The Claude API is how software connects to Claude, Anthropic's AI, so businesses can build it into their own websites, tools and workflows. You create a key in the Claude Console and send requests through the Messages API or use Claude Managed Agents. The catch people miss: your API key works like a password.
Most people meet Claude through its chat app. But there's a second way in, the Claude API, and it's how businesses build Claude into their own websites, tools and workflows. If a developer or a software supplier has mentioned it, or you're wondering how an app you use has Claude inside it, this explainer is for you.
I'll cover what the Claude API is, the two main ways Anthropic offers to build with it, the current models, how getting started works, and the safety basics around API keys. Everything comes from Anthropic's own developer documentation.
What the Claude API is
An API, short for application programming interface, is a way for one piece of software to talk to another. The Claude API lets your software send a request to Claude and get its answer back, without anyone typing into the Claude chat app.
Anthropic's documentation describes two ways to build with Claude:
| Way to build with the Claude API | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Messages API | Direct access to prompt Claude models | Custom set-ups where you want fine-grained control |
| Claude Managed Agents | A ready-made, configurable agent set-up that Anthropic runs for you | Long-running tasks and work that happens in the background |
What you can build with the Claude API
Anthropic lists capabilities including summarising text, answering questions, extracting data, translating, explaining and generating code, and analysing images. In business terms, that opens up jobs like these:
- A website assistant that answers customer questions from your help articles.
- A tool that reads incoming enquiries and drafts a first reply for a person to check.
- Automatic summaries of long documents or meeting notes.
- Pulling details such as names, dates and order numbers out of emails.
- Describing product photos or checking images against your guidelines.
The current Claude models in the API
Anthropic's docs list the latest generation of Claude models, each suited to a different kind of work:
- Claude Fable 5.1: for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work.
- Claude Opus 5.5: for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work, and Anthropic's suggested starting point if you're unsure.
- Claude Sonnet 5.5: the best combination of speed and intelligence for everyday tasks.
- Claude Haiku 5.5: for high-volume, quick tasks such as sorting, extracting and routing.
Anthropic says all current models support text and image input, text output, many languages, vision and tool use. Models change over time, so check Anthropic's models overview when you start a project.
How to get started with the Claude API
- Create a Claude Console account on Anthropic's developer platform.
- Create an API key, and set an expiry date when you do.
- Store the key as an environment variable rather than writing it into your code.
- Install an official software kit, such as the Python or TypeScript one.
- Send a first test message to Claude using the Messages API, following Anthropic's quickstart.
- Use the Console's playground to try prompts in your browser before building them in.
If you'd rather have an AI agent help you write the code, my guide to using Claude Code when you have never written code is a gentle way in, and my tips on speeding up coding work with AI apply to any project.
Keeping your Claude API key safe
Your API key is like a password for your account. Anthropic advises setting an expiration when you create a key and keeping it out of source control, client-side code and prompts. In plain terms:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Never paste your key into a chat, an email or a shared document.
- Never put it in code that runs in a visitor's web browser.
- Don't commit it to a public code repository.
- Give each project its own key, so you can switch one off without breaking everything.
- Delete keys you no longer use.
Writing good prompts for the Claude API
- Give Claude a clear role and the exact job in the first lines of your instructions.
- Show one or two examples of the output you want, in your own house style.
- Tell it what to do when it isn't sure, such as flagging the message for a person.
- Test with real, messy examples from your business, not tidy made-up ones.
Claude API versus the Claude app
The Claude app is for people chatting with Claude directly. The Claude API is for software talking to Claude. Many businesses use both: the app for staff, and the API inside a customer-facing tool. If you're still choosing an assistant for your team, my comparison of Claude and ChatGPT looks at the app side.
Is the Claude API right for your business?
If you have a repetitive job involving text, documents or images, and someone who can build a simple integration, the Claude API is worth exploring. Start small, with one clear task and a person checking the results, before letting it touch customers. If you'd like help scoping a first project and building it safely, that's the kind of work I do as an AI consultant.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Claude API used for?
The Claude API lets software send requests to Claude and get answers back, so businesses can build Claude into websites, tools and automated workflows.
How do I get a Claude API key?
Create a Claude Console account on Anthropic's developer platform, then create an API key there. Anthropic suggests setting an expiration on each key.
Which Claude model should I use in the API?
Anthropic suggests starting with Claude Opus 5.5 for most work, using Claude Sonnet 5.5 or Haiku 5.5 for faster tasks and Claude Fable 5.1 for the most demanding reasoning.
Is the Claude API the same as the Claude app?
No. The Claude app is for people chatting with Claude directly, while the API is for software connecting to Claude.
What are Claude Managed Agents?
Anthropic describes them as a pre-built, configurable agent set-up that runs in Anthropic's managed infrastructure, suited to long-running and background tasks.
