To raise a UPI complaint with NPCI, go to the UPI Complaint page on NPCI's website, choose the UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism form, pick Transaction or Non Transaction as the complaint type, select your bank and fill in the transaction details. You get a Complaint Reference Number to track it.
Before you do, know who fixes it. NPCI's own page says it passes your complaint to your bank, and the bank is responsible for resolving it. NPCI is the messenger and the record keeper, not the one that refunds you.
The rule that saves you a week: fraud goes to your bank
NPCI's complaint page carries a note that most people scroll past. Complaints about fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transactions have to be raised with your own bank, not on the NPCI form. If someone tricked you into paying, or a payment left your account that you never made, call your bank first and block UPI on the account if needed. Then report it to the police cyber cell.
The NPCI form is for problems with real payments you made yourself: a debit with no credit, a pending payment, a merchant who didn't receive it, a mandate issue.
What to try before NPCI
Google Pay's help page lays out the order, and it works the same for every UPI app:
- Raise the issue in the UPI app you paid with. Most apps have a help or report option on the transaction screen.
- If it's not sorted, contact your bank and quote the UPI reference ID from the transaction details.
- If it's still unresolved, raise a complaint with NPCI through the Dispute Redressal Mechanism.
Google adds a deadline for the NPCI step on wrong transfers: within 3 days of the transaction. It also lists NPCI's toll-free number, 1800-120-1740, as an alternative to the online form. Don't sit on a problem hoping it clears itself.
Raise the complaint on NPCI's website, step by step
- Open NPCI's website and go to Customer, then UPI Complaint/Support.
- Under UPI Dispute Redressal Mechanism, choose the complaint type: Transaction or Non Transaction.
- Select your bank from the list.
- Fill in the transaction details the form asks for, such as the UPI reference ID, the date and the details of the payment.
- Check your mobile number and email are correct. NPCI's page asks you to check these before you submit.
- Submit and save the Complaint Reference Number (CRN).
NPCI's site is updated from time to time. If the menu looks different, look for the words UPI Complaint on the Customer menu.
Which complaint type to pick
| Your problem | Complaint type | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Account debited, receiver didn't get it | Transaction | App, then bank, then NPCI |
| Payment stuck on pending | Transaction | App, then bank, then NPCI |
| Paid a merchant, order not marked paid | Transaction | Merchant, then bank, then NPCI |
| AutoPay or mandate problem | Transaction or Non Transaction, depending on the issue | App, then NPCI's UPI Help |
| Can't register, PIN or app issue | Non Transaction | App, then bank |
| Fraud or a payment you didn't make | Not NPCI | Your bank straight away |
Have these details ready
- The UPI reference ID (sometimes called the UTR or transaction ID) from the app's transaction details.
- Date and time of the payment.
- Your UPI ID and the receiver's UPI ID or name.
- Your bank's name, and the app you paid with.
- Screenshots of the transaction screen and any SMS from your bank.
Screenshots matter more than people think. If the app later shows a different status, your screenshot is the record of what you saw at the time.
Tracking your complaint
NPCI's page says that once a complaint is registered or closed on its website, you can check the final status with your bank using the transaction details or your CRN. Keep the CRN somewhere safe, along with the date you filed it.
NPCI also runs UPI Help, an assistant that answers questions about UPI transactions and lets you view and manage mandates. For simple status checks, it can be quicker than a form.
If the bank still doesn't fix it
If your bank doesn't resolve the complaint, or you're unhappy with its answer, the next step is the Reserve Bank of India's complaint system for banking and digital payments. You'll need your bank complaint details and the CRN, so keep every reference number from the earlier steps.
How long should you wait before escalating?
Give each step a fair chance, but don't let it drift. Most apps answer an in-app report within a day or two. If the app only repeats that the payment is pending, move to the bank and get a complaint number from them as well. Banks run their own grievance desks and will usually ask for the UPI reference ID before anything else, so have it ready.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
For a payment that left your account but never arrived, the most common outcome is an automatic reversal by the bank. That's why the bank is the right second stop. If the reversal doesn't show and the bank can't explain why, that's exactly the case NPCI's form exists for.
Write down every date as you go: when you paid, when you reported it in the app, when you called the bank and when you filed with NPCI. A simple note on your phone is enough. If you ever need to escalate further, a clear timeline makes your complaint much harder to brush off.
Watch out for fake helplines
Search results and social media are full of fake UPI customer care numbers. A real bank or NPCI agent will never ask for your UPI PIN, your OTP, or ask you to install a screen-sharing app. NPCI's FAQ says your bank's customer support will never ask for your PIN. If a "helpline" asks for any of these, hang up and use the contact details inside your bank's own app.
I've seen the same playbook used against people cashing out from earning apps. My earning app safety checklist and the guide to safe Paytm cash-out apps show the warning signs.
My honest take
Most UPI problems are fixed at step one or two, in the app or by the bank, and quickly. NPCI's form is there for when they aren't, and it's worth using because it creates a record your bank has to answer. File early, keep the CRN, and never let urgency push you into sharing a PIN.
