What Is a UPI Reference Number and Where Do You Find It?

A UPI reference number is the unique transaction ID given to every UPI payment. You'll find it on the transaction details screen in your UPI app, and on your bank statement next to the payment. It's the number your bank, the merchant and NPCI use to trace a payment.

Different apps label it differently: UPI transaction ID, UPI reference ID, UPI Ref No or UTR. They all point to the same thing, the ID of that one payment.

Where to find it in your UPI app

In Google Pay, Google's help pages give these steps:

  1. Open Google Pay.
  2. Scroll down the home screen and tap See transaction history.
  3. Tap the payment you want.
  4. The transaction details page shows the status and the UPI transaction ID.

In PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank's app, open your transaction history, tap the payment, and look for UPI Ref No, UPI transaction ID or UTR on the details screen. If the label looks different, it's usually the longest number on the page.

Where to find it on your bank statement

This is the tip most people don't know. Google's help page says that on a bank statement, the UPI transaction ID is usually the first 9 digits after the slash in the transaction description. Match those digits, and the amount, against the ID in your app and you've found the payment.

WhereWhat to look for
UPI appTransaction details screen: UPI transaction ID or UPI Ref No
Bank statementThe digits after the slash in the description
SMS from your bankMany banks include the reference in the debit or credit alert
Merchant receiptShops and websites often print the UPI reference

When you'll need it

  • A payment shows as debited but the receiver says it hasn't arrived.
  • A payment failed and you're waiting for the refund.
  • You paid the wrong person. Google's help page says to contact your bank with the UPI reference ID if the receiver doesn't respond.
  • A merchant says your order isn't paid. Send them the reference so they can find it.
  • Raising a complaint with NPCI. The complaint form asks for transaction details, and the reference is the key one.

What the payment status means

When you look up a payment by its reference, Google's help pages explain what to expect:

StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
Payment processingThe banks haven't finished it yetWait up to 3 business days, and don't pay again
FailedThe payment didn't go throughThe refund reaches your bank within 3 business days, with a reversal entry carrying the same ID
Success, but not receivedThe banks are still settling itIt can take up to 48 hours; then check with your bank

The "don't pay again" advice is the one that saves people the most trouble. Paying twice while the first payment is still processing can leave you chasing two refunds instead of one.

Sharing your UPI reference number safely

The reference number is safe to share with the person you paid, the merchant, your bank or NPCI. It only identifies the payment. It can't be used to take funds from your account. What you should never share is your UPI PIN or an OTP, whoever asks.

One scam to watch for: someone sends a fake screenshot with a reference number to "prove" they've paid you. Always check your own bank statement or app for that reference before handing over goods or cash.

Using the reference to chase a payment

When you contact anyone about a UPI payment, lead with the reference number. A short message works best: the reference, the date, the amount, and what's wrong. For example, "UPI reference (number), paid on (date), shows debited in my account but the shop says it hasn't arrived. Please check." Agents can find a payment in seconds with the reference, and without it they're searching by date and amount, which takes longer and goes wrong more often.

If you're the one receiving, ask the payer for their UPI reference when a payment hasn't shown up. Then search your own bank statement for those digits. If it's there, the payment has arrived and the problem is just a missing alert. If it isn't, the payer should check their status first.

Filtering your history to find an old payment

Google Pay lets you filter the transaction history by status (completed, failed or in progress), by payment method such as bank account or UPI Lite, by date range and by amount. Filtering by date and amount usually brings the payment you want to the top in seconds, and from there you can open it to copy the reference.

If you can't find the payment

Google notes that its transaction history only shows payments made through Google Pay, not every UPI or bank payment. If you paid using another app, look in that app's history. If it's in neither, check your bank statement, which shows every UPI payment from your account whichever app you used.

Reference number vs UPI ID

People mix these two up. Your UPI ID, something like name@bank, is your payment address and stays the same for every payment. The UPI reference number is different for every single payment, a fresh ID each time. If a bank or merchant asks for your reference, they want the payment's ID, not your UPI ID. Giving them the wrong one is the most common reason a complaint stalls at the first step.

My take

Screenshot the details screen of any payment that matters: rent, a big purchase, a first payment to a new person. The reference number on that screenshot is your proof, and it's the first thing anyone will ask for if something goes wrong. If you receive payouts from apps or clients, my guides on safe Paytm cash-out apps and the earning app safety checklist are worth a look.
