How Much Does WhatsApp Business API Cost in India? Real 2026 Numbers

The short version: for most small and mid-sized Indian businesses, WhatsApp Business API costs somewhere between ₹1,500 and ₹15,000 a month once you add Meta’s per-message charges to a BSP platform fee, though a chatty ecommerce brand sending thousands of marketing broadcasts can push past ₹50,000 easily. The number you get quoted online is almost never the number you pay, because nobody mentions template rejections, number migration delays, or the fact that marketing messages are billed per message now, not per neat 24-hour conversation.

Why there is no single answer to this question

Every time someone asks me “what does the WhatsApp API cost in India,” I ask them back: how many people are you messaging, and what are you saying to them. Those two answers change the bill by a factor of ten. The API itself has no flat “India price” the way a SaaS subscription does. You are paying three separate things that get bundled together in every quote you receive:

  • Meta’s own per-message fee, which varies by message category and is cheaper in India than in the US or UK
  • A Business Solution Provider (BSP) platform fee, since you cannot go direct to Meta without one
  • Setup and template approval time, which is free but can cost you two or three weeks of momentum

I have gone deep into this exact bill in a breakdown of what WhatsApp Business really costs per message sent, and India is one of the few markets where the per-message maths favours you.

Meta’s actual per-message rates in India

Meta charges by message category, and India’s rates sit near the bottom of the global table. As of 2026, rough per-message costs for India look like this:

  • Marketing messages: around ₹0.78 to ₹0.90 per message
  • Utility messages (order updates, shipping confirmations, appointment reminders): around ₹0.11 to ₹0.15 per message
  • Authentication messages (OTPs, login codes): around ₹0.10 to ₹0.13 per message
  • Service messages (a customer replies to you within the 24-hour window): free, still, in most cases

Meta moved marketing pricing from a per-conversation model to a per-message model through 2025, which sounds like a technical detail but changes your bill quite a lot if you send more than one template inside the same window. Under the old system, ten marketing messages to the same person within 24 hours cost you one conversation fee. Now each one is billed separately. Nobody selling you the API tends to lead with that.

What a real BSP costs on top of Meta’s fee

You cannot access the API without going through a BSP such as Gupshup, Kaleyra, Interakt, AiSensy, Wati, or Twilio. Here is roughly what Indian businesses pay in 2026, based on published pricing and what I have seen clients invoiced:

  • AiSensy: plans from around ₹999 a month for a basic tier up to ₹11,999 a month for higher-volume plans, plus Meta’s message costs on top
  • Interakt: starting around ₹1,199 a month, scaling to roughly ₹3,999 a month for growth-stage teams, again with Meta charges billed separately
  • Wati: international pricing from about $49 (roughly ₹4,100) a month for the starter plan
  • Gupshup: pay-as-you-go model with no fixed monthly fee for small volumes, but per-message markup that adds up fast at scale
  • Twilio: a per-message markup on top of Meta’s fee, which I have covered in detail when weighing up whether the WhatsApp Business API through Twilio is worth it for small businesses

None of these prices include GST, which adds 18 percent on top of whatever the BSP invoices you.

A real example from a client in Pune

A homeware brand I worked with in Pune signed up for AiSensy’s mid-tier plan at roughly ₹2,999 a month, expecting that to be the whole cost. Their first invoice, once Meta’s message fees landed, came to just under ₹9,000. Why? They had a customer list of 4,200 people and were sending two marketing broadcasts a week. At roughly ₹0.85 per marketing message under the newer per-message pricing, two broadcasts to the full list came to about ₹7,140 in Meta fees alone, on top of the platform fee. Their founder had budgeted for ₹3,000 and got a bill nearly three times that. This is the single most common surprise I see, and it is entirely avoidable with basic list segmentation, which almost nobody sets up on day one because the onboarding call never mentions it.

The uncomfortable bit most guides skip over

Here is the part that gets left out of nearly every cost article on this topic: WhatsApp’s pricing structure quietly rewards businesses that message fewer, better-targeted people, and punishes the ones who treat it like email, blasting the whole list because the per-message cost looks tiny in isolation. ₹0.85 feels like nothing. Multiplied across a growing list and a weekly sending habit, it turns into one of your largest monthly software costs within six months, usually faster than founders expect. I have seen businesses spend more on WhatsApp marketing messages than on their entire email platform, without noticing until the invoice arrives. The fix is not complicated, it is just unglamorous: segment your list, cut broadcast frequency, and lean on free service-conversation replies wherever the customer messages you first. I go through the actual mechanics of this in how to price your WhatsApp Business account for growth without the bill outpacing your revenue.

Step by step: working out your own likely monthly bill

  1. Count your active contact list, and split it into people who message you first (service, mostly free) versus people you broadcast to (marketing, billed per message)
  2. Decide how many marketing templates you will send per contact per month, being honest, not aspirational
  3. Multiply contacts by templates by roughly ₹0.85 for a marketing-message estimate
  4. Add utility and authentication volumes at roughly ₹0.11 to ₹0.15 each, if you are sending order updates or OTPs
  5. Add your chosen BSP’s flat monthly platform fee
  6. Add 18 percent GST to the total

Run this before you sign up, not after your first invoice arrives. It takes ten minutes and it is the single most useful thing I do on every WhatsApp API onboarding call now, because clients remember the surprise bill years later, not the setup call.

Where automation earns its cost back

The reason businesses put up with these costs at all is that the API lets you automate replies, bookings, and order status updates that would otherwise need a human on the other end. I have written before about how AI customer service bots save small businesses time, and the WhatsApp API is usually the channel where that saving shows up fastest, since customers already have the app open and expect a quick reply. A well-built bot handling order status and FAQs can cut your marketing spend need substantially, because service replies are free and reduce how often you need to broadcast at all.

If you are choosing between BSPs or trying to work out whether the platform fee, the message cost, or a full custom build makes more sense for your volume, that decision is exactly where a specialist saves you money rather than costing you it. This is the kind of setup question I walk clients through directly through working with an AI consultant for small business, because the wrong BSP choice at month one usually gets locked in through contact migration headaches by month six.

A quick note on the platform’s official pricing

Meta’s own published pricing structure changes periodically, and India-specific rates get updated without much fanfare. I keep a running breakdown of the current tiers, categories, and what has shifted most recently in the current pricing structure for the WhatsApp Business platform, which is worth checking before you commit to any BSP contract, since some lock you into annual terms based on rates that may already be outdated by the time you sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is WhatsApp Business API free in India?

No, though it is cheaper here than in most markets. Meta charges per message for marketing, utility, and authentication categories, and you need a paid BSP platform on top since you cannot access the API directly. Service replies within a 24-hour window are usually free.

What is the cheapest way to use WhatsApp Business API in India?

A pay-as-you-go BSP like Gupshup with no fixed monthly fee works out cheapest for very low volumes, since you only pay Meta’s per-message rate. Once you send regular broadcasts, a fixed-fee plan from AiSensy or Interakt usually ends up cheaper overall.

Why did my WhatsApp API bill suddenly increase?

Almost always it is because your contact list or broadcast frequency grew without you re-checking the maths, or because Meta shifted from conversation-based to per-message billing on marketing templates, which charges each message separately rather than bundling several into one 24-hour conversation fee.

Do I need a developer to set up WhatsApp Business API in India?

For basic broadcast and reply setups, no, most BSPs offer a no-code dashboard. You only need a developer if you want custom automations, CRM integrations, or a bot that handles complex order logic beyond simple template replies.
