To hide last seen on WhatsApp, open Settings, tap Privacy, then Last seen and online, and choose Nobody, or My contacts except to hide it from certain people. The catch: WhatsApp says if you don't share your last seen, you can't see anyone else's either.
Last seen is the line under a contact's name that tells you when they were last active on WhatsApp. It's handy sometimes and awkward at others, especially if you'd rather not have clients, colleagues or relatives watching your habits. The good news is that you decide who sees it, and the setting takes under a minute. Below are the steps from WhatsApp's help pages, what each option means, and the catch most people miss.
Hide your last seen on WhatsApp for Android
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots at the top right.
- Tap Settings, then Privacy.
- Tap Last seen and online.
- Choose Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except, or Nobody.
If you pick My contacts except, WhatsApp asks you to choose the people who shouldn't see it. Menus vary by app version, so if the wording differs on your phone, start from Privacy.
Hide your last seen on WhatsApp for iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture.
- Tap Privacy.
- Tap Last seen and online.
- Choose Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except, or Nobody.
What each WhatsApp last seen option does
| Option | Who can see your last seen and online, per WhatsApp's help pages |
|---|---|
| Everyone | Only people you've called or messaged before, or who you've saved as a contact |
| My contacts | Only contacts from your address book |
| My contacts except | Contacts from your address book, minus the people you exclude |
| Nobody | No one |
That first row surprises people. WhatsApp says that even if you choose Everyone, unknown numbers who've never messaged or been saved by you can't see your last seen. By default, WhatsApp's help pages say your contacts can see when you were last seen, and any user can see when you're online. If you want to know exactly what the Online label shows, I've explained it in my guide to what Online means on WhatsApp. WhatsApp's help pages also mention that if you select Everyone in the online setting, you're counted towards the group online count. Your privacy menu may show a separate Online choice, so look for it under the same Privacy screen.
The catch when you hide last seen on WhatsApp
According to WhatsApp's help pages, if you don't share your last seen or online, you can't see other people's last seen or online either. It works both ways. That's the reciprocity effect, and it surprises people. If you hide yours, theirs disappears from your screen too.
WhatsApp also lists other reasons you might not see someone's last seen: you haven't chatted with them or saved them, they've hidden theirs, or you might be blocked. So a missing last seen on its own proves nothing. If you want to cut contact with someone, blocking someone on WhatsApp is the route, and it's a separate job from this setting.
What hiding last seen on WhatsApp doesn't hide
- Typing. WhatsApp says people who are online in a chat with you can see when you're typing.
- Read receipts. Blue ticks have their own switch in Privacy, so they can still show unless you've turned them off. WhatsApp adds that read receipts are always sent for group chats.
- Your phone number. WhatsApp says there's no way to hide it when using the app.
- Messages you send. Anyone in the chat can see what you post, whatever your last seen says.
If your goal is to stop people seeing that you've read their messages, you need the read receipts setting as well. My guide to turning off read receipts on WhatsApp takes you through it.
Hiding last seen if you use WhatsApp for business
If you run a small business on WhatsApp, look for the same Privacy menu in your app, though menus vary by version. Think carefully before you hide it. If customers see you were active an hour ago and you haven't answered, they may be irritated, but a hidden last seen stops them from guessing at all. It also means you can't see theirs. A decent middle path for many small businesses is to hide it from everyone and set clear reply times in your greeting instead.
If you can't find the last seen setting on WhatsApp
- Update WhatsApp, because older versions can have different menu names.
- Start from Privacy and look for Last seen and online.
- Check that you're in the main WhatsApp app on your phone, not a linked device, because settings can differ there.
Who still sees your WhatsApp last seen if you pick My contacts
People worry that My contacts is the same as private. It isn't quite. It means the people saved in your phone's address book can see when you were last active. That's usually a mix of family, friends, clients and suppliers, plus anyone you saved once and forgot about. If that list is long, the better setting is My contacts except, where you remove the handful of people you'd rather not share it with.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Think about it from your own side too. If you'd be happy for a close friend to see it but not an old supplier, an exception list gets you there without going all the way to Nobody. And if you later change your mind, nothing is locked in. You can come back to the same screen and choose a different option.
Should you hide your WhatsApp last seen at all?
There's no right answer, only trade-offs. Hiding it gives you breathing room: nobody can read meaning into the time you were last on. The trade-off is that you lose that view of others too. For most people the privacy is worth it. Either way, it's a setting, not a commitment.
