To half swipe on Snapchat, go to the Chat screen, press on your friend's name and slowly drag it to the right until you can read the chat, then slide it back to the left before you lift your finger. If you let go while the chat is showing, you've opened it the normal way.
That's the trick in one move. The part most guides leave out is that Snapchat now has a name for this, peeking, and Snapchat+ subscribers can see when you do it.
Below you'll find the steps, what the other person can and can't see, and when a half swipe isn't worth the bother. The facts come from Snapchat's own Support pages, read in October 2026.
How to half swipe on Snapchat, step by step
Half swiping isn't a button or a setting. It's a slow drag on the Chat screen, and it takes a couple of goes to get the feel of it.
- Open Snapchat and swipe right from the Camera to reach the Chat screen.
- Find the friend whose chat you want to read.
- Press on their name and keep your finger on the screen.
- Drag slowly to the right. The chat slides into view behind your finger.
- Read what you need while your finger is still down.
- Drag back to the left until the Chat screen is fully back, then lift your finger.
Go slowly. A quick flick does the same as a tap and opens the chat in full. If your thumb slips off the glass halfway, assume the chat's been opened.
What Snapchat calls a half swipe
Snapchat's help centre doesn't list half swipe as a feature, and you won't find it in Settings. What it does describe is peeking. Its Peek a Peek article talks about a friend "peeking into your shared one-on-one or Group Chat", which is exactly what a half swipe is.
That matters, because it tells you Snapchat can see the peek happen. It isn't invisible to the app. It's only hidden from people who don't pay for Snapchat+.
The catch: Snapchat+ users can see you peeking
Here's the bit that catches people out. Snapchat says that if your friend subscribes to Snapchat+, Peek a Peek lets them see when you're peeking into a chat they're part of.
- They'll see an eyes emoji next to your conversation in their Chat feed.
- If they're inside the chat at the same moment, your Bitmoji appears at the side of their screen.
- It works in Group Chats as well as one-on-one chats.
There's one limit in your favour. Snapchat says they'll only see you peeking if they're looking at their Chat feed or sitting in the chat at the same time you peek. If they're on the Camera or watching Stories, the moment passes.
So a half swipe hides you from most people, most of the time. It doesn't hide you from a Snapchat+ friend who happens to be watching.
What your friend sees when you half swipe and when you open
Snapchat's Chat screen icons tell your friend whether you've opened what they sent. The help page splits them into Sent, Received, Opened and Viewed icons.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
| What you do | What your friend's Chat screen shows |
|---|---|
| Half swipe and slide back | Their message still looks unopened, unless they have Snapchat+ and catch you peeking |
| Let go while the chat is showing | An Opened icon, the same as tapping the chat |
| Open a Snap they sent | An Opened icon for that Snap |
| Take a screenshot of their Snap or Chat | A Screenshot icon |
If you want to read the icons on your own side as well, my guide to the eyes emoji on Snapchat Stories covers the other place an eyes symbol turns up, which is a different feature altogether.
Why your half swipe might not work
- You flicked instead of dragged. Slow and steady keeps the chat in the peek position.
- You're tapping the chat rather than pressing and dragging. A tap opens it straight away.
- There's nothing new to peek at. If the chat's already open on your side, there's nothing to hide.
- Your app is out of date. Gestures can change between versions, so update Snapchat and try again.
Snaps are a separate thing from Chat messages. A half swipe lets you read text in the chat, but a photo or video Snap you haven't opened still sits there as an unopened Snap until you tap it.
A safer way to leave a chat for later
If what you want is time before you reply, there are cleaner ways than peeking. Snapchat's default is to delete most Chats once they've been viewed or have expired, so opening a chat in full and leaving it can mean it vanishes before you answer. You can save a message by pressing and holding on it, and my guide to saving and unsaving chats on Snapchat walks through that.
If you'd rather nobody sees you're online at all, my guide to turning off active status on Snapchat covers the settings that control that side of things.
My verdict on half swiping
Half swiping is fine for a quick look at a long message when you're not ready to reply. It's not a privacy tool. Anyone with Snapchat+ who's watching their chats can see the eyes emoji, and Snapchat itself knows you peeked. If keeping a conversation calm matters more than keeping it secret, open it, say you'll come back to it, and save the message so it doesn't disappear.
Frequently asked questions
Can people see when you half swipe on Snapchat?
Most people can't. Snapchat+ subscribers can, through Peek a Peek: they see an eyes emoji next to your chat, or your Bitmoji at the side of the chat, if they're looking at the Chat feed or the chat at the same moment you peek.
Does half swiping on Snapchat mark a message as opened?
Not if you slide the chat back before you lift your finger. If you let go while the chat is showing, Snapchat treats it as a normal open and your friend sees the Opened icon.
Is half swipe an official Snapchat feature?
No. Snapchat's help centre doesn't list half swipe as a feature, but it does describe peeking into a chat in its Peek a Peek article for Snapchat+ subscribers.
Can you half swipe a Snap on Snapchat?
A half swipe lets you read Chat messages. A photo or video Snap you haven't opened stays unopened until you tap it, so peeking doesn't show you the Snap itself.
