Time Sensitive on a Snapchat notification is an iPhone label, not a Snapchat one. It means Snapchat sent that alert as a time-sensitive notification, which Apple lets through straight away, even when a Focus such as Do Not Disturb is on.
Nothing's wrong with your account and nobody's set a deadline on your Snap. It's your iPhone telling you which alerts it lets jump the queue.
Below I explain where the label comes from, why it gets past your Focus, and how to turn it off for Snapchat alone. The settings come from Apple's iPhone User Guide and Snapchat's Support pages, read in October 2026.
Where the Time Sensitive label comes from
Apple's iPhone User Guide lists Time Sensitive Notifications as a setting for each app, with the note that it only appears if the app supports it. Snapchat is one of the apps that does, which is why you'll see the label on some Snapchat alerts and not others.
You won't find Time Sensitive inside the Snapchat app itself. The Snapchat help pages on notifications cover muting chats and calls and Android settings, not this label, because it belongs to iOS.
Why Time Sensitive Snapchat alerts get through Focus
This is the part that surprises people. Apple's guide says that when you set up a Focus, you can turn on Time Sensitive Notifications, which allows all apps to send time-sensitive notifications immediately.
So if your Focus has that option switched on, a Snapchat alert marked Time Sensitive can light up your screen while the rest of your apps stay quiet. That's why Snapchat sometimes seems to ignore Do Not Disturb. It isn't ignoring it. Your Focus is letting it in.
How to stop Snapchat sending Time Sensitive alerts
If you want Snapchat to stay quiet during a Focus but still get its normal alerts, switch off the setting for Snapchat only. Apple's steps are:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to Snapchat under Notification Style and tap it.
- Turn off Time Sensitive Notifications.
Your Snapchat notifications keep coming. They just lose their Time Sensitive pass through a Focus.
How to stop every app breaking through your Focus
If Snapchat isn't the only app sneaking past Do Not Disturb, change the Focus instead. Apple's guide explains that each Focus can allow or silence notifications, and Time Sensitive Notifications is one of the options inside it.
- Open Settings and tap Focus.
- Tap the Focus you use, such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep.
- Open the notification settings for that Focus.
- Turn off Time Sensitive Notifications.
Now no app can use the Time Sensitive label to get through that Focus. Apps you've chosen to allow still will.
How to quieten one friend on Snapchat instead
Sometimes the problem isn't Snapchat, it's one busy group or one friend. Snapchat lets you mute chats or calls from a single person:
- Open the Chat screen.
- Press and hold on your friend's name.
- Tap Chat and Notification Settings.
- Tap Notification Settings.
- Turn on Mute Chats, Mute Calls, or both.
That's a gentler fix than switching notifications off altogether. If you'd rather keep the alerts but make them sound different, my guide to changing the Snapchat notification sound shows you how.

Time Sensitive on Android phones
The Time Sensitive label is an iPhone feature, so Android users won't see it. Snapchat's help page for Android says you control alerts from Settings inside Snapchat: tap the gear on your Profile screen, tap Notifications, and untick the ones you don't want. It also notes that, depending on your phone, you may need to allow notifications in your device's settings before you can manage them in the app.
What Time Sensitive doesn't mean
| What people think | What's going on |
|---|---|
| The Snap will disappear faster | No. The label is about how the alert is delivered, not about the Snap |
| My friend marked it urgent | No. It's set by the app and your iPhone settings, not by the sender |
| Snapchat changed my settings | No. Time Sensitive is controlled from your iPhone's Settings app |
| It's a Snapchat+ feature | No. It's part of iOS notifications |
If your Snapchat alerts also turn up on your wrist, my guide to Snapchat notifications on Apple Watch explains how the watch follows your iPhone's settings.
Other iPhone settings that change Snapchat alerts
While you're in Settings, Notifications, Snapchat, Apple's guide lists a few other switches that change how Snapchat reaches you. They're worth a look if Time Sensitive was only part of the problem.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Alerts | Choose whether alerts show on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center or as banners |
| Sounds | Pick a sound, if the app supports it |
| Badges | Show or hide the red count on the Snapchat icon |
| Lock Screen Appearance | Set how previews show and how notifications are grouped |
| Notification Delivery | Choose Immediate Delivery or Scheduled Summary, if you use Scheduled Summary |
Scheduled Summary is the one people forget. If you'd like Snapchat alerts in a batch a few times a day rather than one by one, that's the setting to try, and it leaves Time Sensitive out of the picture.
My verdict
Time Sensitive is nothing to worry about. It's your iPhone giving Snapchat a pass through your Focus. If that pass annoys you, take it away in Settings, Notifications, Snapchat, and leave everything else alone. If only one chat is the problem, mute that chat in Snapchat and leave your phone's settings alone.
Frequently asked questions
What does Time Sensitive mean on Snapchat?
It's an iPhone label. It means Snapchat sent that alert as a time-sensitive notification, which iOS can deliver straight away, even when a Focus such as Do Not Disturb is on.
Why do Snapchat notifications come through Do Not Disturb?
Apple's guide says a Focus can allow time-sensitive notifications from all apps immediately. If that option is on, Snapchat alerts marked Time Sensitive can get through.
How do I turn off Time Sensitive for Snapchat?
Open Settings on your iPhone, tap Notifications, tap Snapchat and turn off Time Sensitive Notifications. Your normal Snapchat alerts keep working.
Does Time Sensitive mean the Snap will disappear sooner?
No. The label is about how your iPhone delivers the notification. It doesn't change how long a Snap or Chat stays on Snapchat.
Can I stop Time Sensitive alerts in one Focus only?
Yes. Open Settings, tap Focus, choose that Focus and turn off Time Sensitive Notifications in its notification settings. Other Focus modes stay as they are.
