To allow camera access on Snapchat on an iPhone, go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and switch Snapchat on. On Android, go to Settings, then Apps, then Snapchat, then Permissions, then Camera, and choose Allow only while using the app.
That's the fix for a black screen or a "Snapchat would like to access the camera" message that you tapped away by mistake. The catch is that the switch lives in your phone's settings, not inside Snapchat.
Below are the steps for every device, the extra Android switch that quietly blocks the camera for all apps, and what to try if the camera still won't open. The steps come from Snapchat Support, Apple's iPhone User Guide and Android Help, read in October 2026.
Why Snapchat can't fix this from inside the app
Snapchat does have a Permissions screen. On iPhone you reach it from your Profile icon, the gear button, then App & Privacy, My Privacy & Data and Permissions. On Android the path ends in Privacy Choices, then Permissions.
That screen tells you what each permission is for. Snapchat says the camera is used to take Snaps, video chat and add friends by Snapcode, and the microphone records audio for Snaps and video chat. It's a list for checking, though. The real on and off switch is in your phone's own settings, and that's where Apple and Google send you.
How to allow camera access on Snapchat on iPhone
Apple's iPhone User Guide says apps have to ask before they use the camera or microphone, and you can change your answer at any time.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Camera.
- Find Snapchat in the list and switch it on.
- Go back, tap Microphone, and switch Snapchat on there too if you want sound on your videos and calls.
- Close Snapchat fully and open it again.
Apple adds a useful check: whenever an app is using the camera, a green indicator appears. If Snapchat is open on the Camera screen and you don't see the green dot, the app isn't getting the camera.
How to allow camera access on Snapchat on Android
Android Help gives the steps for a single app. Menu names can differ a little between phone makers, but the route is the same.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps. If Snapchat isn't listed, tap See all apps.
- Tap Snapchat.
- Tap Permissions.
- Tap Camera and choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time.
- Do the same for Microphone so your Snaps record sound.
Android Help explains the choices. Allow only while using the app means Snapchat can use the camera only while it's open. Ask every time means it asks each time you open it. Don't allow blocks it even while you're using the app.
The Android switch that blocks every app's camera
This one catches people out. Android has a phone-wide camera switch, separate from the per-app setting. Android Help puts it in Settings, then Security & privacy, then Privacy, then Privacy controls, where you can turn off Camera access or Microphone access.
If that's off, Snapchat can have full permission and still show a blank camera. Check it before you reinstall anything.
How to allow camera access on Snapchat for Web
Snapchat for Web uses your browser's permission, not your computer's settings app. Snapchat Support gives these steps.

| Browser | What to do |
|---|---|
| Chrome | Click the lock icon in the address bar, toggle on Camera and Microphone, then refresh the page. If you don't see the toggles, click Site settings. |
| Edge | Click the lock icon in the address bar, toggle on Camera and Microphone, then refresh. If the toggles are missing, click Permissions for this site. |
| Safari | Click Safari at the top, then Settings for web.snapchat.com, and choose Allow for Camera and Microphone. |
If the camera still won't work
When the permission is on and the camera's still dark or frozen, Snapchat Support suggests these checks, in this order:
- Switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi, because a poor connection can affect how the Camera works.
- Close the Snapchat app completely and open it again.
- Check the App Store or Google Play for a Snapchat update.
- Turn your phone off and on again.
If every app's camera is black, not only Snapchat's, the problem is the phone rather than the app, and my guide to an iPhone camera showing a black screen covers that side. If it's sound that's missing rather than the picture, my guide to Snapchat not playing sound is the better place to start.
On iPhone, use Apple's indicators as a quick test. Apple says a green indicator shows when an app is using the camera, and an orange one shows when an app is using the microphone without the camera. If you see orange while you're filming in Snapchat, the microphone is working but the camera isn't.
If you only want to share photos you already have
Camera access and photo access are different permissions. Snapchat lists Photos separately, for saving Snaps to your Camera Roll and sending photos and videos in Chat. If you only want to post old pictures, you can leave the camera off and allow photos instead, then follow my guide to posting to your Snapchat Story from your camera roll.
My verdict
A Snapchat camera that won't open is usually a permission you said no to once and forgot about. Go straight to your phone's settings, switch Snapchat on for Camera and Microphone, and on Android check the phone-wide privacy switch too. Only reinstall the app if all of that is on and it still won't work. You'll save yourself a login and a lot of fiddling.
Frequently asked questions
How do I allow camera access on Snapchat on iPhone?
Open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, tap Camera and switch Snapchat on. Do the same under Microphone if you want sound, then close and reopen Snapchat.
How do I allow camera access on Snapchat on Android?
Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Snapchat, tap Permissions, then tap Camera and choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time.
Why is my Snapchat camera black even with permission on?
On Android, check the phone-wide Camera access switch in Privacy controls. Then try Snapchat's own checks: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart the app, update it and restart your phone.
Can I change camera access inside the Snapchat app?
Snapchat's Permissions screen under My Privacy & Data lists what each permission is for, but the on and off switch is in your phone's Settings app or, for Snapchat for Web, your browser.
