To contact Instagram support, use the Instagram Help Center or report a problem in the app by shaking your phone or going to Profile, Menu, Help, Report a Problem. The detail that catches people out: Instagram will never send you direct messages about your account, so any support account messaging you is fake.
When something goes wrong on Instagram, the first instinct is to find a person to talk to. I get it: if your account is locked, or the business profile that brings in your customers has vanished, you want help now. The frustrating truth is that Instagram doesn't work like a high-street shop with a help desk, and scammers know exactly how desperate people feel in that moment.
So this guide does two things. It walks you through every official way to reach Instagram support, based on Instagram's own Help Center articles, and it shows you how to spot the fake support accounts and phone numbers that prey on people who are locked out.
The official ways to contact Instagram support
Instagram's article on points of support and contact says the quickest way to find support is the Instagram Help Center, and that for most issues it's the easiest route. Here's how the official options fit together:
| Your problem | Official Instagram route |
|---|---|
| Something isn't working in the app | Report a problem, by shaking your phone or through Help in settings |
| Someone has got into your account | Instagram's hacked account page, linked from the Help Center |
| Your account has been disabled | Log in and follow the on-screen instructions to ask for a review |
| Abuse, a scam or a fake profile | Report the post, profile or message from inside the app |
| How-to questions | Search the Instagram Help Center |
Contact Instagram support with Report a problem
For bugs and broken features, Report a problem is the way to send Instagram a message from inside the app. Instagram's help says to update the app first, then report it if the problem is still there. There are two ways in.
Shake your phone
- With the Instagram app open, shake your phone to bring up the reporting menu.
- Tap Report a problem and follow the on-screen instructions.
If shaking does nothing, it may be switched off. Instagram's help says you can turn Shake phone to report a problem on or off from that same reporting menu.
Through your Instagram settings
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below More info and support, tap Help.
- Tap Report a Problem.
- Go back to where you saw the problem and shake your phone, or tap Report problem without shaking.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Give Instagram something to work with. Its help article suggests saying what kind of phone or tablet you were using, what you were doing when the problem happened, and adding a screenshot. You can also tap Include Complete Logs and Diagnostics when you send it.
Contacting Instagram support when your account is hacked
If someone has got into your account or you can't log in, Instagram's Hacked Instagram Account article sends you to its dedicated hacked-account page to secure the account. Go there through the Help Center rather than through a link someone sends you.
I've written a fuller walkthrough on recovering a hacked or lost Instagram account, including what to do when the email on the account has been changed.
Contacting Instagram support about a disabled account
A disabled account shows a message when you try to log in. Instagram's help says that if you think it was disabled by mistake, you may be able to ask for a review by logging in and following the on-screen instructions. That in-app review is the official appeal route.
If you don't see a disabled message, Instagram's help lists other causes: a normal login issue, someone else having access, or the account having been deleted. It's blunt about the last one: if an account was deleted, there's no way to restore it.
Instagram support through Meta AI and email replies
Instagram's Help Center pages now show other ways to get help, including a chat with a Meta AI support assistant, and some articles list an option to get a call from a Meta AI assistant. Use these only from inside the official Help Center pages, never from a number or link you've found elsewhere.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you've reported something and received a unique reporting number, Instagram's contact article says to save it in case you need to contact Instagram about that report. If Instagram emails you about a report, reply directly to that email so the team can carry on looking into it. That's the closest thing to an ongoing conversation with Instagram support.
Fake Instagram support accounts and phone numbers
This is where people lose accounts for good. Search for an Instagram support number and you'll find plenty of numbers that have nothing to do with Instagram. Instagram's scam guidance is clear on the warning signs:
- Instagram will never send you direct messages about your account in the Instagram app.
- Anyone claiming to be from Instagram security who asks for your username or password, or offers account verification services, is a red flag.
- Don't answer messages asking for your password, and report them.
- Accounts claiming to represent big companies that aren't verified, or that have no followers and no real activity, deserve suspicion.
If you get an email that claims to come from Instagram, don't click anything. Instagram says you can view official Instagram emails sent within the last 14 days in your settings, which lets you check whether it was real. My guide to spotting Instagram scams before you fall for one covers more of the tricks to watch for.
Getting Instagram support for a business account
Business owners face the same routes as everyone else for account problems. The Help Center also points to the Meta Business Help Center for questions about advertising on Instagram. To protect a business profile before anything goes wrong:
- Turn on two-factor authentication, which Instagram's scam guidance calls one of the most effective tools against account takeovers.
- Keep the email and phone number on the account up to date and in your control.
- Never hand your login to anyone who messages you offering to fix, verify or recover the account.

Frequently asked questions
How do I contact Instagram support?
Use the Instagram Help Center for most issues, and Report a problem in the app for anything that isn't working. Shake your phone, or go to Profile, Menu, Help, then Report a Problem.
Does Instagram have a support phone number?
Instagram's contact article points people to the Help Center rather than a phone line. Some help pages offer a call from a Meta AI assistant, so only use options shown inside the official Help Center.
Will Instagram support message me on Instagram?
No. Instagram says it will never send you direct messages about your account in the Instagram app, so treat any such message as a scam and report it.

How can I tell if an email from Instagram is real?
Check your settings, where Instagram says you can view official Instagram emails sent within the last 14 days. If the email isn't there, don't click anything in it.
