Meta doesn't offer a setting that fully turns off Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Messenger, but you can control it. On WhatsApp, don't start Meta AI chats, and type /reset-ai or /reset-all-ais to delete Meta's copy. In Messenger, turn off Allow message sharing in Message permissions. In the UK and EU, use Meta's objection form to opt out of AI training.
The short answer first, because it's the one most guides skip: Meta doesn't offer a setting that switches Meta AI off completely in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook or Messenger. WhatsApp describes Meta AI as an optional service, but none of Meta's help pages offers a button that removes it from the app.
What you can do is control it: avoid starting chats with it, delete the chats you've had, make Meta delete its copy, stop other people sharing your chats with it, and object to your information being used for AI training. This guide covers each of those, using Meta's own help pages, so you can decide how far you want to go.
Can you turn off Meta AI?
Not with a single switch. Here's what Meta's help pages do say:
- On WhatsApp, you have to start a Meta AI conversation yourself. Meta and WhatsApp can't start one for you.
- Meta can only read WhatsApp messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it. Your other personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted.
- Some people see Meta AI as a coloured circle button on the WhatsApp Chats tab. Meta's pages don't offer a way to hide it.
- Meta AI on WhatsApp is rolling out gradually, in limited countries and languages, so you may not see it at all.
So the practical way to "turn off" Meta AI is simply not to use it, and to tidy up anything you've already shared. One more WhatsApp detail: typing in the search bar shows your chat results alongside an option to ask Meta AI, and Meta says what you type isn't linked to you unless you send it to Meta AI.
How to delete Meta AI chats on WhatsApp
Deleting the chat on your phone isn't enough to delete Meta's copy. WhatsApp's help page is clear that you need typed commands for that. In order:
- Download first if you want a record. Type /download-all-ai-info in the Meta AI chat. This only works before you delete the chat or your account.
- Reset one chat. Type /reset-ai in a Meta AI chat to reset it and delete Meta AI's copy of that chat.
- Reset everything. Type /reset-all-ais to reset every individual and group chat you've had with Meta AI on WhatsApp.
- Delete the chat from your phone. On Android, open the Meta AI chat, tap the menu, tap and hold the chat, then tap Delete chat and confirm. Deleted chats can't be restored.
The reset commands don't work in Incognito chats with Meta AI, because those messages aren't saved in the first place.
How to stop people sharing your Messenger chats with Meta AI
In Messenger, when someone uses Meta AI features in a chat, up to 50 recent messages are shared with Meta AI, and @Meta AI mentions in groups can share messages from the past 30 days. You can block that for a conversation:
- Open the chat.
- Click Information.
- Under Privacy and support, click Message permissions.
- Turn off Allow message sharing.
In a one-to-one chat, either person can change this. In a group, only admins can. Turning it off blocks AI features such as Meta AI summaries for everyone in that chat, and it also switches off photo auto-save.
Messenger's Meta AI help also lists settings to turn off underlined words in chats, and to turn off or retake the setup photos used for AI images of you.
How to control Meta AI on Instagram
On Instagram, some creators use AI auto-replies in their messages. When that's the case, you can turn those AI auto-replies off or back on in your chat settings. Meta's help pages don't offer a setting to remove Meta AI from Instagram search.
How to delete chats in the Meta AI app
If you've used the standalone Meta AI app, you can delete all your chats and media from Menu, then Settings, then Data and privacy, then Manage your information.
How to object to Meta using your data for AI
Meta says your interactions with AI on Messenger and Instagram are used to improve AI at Meta and, depending on your region, can personalise content and ads. On WhatsApp, Meta may use your Meta AI prompts, shared messages and feedback to improve its AI.
- In the UK: Meta trains AI on adults' public Facebook and Instagram posts, excludes under-18s, and UK adults can use an objection form at any time.
- In the EU: Meta trains AI on adults' public posts and interactions with Meta AI, and people can object through a form linked from their notifications at any time.
- Elsewhere: Messenger's help page points to an objection form if you don't want your information used to train Meta's generative AI.
Meta also uses conversations with Meta AI to personalise content and ads, with sensitive topics such as religious views excluded from ads. Meta AI chats on WhatsApp are only used for this cross-app personalisation if WhatsApp has been added to the same Accounts Center as your Facebook or Instagram account.
What should a business do about Meta AI?
If you use WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram to talk to customers, this matters more than it does for personal chats. My suggestions:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Agree a team rule that nobody shares customer conversations with Meta AI.
- Turn off Allow message sharing in Messenger chats with customers where you handle personal details.
- Keep WhatsApp out of the same Accounts Center as your personal Facebook if you don't want cross-app personalisation.
- Use /reset-all-ais if anyone on the team has tried Meta AI on a business phone.
- Write the rules into your staff handbook so new starters know them.
Copy this prompt
Write a short, friendly policy for my team on using AI features inside WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.
Cover: never sharing customer messages with built-in AI, how to delete AI chats, and who to ask if unsure.
Keep it to one page and use plain language.
Copy and paste this prompt
I manage customer messages for a [type of business] on WhatsApp and Messenger.
List the privacy settings I should check each month and explain each one in a sentence,
based only on what I tell you about the apps.
While you're tidying Facebook settings, it's worth knowing how to turn off Facebook professional mode too, and what to do if Facebook asks you to verify your identity.
Tools that help you manage Meta AI
Most of the controls live inside the apps themselves: WhatsApp's chat commands, Messenger's message permissions, Instagram's chat settings and Meta's Accounts Center. Around them, a password manager keeps your Meta logins secure, and a shared document in Google Docs or Notion is a sensible place for your team's messaging rules. If you run customer messaging through WhatsApp Business, the same chat commands apply to any Meta AI conversations on that phone.
