds the subscription or chats you expect to see.

Codes, push approvals and the lost-inbox problem

ChatGPT may ask you to verify a login on a new device, after an attempt from an unusual location, or when you change sensitive details. You'll get one of two things: a six-digit one-time code sent to your email, or a push to the ChatGPT app asking "Yes, it's me" or "No, deny access". If the push never arrives, choose Try with email on the device you're logging in from.

Check the code came from OpenAI. The official senders are [email protected] and [email protected]. Codes expire quickly, so always use the most recent one, look in spam, and remove the login-code sender from any blocked-sender list. If you get a login request you didn't make, tap deny, then change your ChatGPT password and switch on MFA.

The hardest case is losing the email inbox itself, say an old work address: self-serve troubleshooting won't help, and SMS isn't an alternative for email-based login or verification. Contact OpenAI Support with the account email, the sign-in method you tried and any billing or subscription details, so they can verify ownership.

Fixes when the login page won't cooperate

The "Checking your browser" loop is Cloudflare, and it usually clears with these steps:

  • Pause any personal VPN or proxy and refresh the page.
  • Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools and script blockers for a moment.
  • Allow cookies, including third-party ones, and JavaScript for chatgpt.com, openai.com and auth.openai.com.
  • Try an incognito window or a clean browser profile.
  • Switch networks, for example from office WiFi to mobile data.

On a company laptop, ask IT first; they may need to allowlist the Cloudflare challenges. If Continue with Google, Microsoft or Apple has vanished, a cookie banner or blocker may be hiding it: try a hard refresh, another browser or incognito.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If the iPhone app fails but the web works, remove and reinstall the app, then sign in with your original method. A generic "Something went wrong" is worth waiting 60 seconds on, then checking whether the problem is OpenAI's, which my guide on telling if ChatGPT is down walks through. For errors you hit after you're signed in, see my ChatGPT error messages guide.

Phone-only accounts and two accounts at once

Some eligible new users, depending on country or region, can sign up with just a phone number. You can reset the password by SMS, but only from a device you've already used to log in at least once. MFA isn't available until you link an email: on the web, go to Settings, Account, Email, then Add. After that you can switch to Google, Apple or Microsoft login on the same account. If you permanently delete a consumer account, OpenAI removes the phone number after 30 days so you can sign up with it again.

Running a personal and a work account? You can stay signed in to up to 2 ChatGPT accounts at once and switch without signing out, though only one is active at a time. On the web, open the account menu and select Add account; on iOS or Android, go to Settings, Switch account, then Add account (still rolling out). A new second account starts on the Free plan, and switching never moves chats, shares memory or files, or combines billing. Check which account is active before you buy anything.

Sign in with ChatGPT on other apps

Sign in with ChatGPT is something else: an identity option on other sites, like signing in with Google. It's rolling out across partner sites, with Airtable, GitLab, HubSpot, Notion, Supabase and Vercel named first.

The other app receives only your name, email address and profile picture, not your conversations, memory, files or billing information. Anything more needs a separate permission you approve yourself.

My advice for a login that keeps failing

I'd stick to one sign-in method per account and write down which one you use, along with the account email, somewhere your team can find it. Skip creating a fresh account to get round a login problem: OpenAI won't merge it with the old one, so you end up with two sets of chats and possibly two subscriptions. If you've tried every method and still can't find the account, contact Support with the emails and methods you tried, your billing email, and the full error message including any request ID.

If your team keeps tripping over shared AI logins and who owns which account, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the ChatGPT login page?

It's at chatgpt.com. Choose Log in, or go straight to chatgpt.com/auth/login, and use the same sign-in method you used when you created the account.

Why does ChatGPT say Wrong authentication method?

You've tried a sign-in method that isn't enabled for that account. Try email and password, then Continue with Google, Microsoft and Apple in turn, ideally in an incognito window.

Can I log in to ChatGPT with my phone number?

Only if you created a phone-only account, which is offered to eligible new users in some regions. Those accounts can reset the password by SMS from a device you've logged in on before.

Can I be logged in to two ChatGPT accounts at once?

Yes. As of October 2026 you can stay signed in to up to 2 accounts and switch between them, but only one is active at a time and nothing is merged.

Will OpenAI merge my two ChatGPT accounts?

No. OpenAI doesn't automatically merge accounts, so sign in with the account that holds the subscription or chats you expect.
