You can't remove every AI image from Pinterest, but you can cut most of them from your feed. Go to Settings, open Refine your recommendations, choose the AI content tab and turn off Show AI content. Then use the see fewer AI Pins option on any AI Pin that still slips through, and look for the AI modified label when you open a Pin.
Pinterest's own wording matters here. Its help pages talk about seeing fewer AI Pins and reducing AI content, never about removing it completely. That's because the filter works on categories of your recommendations, and it relies on Pinterest spotting the AI in the first place.
Step 1: Turn off Show AI content
This is the main switch, and it lives in your recommendation settings.
On a computer
- Log in to Pinterest.
- Click the more options icon at the bottom left of your screen.
- Select Refine your recommendations.
- Click the AI content tab.
- Turn off the Show AI content toggle.
In the app
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the menu icon at the top right of your profile.
- Tap Refine your recommendations.
- Tap the AI content tab and turn off Show AI content.
Pinterest says that when you turn this toggle off, all AI topics are turned off. On a business account the route is slightly different: tap your profile photo, then the ellipsis icon at the top right, then Settings and Refine your recommendations.
Step 2: Filter AI by topic instead
If you don't mind AI in some areas but hate it in others, skip the master switch. Under the same AI content tab there's a Manage AI content by topic section where you can turn individual topics on or off. That suits someone who's happy to see AI art ideas but wants real photos for, say, home decor or recipes. It's worth a look even if you use the master switch, because it shows you exactly which topics the AI filter covers.
Step 3: Use see fewer AI Pins on the Pin itself
When an AI Pin still appears in your feed, open the ellipsis icon at the bottom right of the Pin. If it's in one of the categories Pinterest covers, you'll see a "see fewer" AI Pins option. Pinterest says this sends a signal to its systems to recommend less of that type of content.
This works alongside the settings above. The toggle sets the rule; the Pin-level option trains your feed on the examples it missed.
How Pinterest knows a Pin is AI
This is the part a lot of people don't realise. Pinterest's AI filtering and labels depend on detection, and Pinterest describes three routes:
| How it's spotted | What Pinterest does |
|---|---|
| Image metadata | Pinterest reads a Pin's metadata following the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard. If it shows AI generation or editing, the Pin can be labelled. |
| Pinterest's own classifiers | Pinterest says it built classifiers that detect Gen AI content automatically, even when there are no obvious markers. |
| The creator says so | If the person who uploaded the Pin indicates it was made or modified with AI, it can carry the label too. |
So an AI image with its metadata stripped, which the classifiers miss and the creator doesn't declare, can still reach your feed. That's why no setting can promise zero AI.
Spotting the AI modified label
When Pinterest detects AI on a regular Pin, you'll see an AI modified label at the bottom left of the image after you click into the Pin. Ads work differently: the label doesn't appear on the close-up. Instead, tap the ellipsis icon next to the ad to see its details, where the disclosure says it was modified with AI, contains an AI-generated person, or may have been modified with AI if Pinterest's systems flagged it.
What the AI filter won't change
- Ads. Pinterest says changing your recommendations won't affect the ads you see in your home feed. Ad choices sit in separate settings.
- Search results you go looking for. The settings tune your recommendations; they aren't a block list.
- Undetected AI. If Pinterest can't tell a Pin is AI, the filter can't catch it.
If your own Pin is wrongly labelled as AI
Creators and businesses sometimes find an AI label on a real photo. Pinterest's help page says to contact its support team to appeal the label. It also runs a GenAI transparency tool where you upload an image and it reports whether AI generation or modification was detected, but Pinterest is clear it only detects content made with Pinterest's own GenAI tools and may not catch images from other AI tools.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If you save Pins from other sites too, my page on the Pinterest Chrome extension is worth a look.
A cleaner feed overall
If AI is only part of why your feed feels off, the Activity tab in the same settings turns off recommendations based on Pins you've engaged with, which is a quick way to clear out old interests. My guide on resetting your Pinterest feed walks through every lever side by side. And if you'd rather search with your own photos than scroll a feed, Pinterest Lens finds ideas that look like a picture you take.
My verdict
Turn off Show AI content first; it does the heavy lifting in under a minute. Then use see fewer AI Pins whenever one gets through, and check for the AI modified label on anything you plan to copy or buy. You won't get to zero, because Pinterest can only filter what it detects, but you'll get a feed that feels a lot more human.
Feed settings aren't the only thing you can adjust, and my page on making Pinterest private covers the privacy side.
Frequently asked questions
Can you turn off AI on Pinterest?
You can turn off the Show AI content toggle in Refine your recommendations, which turns off all AI topics in your recommendations. It reduces AI Pins in your feed but doesn't remove every AI image.
Where is the AI filter on Pinterest?
It's in Settings under Refine your recommendations, on the AI content tab. You can switch off Show AI content or manage AI content by topic.
Why do I still see AI Pins after turning the filter off?
Pinterest can only filter Pins it detects as AI, through metadata, its own classifiers or the creator's disclosure. Undetected AI images and ads can still appear.
What does AI modified mean on Pinterest?
It's a label Pinterest adds when it detects that a Pin was generated or modified with AI, or when the creator says so. You'll see it at the bottom left after you click into the Pin.
