How to Reply to a Story on Instagram (Text, Photo, GIF)

To reply to a story on Instagram, open the story, tap the Send message bar at the bottom, type your reply and tap Send. It lands in their DMs, not on the story, so only they see it. You can also send a photo, video, GIF or sticker in that same chat.

Replying to a story is the easiest way to start a real conversation on Instagram, because you're reacting to something the person chose to share. It's private, it's quick, and it gets noticed far more than a like. Here's every way to do it and what happens on their side.

Send a text reply in four taps

  1. Open the story from the row at the top of your feed or from their profile picture.
  2. Tap the Send message bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Type your reply. Emoji count as a message too.
  4. Tap Send.

Instagram's own Stories page sums it up: you can like someone's story, or catch up with them directly by replying with a DM. That's the part people don't expect. A story reply doesn't sit under the story like a comment. It goes straight into a private chat between you and them, and other viewers never see it.

Reply with a photo or video

A photo reply works well for anything visual: a dish you cooked from their recipe, the view from the same beach, your attempt at their tutorial. After you've sent a message from the story, the conversation sits in your chats, and Instagram DMs let you send photos and videos there.

  1. Tap Messages and open the chat with that person.
  2. Tap the camera in the bottom left.
  3. Take a photo, hold to record a video, or tap the image icon to pick one from your phone.
  4. Add text, a drawing or a GIF if you like.
  5. Choose View once, View twice or Unlimited views, then tap Send.

One catch from Instagram's Help Centre: you can only send disappearing photos or videos to people who follow you or who've already approved messages from you. If you're replying to a story from someone who doesn't follow you, send a text first.

GIFs, stickers and reactions

Instagram DMs support stickers, GIFs, custom reactions and message effects, so you don't have to write anything clever. A well-picked GIF is often the most natural reply to a funny story. If you'd like to get more out of GIFs on your own content too, posting a GIF on Instagram covers the options.

What you doWhere it goesWhat they see
Tap the heart (like)Stays on the storyThat you liked it, no message
Type a replyTheir DMsYour message with the story attached
Send an emojiTheir DMsA message, just like a typed reply
Photo, video, GIF or stickerYour chat with themThe media in the conversation

The difference matters. A like is a quiet nod. Anything typed, even one emoji, starts or continues a conversation in their inbox, so it'll get a notification and feel more personal.

Where your reply ends up afterwards

Your reply sits in your chat with that person, with the story attached. After 24 hours the story disappears from Direct unless they've saved it as a highlight, and Instagram says the photo or video then stops showing in the conversation, though your text stays. So if you reply late, they may see your words without the context. Add a few words of context if it's a quick 'Ha!' to something they posted yesterday.

To review or tidy up replies you've sent, go to Your activity, then Sticker responses under Interactions. Instagram notes you won't see the original story there unless it was saved to highlights.

Why there's no reply box

If the Send message bar is missing, the person has limited who can reply. Instagram says that by default anyone who can see a story can reply with a message, but when someone prevents you from replying, you simply won't see the option. There's nothing to fix on your side.

What you noticeThe likely reason
No Send message barThey've turned off or limited story replies
Green ring and a Close Friends labelYou're on their Close Friends list, and replies work as normal
You replied but they never seem to read itThey may have restricted you, so your messages land in their Message Requests
Your photo reply won't sendThey don't follow you and haven't approved messages from you

Restriction is the one people worry about. Instagram's Help Centre says that when someone restricts you, your chat moves to their Message Requests and you can't see when they're online or have read your messages. For the full picture, what restricting someone on Instagram does explains both sides.

Replying when someone mentions you

If someone you follow mentions you in their story, Instagram sends you a direct message with a preview. You can reply right there in the chat, which is often the nicest moment to say thanks. If you don't follow them, the mention shows up as a message request instead.

What to say on someone's Instagram story

The best replies are specific. 'Love this' is fine; 'Where's that cafe? I need that cake' starts a conversation. A few ideas you can adapt:

  • Ask a real question: 'What was the book you were reading here?'
  • Share a matching moment: 'I was there last week, wasn't the view something?'
  • Answer what they asked: if their story poses a question, reply with your answer.
  • Celebrate a win: 'Congratulations, you've worked so hard for this.'
  • Make them laugh: a GIF that matches the mood says plenty.
  • For business contacts: 'That launch looks brilliant, how's the first week going?'

If you post stories yourself and want more replies like these coming your way, story ideas that get replies has prompts that invite people to message you.

My advice for replies that start conversations

Reply to the detail, not the whole story. People can tell the difference between a reply someone typed while scrolling and one that shows they looked. One specific line or a question they'll enjoy answering does more than three fire emoji.

And read the room: if there's no reply bar, respect it. Don't switch to a new DM to say the same thing they've chosen not to receive on their story.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reply to an Instagram story with a photo?

Open your chat with them, tap the camera in the bottom left, take or pick a photo and tap Send. It only works if they follow you or have approved your messages.

Can other people see my reply to an Instagram story?

No. A story reply goes to the person's DMs, so only you and they can see it.

Why can't I reply to someone's Instagram story?

They've limited or turned off story replies, so the Send message bar doesn't appear for you.

Does liking a story send a message?

No. Liking a story doesn't send a DM. Typing anything, even an emoji, does.

What should I say on someone's Instagram story?

Something specific: a question about what's in the story, a matching memory, or congratulations on news they've shared.
