Effects on Instagram are in the camera: open the Stories camera (swipe right from your feed or tap the plus and choose Story) and swipe through the round effect icons next to the capture button. Keep swiping to the very end and tap the magnifying glass, or Browse effects, to search the full gallery; in the Reels camera, tap the effects icon on the left-hand toolbar.
Once you find an effect you like, save it. Saved effects sit in your camera tray, so next time you open the Stories or Reels camera it's right there next to the capture button instead of buried in the gallery.
Why the effect you remember may have vanished: Meta shut down its Spark platform on 14 January 2025. Spark was the tool outside creators and brands used to build effects. Meta's announcement said those third-party effects would be removed from Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, while effects made by Meta itself would stay. Stories and Reels you posted with an old effect stayed up; you just can't pick that effect again.
Find effects in the Stories camera
- Open Instagram and swipe right from your feed, or tap the plus icon and choose Story.
- Look at the row of round icons beside the white capture button. Each one is an effect.
- Swipe left through them to try each one live on your face or the scene.
- Keep going to the end of the row and tap the magnifying glass or Browse effects.
- Browse the categories or tap search and type a word, such as vintage, blur or sparkle.
- Tap an effect to preview it, then tap Try it to load it in your camera.
Find effects in the Reels camera
- Tap the plus icon and choose Reel.
- Tap the effects icon (the sparkle-shaped button) in the toolbar down the left side.
- Swipe through the suggestions at the bottom, or open the search or browse option to look through the gallery.
- Pick one and record your clip with the effect running.
The Reels and Stories cameras share the same effects, so one you save in Stories should show up in Reels too. Instagram moves buttons around between updates. If a menu name looks different on your phone, look for a search or browse option in the camera, or search the app's settings for the word effects.
Saving an effect so you can find it again
When you preview an effect in the gallery, you'll see a save option (often a bookmark or download-style icon) alongside Try it. Tap it and the effect is added to your camera tray. You can also save one you're already using: tap the effect's name at the top of the camera screen and choose save from the menu that slides up.
To remove a saved effect, press and hold it in the camera tray, or open its menu, and choose remove. That keeps your tray short, which matters once you've saved a dozen and can't find the one you use most.
Using an effect you saw on someone's Story
This is often the quickest route. When you watch a Story that used an effect, the effect's name appears near the top of the screen under the person's username.
- Tap the effect name at the top of their Story.
- Choose Try it to open your camera with that effect loaded, or save it for later.
- If you don't see a name, the person either didn't use an effect, used one that's since been removed, or edited the video in another app first.

Why an effect is missing
| What you see | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| An old favourite has gone | It was a third-party Spark effect removed in the shutdown | Search the gallery for a Meta-made effect with a similar look |
| No Browse effects at the end of the row | Old app version | Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play |
| A friend has an effect you can't find | Some effects are rolled out by region or tested with some accounts first | Tap the name on their Story; if it won't load, it isn't available to you yet |
| Effects don't move with your face | Older phone, or the camera can't see you clearly | Better light, move closer, update the app |
| The whole effects row is empty | Glitch or a full cache | Restart the app, then see the fixes for filters not working |
When effects won't load at all, the problem is usually the app rather than the effect. My guide to Instagram filters not working walks through the fixes in order.
Effects and filters aren't quite the same
People use the two words for the same thing, but Instagram treats them a little differently. Effects are the live camera tools that track your face or change the scene as you film, and they're what you browse in the gallery. Filters in the plainer sense are the colour looks you swipe across after taking a photo or when editing a post. If you're looking for a colour tint on a photo you've already taken, you won't find it in the effects gallery; swipe sideways on the edit screen instead.

There's one effect people search for constantly, and it's the background-swap one. If that's what brought you here, my guide on the green screen effect for Instagram Stories shows how to put any photo behind you.
A note for brands and creators
If your business had a branded effect, it was removed with the rest of the third-party effects when Spark closed. Meta said at the time that it wasn't offering an alternative tool for building and publishing effects on its apps. For a branded look now, plan around Meta's own effects plus your own visuals: stickers, text styles and edited video brought in from your camera roll.
Reels made with third-party face or camera effects also couldn't be boosted as ads, according to Instagram's help pages, which is one more reason to stick with Meta's own effects for anything you might want to promote later.
My verdict
Save three or four effects you like the look of and keep your tray short. Stop hunting for old Spark favourites; they're gone, and the gallery's search usually turns up a close match in under a minute.
