What Does Media Upload Mean on Snapchat? (The Label Explained)

Media Upload on Snapchat means the Snap contains a photo or video that was taken earlier, either on Snapchat or in another app, rather than captured live in the Snapchat camera. You'll see the label in the top left corner of the Snap, and Snapchat says it can't be removed.

So it's a heads-up, not a warning. It tells you the picture wasn't taken in that moment, nothing more.

Below I go through when the label appears, what it doesn't mean, and why trying to hide it won't work. The facts come from Snapchat's Support pages, read in October 2026.

Where you'll see the Media Upload label

Snapchat's help article says that when you're viewing a Snap, you may see Media Upload in the upper left corner. That's the only place it shows. It sits on the Snap itself, so whoever views it sees it too.

When Snapchat adds Media Upload to a Snap

Snapchat explains that the label means the Snap contains media, like an image or video, that was previously taken, on Snapchat or on another platform. In practice that covers a few everyday situations:

  • Sending a photo or video from your phone's Camera Roll.
  • Sharing a Snap you saved to Memories earlier.
  • Using a Lens that pulls in an image from your Camera Roll. Snapchat gives this one as its own example.

Sending from the Camera Roll is easy enough. Snapchat's steps are to swipe up from the Camera screen to open Memories, find the photo or video under the Home or Camera Roll tabs, and press and hold on it to share. My guide to posting to your Snapchat Story from your camera roll covers the Story side in more detail.

What Media Upload doesn't mean

People read all sorts into this label. Here's what it isn't:

What people worry aboutWhat the label tells you
The Snap is fakeNo. It only says the media was taken earlier, not that it's edited
It's a screenshot of someone elseNot necessarily. It could be any photo or video already on the phone
The sender's been reportedNo. It's a content label, not an account warning
Snapchat is hiding the SnapNo. The Snap shows as normal with a small label

If you've been sent something that worries you, the label won't settle it either way. Judge the Snap on who sent it and what it shows.

Can you remove the Media Upload label?

No. Snapchat's help page answers this directly: it's not possible to remove the Media Upload label from Snaps where it appears. There's no setting to switch it off and no edit that takes it away.

If you want a Snap without the label, take it live with the Snapchat camera. That's the only route that doesn't involve media captured beforehand.

Why the label exists

Snapchat doesn't spell out its reasons on the help page, but the effect is easy to see. Snapchat started life as an in-the-moment app, and friends tend to assume a Snap shows what's happening right now. The label stops an old photo passing as a live one. For a holiday photo from last summer, that's harmless. For a Snap that claims to show where someone is tonight, it's useful.

Media Upload for businesses and creators

If you post for a brand, the label isn't a problem in itself. Plenty of good Snaps use footage you shot earlier on a better camera. Just be aware the label tells viewers it wasn't filmed in that moment, so it suits planned content more than behind-the-scenes, happening-now posts.

Media Upload compared with Snapchat's chat icons

Media Upload is a label on the Snap itself. It's easy to mix up with the small icons on the Chat screen, which tell you about delivery rather than where the picture came from. Snapchat's Chat screen guide groups those icons like this:

SignWhere you see itWhat it tells you
Media UploadTop left of a Snap you're viewingThe photo or video was taken earlier
Received iconChat screenYou have an unopened Snap or an unread Chat
Opened iconChat screenYour friend opened your Snap or Chat
Screenshot iconChat screenSomeone took a screenshot of your Snap or Chat
Replay iconChat screenYour Snap was replayed

So a Snap can carry the Media Upload label and still show the usual Received and Opened icons in the chat. One is about the picture, the others are about the message.

How to send a Snap without Media Upload

  1. Open Snapchat on the Camera screen.
  2. Take the photo or video there and then, with the Snapchat camera.
  3. Add any text, stickers or drawing you want.
  4. Send it, or post it to your Story.

If what you want to share is an older photo or video, send it anyway and say so in a caption. The label will tell your friend it was taken earlier, and the caption tells them why it matters.

My verdict

Media Upload is Snapchat being honest about timing. It means the photo or video was taken before the Snap was sent, and that's all. You can't remove it, so don't waste time trying. If you want a Snap to look live, shoot it live.
