How to Use Claude Code When You've Never Written Code

You can use Claude Code without a terminal or any coding. Open the Code tab in the Claude desktop app, or run it in your browser, on a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan. Pick a copy of a small folder, switch on Manual mode so you approve every change, and describe the job in plain words. Never point it at live client files or your live website without a backup.

The short version: how to use Claude Code, step by step.

The first time someone told me to try Claude Code, I nearly dismissed it. It sounded like something for developers, with a black terminal window and lines of commands. Then I took a closer look at how it works now, and I changed my mind. You can use it without ever opening a terminal, and you can ask for what you want in ordinary sentences.

This guide is for business owners who've never written a line of code. I'll explain what Claude Code is, the two routes that skip the terminal, how to stay in control while it works, three useful jobs to start with, and the one thing you should never do.

What is Claude Code?

Anthropic describes Claude Code as an agentic coding tool. In plain terms, it's an assistant that can open the files in a folder, read them, change them, run tasks on your computer and work with your other tools, all from instructions you write in everyday language. It's available in the terminal, in code editors, in the Claude desktop app and in your web browser.

The word coding is slightly misleading. Anthropic says you can use it to automate tedious tasks, build features and fix bugs from plain-language descriptions. For a business owner, the tedious tasks part is the interesting bit: renaming hundreds of files, cleaning up a messy export, building a small tool for your website. That's what we'll aim at.

How do I use Claude Code if I've never written code?

You have two routes that don't involve a terminal at all, and both need a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan.

  • The desktop app. The Claude desktop app has three tabs: Chat, Cowork and Code. The Code tab works on a folder on your computer, so you pick a folder, describe what you want, and Claude gets to work. No terminal needed.
  • Your browser. Claude Code also runs on the web, with no local setup. That suits longer jobs, because you can set a task going and check back later.

If you're unsure which to pick, start with the desktop app. Working on a folder you can see on your own computer makes it much easier to understand what Claude is doing.

Is Claude Code for beginners?

Yes, if you treat it like a new assistant rather than a magic button. Anthropic's own advice for the desktop app is to start with a small project you know well. I'd go further: pick something where you'd instantly recognise a good result. If you know what a tidy folder or a correct report should look like, you'll spot a mistake straight away.

Two habits make all the difference for a beginner, and I'd follow both from your first session.

Use Manual mode so you approve every change

The desktop app has a Manual permission mode. In this mode, Claude proposes each change and waits for your approval. You see a diff view, which shows what would be added or removed, and you choose Accept or Reject. Nothing happens to your files until you say so. When you're new, this is the mode I'd stay in.

Work on a copy, not the original

Before you point Claude at anything, copy the folder and let it work on the copy. If something goes wrong, you simply delete the copy and start again. It takes ten seconds and removes nearly all the risk.

What should I put in a CLAUDE.md file?

CLAUDE.md is a plain text file that Claude reads at the start of each session. Think of it as a briefing note you leave for a new member of staff. Anthropic even suggests creating one as a good first request, and you can ask Claude to write the first draft with you.

Mine would cover who the work is for, what the folder contains, the rules to follow, and what must never be touched. Here's a prompt that gets you started without any technical language.

Copy this prompt

Please create a CLAUDE.md file for this folder, written in plain words.
The folder contains: [describe what's in it, for example client invoices and notes].
My business is: [one sentence about what you do].
The rules are: never delete or overwrite anything without asking me first, always explain what you're about to do in one sentence, and keep file names in this style: [your naming style].
Ask me up to [number] questions before you write it if anything is unclear.

What can I do with Claude Code when I'm not a developer?

Here are three jobs I'd give a non-coder. Each one is small, easy to check and worth doing.

Tidy and rename a folder of files

Everyone has a folder of files called scan-final-final or image-copy. Copy the folder, open the copy in the Code tab and ask Claude to sort the files into sensible subfolders and rename them in a consistent style. In Manual mode, you'll see each change before it happens.

Copy and paste this prompt

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

This folder is a copy of my [type of files, for example supplier invoices].
Suggest a tidy folder structure and a naming style such as [client name, then date, then description].
Show me your plan first and wait for my yes.
Then rename and sort the files one batch at a time, and give me a list of anything you weren't sure about.

Build a simple one-page calculator or quote tool

This is the one that surprises people. You can describe a small tool in words, such as a quote calculator for your services, and Claude will build it as a single web page. The golden rule is to build it in a test folder, look at it in your browser, and only then think about putting it on your site. Never build straight into your live website.

Copy this prompt

In this empty test folder, build a one-page quote calculator for my business, [business name], which offers [list your services].
The visitor should choose [the options you want, for example service type and size] and see an estimated total.
Use my brand colours: [colours] and keep the wording friendly and plain.
Don't connect it to anything online. I just want to open it on my computer and see how it looks.

Turn a messy spreadsheet export into a clean report

Exports from booking systems and shops are often a mess of odd column names and duplicate rows. Put a copy of the export in a test folder and ask Claude to clean it and summarise it.

Copy this prompt

The file in this folder is a copy of an export from [the system it came from].
Clean it by removing duplicate rows, fixing obvious spelling differences in [the column you care about] and standardising the date format.
Then write a one-page summary of what it shows for [the question you want answered].
Save the cleaned version as a new file and leave my original untouched.

What should I never do with Claude Code?

This part matters most. Never point Claude Code at live client files or at your live website without a backup. Claude can change and run things on your machine, and a mistake on the original can be hard to undo. Your safety checklist is short:

  • Work on copies of anything you'd mind losing.
  • Stay in Manual mode until you've seen how it behaves on a few jobs.
  • Keep a backup of your website before any change that touches it, and ask a trusted developer to review anything going live.
  • Keep sensitive details out of the folder: passwords, bank details and anything covered by a confidentiality agreement.
  • Read each proposed change before you accept it. If you don't understand it, reject it and ask Claude to explain.

Tools that work with Claude Code

Claude Code is built to work with your development tools, which matters if you have a web developer in the background. For everyday tasks, the desktop app's Chat and Cowork tabs sit alongside the Code tab, so you can plan a job in one and do it in another. If you're still deciding whether Claude is the right assistant for you, my guide to the other AI assistants worth comparing is a good place to start, and if you'd like to go further and have an assistant working on its own, how to build an AI agent as a beginner is the natural next step.

If you'd like someone to help you choose the right jobs to automate and set it up safely, this is how I work with business owners.
