The short version: get a free business model canvas template from Strategyzer, Miro or Smartsheet, and a Lean Canvas from LEANSpark. Strategyzer's canvas describes a business model on one page in nine blocks. Smartsheet offers variants such as lean, social enterprise, e-commerce and tech startup, with downloads for Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs and Google Slides, so match the version to the business.
I'm a fan of anything that makes you see your whole business on one sheet. It's the fastest way I know to find the gap you've been avoiding, whether that's an unclear customer, a fuzzy offer or no real idea where the revenue comes from. You don't need to design a canvas yourself. Here's where to get a ready-made one, and how to pick the right type.
Canvas templates from four sources
In no particular order:
- Strategyzer: best for the original Business Model Canvas, with guided playbooks alongside it.
- Miro: best for filling in the canvas with a team, using stickies, links, sketches, pictures and videos.
- Smartsheet: best for downloadable variants, including lean, social enterprise, e-commerce and tech startup versions.
- LEANSpark: best for a Lean Canvas, from the creator of Lean Canvas, built from a description of your idea.

The catch: two canvases share one name
People search for 'business model canvas' and 'lean canvas' as if they were the same thing. They aren't. Strategyzer's Business Model Canvas describes a business model on one page in nine blocks, which it says cover who you serve, what you offer, how you deliver it, what it costs and what it earns. Lean Canvas is a separate one-page canvas from its own creator, and that work now lives at LEANSpark.
Then there are the variants. Smartsheet's page includes a Lean business model canvas template, a social enterprise version, an e-commerce version, a tech startup version and more, with downloads for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs and Google Slides. Grabbing the first download you see is how you end up forcing a charity or an online shop into boxes that weren't built for it.
Picking the right canvas for your business
If you're running an established business and want to describe how it works today, start with the classic nine-block canvas from Strategyzer or Miro. If you're testing a new idea and still guessing at the problem you solve, a Lean Canvas is usually the better fit, and LEANSpark says you can describe your idea in your own words, in any language, to build one.
If your business has a social mission, Smartsheet's social enterprise version is worth a look: it says the template helps you work out how the enterprise will achieve both social impact and financial viability. Online shops and tech startups each get their own variant too, which saves you rewording every box. Founders who write about their first business plan can browse startup blogs that want guest writers.
Speed matters here as well. LEANSpark says you can build a Lean Canvas in five minutes flat by describing your idea, which is handy for getting a first draft down while the idea is fresh. Strategyzer pairs its canvas with guided playbooks, which suits you better if you want structure and prompts as you work. Neither replaces the thinking, but both stop you staring at nine empty boxes wondering where to start. My tip is to do a rough version fast, sleep on it, then come back and rewrite it slowly.
Filling in the nine blocks without getting stuck
- Start with who you serve. Every other block depends on it.
- Write what you offer that customer in one plain sentence.
- Fill in how you deliver it and how you reach those customers.
- Add what it costs to run and where the revenue comes from.
- Read the blocks together. Miro warns against treating the nine blocks as isolated silos, so check that each one supports the others.
- Share it with someone who'll challenge it, then rewrite the weakest block first.
Where a canvas fits next to your business plan
A canvas isn't a business plan. It's the one-page summary you check before you write a longer document, and it's much easier to change when you get something wrong. If you're not sure which document you need, my piece on the differences between business plans and marketing plans helps you choose.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
When you're ready to turn the canvas into a full plan, this step-by-step guide to using AI to write a business plan picks up where the canvas leaves off, and these free executive summary templates help you boil it back down for investors.
If you're mapping a new business model and want help building the systems behind it, that's work I do every week. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions

Strategyzer, Miro and Smartsheet all offer business model canvas templates, and LEANSpark offers a Lean Canvas. Miro lists a free plan on its own site.

Strategyzer says the nine blocks cover who you serve, what you offer, how you deliver it, what it costs and what it earns, all on one page.
What is the difference between a business model canvas and a lean canvas?
They're separate tools. The Business Model Canvas is Strategyzer's nine-block view of a business model, while Lean Canvas comes from its own creator and now lives at LEANSpark.
Can I fill in a business model canvas in Word or Google Docs?
Yes. Smartsheet offers business model canvas templates to download for Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs and Google Slides.

Can my team fill in a canvas together online?
Yes. Miro says you can fill in each of the nine blocks using stickies, links, sketches, pictures and videos on a shared board.
