The short version: the most likely cause is that those contacts have you muted, or their phone has status updates turned off for you specifically under their own privacy settings, both of which are invisible from your side. The first thing to check is your own Status privacy setting under Settings, then Privacy, then Status, to confirm those exact contacts are not accidentally on your excluded list, since that is the one cause you can control and fix yourself.
How WhatsApp Status privacy works
WhatsApp Status shares to a list you control, found under Settings, Privacy, Status. There are three options: My Contacts, which shares with everyone in your phone's contact list who also uses WhatsApp; My Contacts Except, which shares with everyone except specific people you choose to exclude; and Only Share With, which shares with nobody except a specific list you build yourself. If your setting is My Contacts Except and someone was added to that exclude list at any point, even by accident, your status will never appear for them and there will be no error or notice on either side.
Check your own settings first
- Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Status.
- Check which of the three sharing options is currently selected.
- If it is set to My Contacts Except, tap it and review the excluded list carefully, since it is easy to add someone by mistake while trying to do the opposite.
- If it is set to Only Share With, confirm the missing contacts are included in that list, since this setting only shares with people added to it, not with everyone by default.
This single setting explains a large share of cases where a status shows to most people but not a specific few, and it is the only cause on this list you can check and fix without needing anything from the other person.
This is the part of WhatsApp Status that causes the most confusion, because every other part of the app gives some kind of signal: a message shows as delivered or read, a call shows as missed or connected. Status gives no such feedback at all. A status you post either quietly reaches someone or it quietly does not, with nothing in your own app telling you which happened for any specific contact. That is exactly why the checklist below matters, since ruling out causes methodically is the only way to work out what has happened when the app itself will not tell you.
Reasons on the other person's side that you cannot see
- They may have muted your status. WhatsApp lets any user mute another person's status updates without any notification being sent, which hides your status from their Status tab even though it was delivered normally.
- They may not have your number saved in their phone's contacts, or may have saved it under a different number than the one attached to your WhatsApp account, particularly if you have changed phone numbers or use a business number separately from a personal one.
- Their own privacy settings, unrelated to yours, could be filtering what they see, for instance if they have a very cluttered status list and simply have not scrolled to yours.
- They may be using a version of WhatsApp that has not synced recently due to a poor connection or the app being closed for an extended period, delaying when your status appears for them.
None of these show up as an error, which is what makes this particular problem frustrating to diagnose from your side alone.
Fix it on iPhone
- Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Status, and review your sharing setting and any excluded contacts as described above.
- Confirm the contact's number is saved correctly in your phone's Contacts app, including the correct country code, since a mismatched number can cause WhatsApp to treat them as a different contact than the one you intend to share with.
- Ask the contact directly, outside WhatsApp if needed, whether they have muted your status or whether your number appears correctly in their own contacts.
- Update WhatsApp through the App Store if an update is available, since older versions occasionally have syncing issues with Status delivery.
Fix it on Android
- The steps for checking your Status privacy setting are identical to iPhone: Settings, Privacy, Status.
- Check Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions, and confirm Contacts access is fully allowed, since a blocked contacts permission can affect how WhatsApp matches phone numbers to the people in your list.
- Clear WhatsApp's cache under Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, Clear Cache, which can resolve a stuck sync without removing any chats or media.
- Confirm the phone has a stable connection and try posting the status again after confirming a strong wifi or mobile data signal.
What a shared phone or a work phone changes
If either you or the contact use a phone shared between family members, or a device that is regularly reset, wiped, or handed between employees on a work phone, that adds another layer that has nothing to do with your Status privacy setting at all. A wiped phone re-added to WhatsApp starts again with no saved contacts until they are re-entered, meaning a contact who could see your status perfectly well last month may simply no longer have your number saved after a phone reset. It is worth asking directly whether either device has changed hands or been reset recently before assuming the fault sits in a setting somewhere.
Check it on WhatsApp desktop and web
Status updates posted from the mobile app also appear through WhatsApp's linked desktop app and WhatsApp Web, since Status is tied to your account rather than a single device. There is no separate Status privacy setting on desktop, it mirrors whatever is set on the phone that manages the account, so there is nothing extra to check there beyond confirming the desktop app is linked correctly and up to date under the Linked Devices menu on the phone.
What does not fix it
- Posting the same status again does not help if the underlying cause is a mute or an excluded contact, since the same rules apply to the new post.
- Deleting and re-adding the contact in your phone often makes things worse temporarily, since WhatsApp may treat them briefly as a new, unverified contact.
- Changing your profile photo or About text has no bearing on Status visibility rules.
- Turning your phone's airplane mode on and off does not affect who is on your Status exclude list or who has muted you.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp does not change privacy settings tied to your account, since those are stored with your account rather than the local app installation.
When to contact support
Contact WhatsApp support through Settings, Help, Contact Us, if your Status privacy setting is confirmed correct, the contact is not excluded or muted on either side as far as you can tell, and the contact still cannot see your status after more than a day. This points to a syncing fault worth reporting directly. For most cases, though, this is a two person conversation rather than a technical fault: asking the specific contact to check whether they have muted your status, and checking your own excluded list, resolves the large majority of these situations without needing to contact support at all.

Frequently asked questions
Can someone see my status if I have blocked them?
No. Blocking a contact removes them from seeing your status entirely, in addition to blocking calls and messages. If you want someone to see general updates but not have full access to message you, use the Status privacy exclude list rather than a full block.
Does muting a status notification stop the other person seeing it in their Status tab?
Muting only affects notifications and where the status appears within the muted person's own Status tab, moving it lower down or out of immediate view. It does not stop delivery, and the muted person can still open your status directly from your contact profile if they choose to.
Why can a contact see my messages but not my status updates?
Status privacy is controlled entirely separately from messaging and calling permissions. Someone can be a fully active contact you message every day while still being on your Status exclude list, whether that happened on purpose or by accident, so it is worth checking that list specifically rather than assuming general contact status covers Status sharing too.
Does changing my phone number affect who sees my status?
Yes. When you change your WhatsApp number, contacts need your new number saved correctly for your account and status to display to them as before. Until they update their saved contact, your status may not appear for them even though your privacy settings have not changed at all.
Can a status be seen by someone even if I am not saved in their phone contacts?
Generally no, if your Status privacy is set to My Contacts or My Contacts Except, since both rely on mutual contact matching to some extent. If you use Only Share With and manually add someone by their number, WhatsApp can share with them even without a full two way contact save in some cases, though this varies and is not guaranteed to work identically on every version of the app.
