Online on WhatsApp means the person has the app open and is connected to the internet. WhatsApp's help pages say it doesn't mean they've read your message. The typing dots mean they're writing in your chat, and Last seen shows the last time they used WhatsApp.
You open a chat and see the word Online under a name. Or you watch the typing dots appear and then vanish. It's natural to read a lot into those little signals, and I see plenty of small-business owners do exactly that with customers. So what do they tell you, and what don't they? Here's the plain version, based on WhatsApp's own help pages.
What Online means on WhatsApp
According to WhatsApp's help pages, if someone is online, they have WhatsApp open on their device and are connected to the internet. The same page adds that this doesn't mean the person has read your message. It says nothing about whether they're looking at your chat or plan to answer. It simply says the app is open and connected.
That's why the label can be misleading. Someone can be Online because they're in another conversation, scrolling their Status updates or listening to a voice note from someone else entirely.
What the typing dots mean on WhatsApp
According to the help pages, when you're typing a message, the recipient sees a typing indicator, which appears as three dots in the chat thread. It shows in individual and group chats, but not in channels. It's a live signal, so it can disappear if the person stops, deletes what they wrote or changes their mind. Many people start a reply and think better of it, so a vanished typing indicator isn't a sign of anything.
One more detail from the same help pages: people who are online in a chat with you can see when you're typing, even if you've hidden your last seen.
Last seen versus Online on WhatsApp
| Signal | What it shows | What it doesn't show |
|---|---|---|
| Online | The person has WhatsApp open and is connected to the internet | That they've read your message |
| Last seen | The last time they used WhatsApp | Whether they've seen your chat |
| Typing dots | They're writing a message in this chat right now | That a reply will definitely arrive |
When someone isn't online, you may see their last seen. If you can't see Online or Last seen at all, WhatsApp lists these reasons: you've chosen not to share your own last seen (which hides others' from you), you haven't chatted with them or saved them as a contact, you might be blocked, they've hidden it in their privacy settings, they haven't messaged you or saved you, or there's a temporary connection issue. I've covered the setting itself in my guide to hiding your last seen on WhatsApp, and it's the first thing to check before assuming something is wrong.
Why someone looks Online on WhatsApp but never replies
This is the question behind most searches for this topic, so let me be direct. Online doesn't mean available. Common, harmless reasons include:
- They saw your message and need time to think about the answer.
- They're busy in another chat, a call or a group.
- They have the app open in the background while doing something else.
- They've read it and meant to reply later.
- They're one of the many people who simply reply in batches.
The check marks beside your message tell you a bit more than the Online label. If you want to understand them, my guide to telling whether someone has read your WhatsApp message explains one grey tick, two grey ticks and blue ticks.
How to read WhatsApp presence signals without overthinking them
Presence labels are a bit like seeing a light on in someone's window. It tells you the building's occupied, not that they want visitors. I'd give them little weight on their own. People work shifts, parent, travel, sleep and ignore their phones on purpose, and none of that is about you.
If you're ever tempted to keep checking, set a rule: check once, send your message, and get on with your day. You'll feel better, and so will the person you're writing to. For anything that can't wait, pick up the phone.

Can you fake or hide Online on WhatsApp?
The help pages I read describe one way to change what people see: the Last seen and online setting under Privacy, where you choose Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except or Nobody. They don't describe any way to pretend to be online or to look offline while you're actively using the app, so I wouldn't promise that. Be wary of anything claiming to fake your status, especially unofficial apps, because they put your account and your data at risk.
WhatsApp also says that if you pick Everyone in the online setting, you're counted towards the group online count. That's a privacy choice rather than a trick.
Does a hidden Online label hide everything on WhatsApp?
- Typing still shows for people who are online in a chat with you.
- Blue ticks still show unless you've turned read receipts off, and WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent for group chats.
- Your phone number stays visible; WhatsApp says there's no way to hide it.
What the Online label means for your own business chats
If you use WhatsApp for customers, remember that the signals cut both ways. A customer who sees you Online and gets no answer may assume you're ignoring them. Two simple fixes: say in your greeting when you reply, and choose a privacy setting that suits how you work.
And if a contact's behaviour starts to feel like a pattern you can't explain, don't rely on one label. The signs of being blocked on WhatsApp are worth a look, but treat them as hints, not proof.
