Ignore on Discord hides a person's new messages, DM and server notifications, profile and activity from you, without blocking them or letting them know. They can still message you and see your profile; you just won't be alerted.
Ignore is the quiet option: you get space from someone without the fallout of a block. I checked Discord's own help article on it as of Nov 2026, and everything below comes from that page.
Ignore and block side by side
Discord's guide to ignoring users compares ignoring with blocking in detail. It names muting as a third option but doesn't compare it, so I've left mute out of the table rather than guess.
| Ignore | Block | |
|---|---|---|
| Can they message you? | Yes, but you won't get notifications | No |
| Can you message them? | Yes | No |
| Their messages in shared spaces | Hidden, without notifications | Hidden, without notifications |
| Their profile | Hidden unless you choose to unhide it | Hidden unless you choose to unhide it |
| What they see of your profile | Your full profile | A limited version |
| Friendship | Stays; non-friends' requests go to your inbox without alerts | Removed; they can't send new requests and see an error if they try |
| Will they know? | No, they can't visually detect it | Not stated, but they see an error if they try to re-add you |
My verdict: ignore when you want space without drama, block when you want the door shut. For the full picture on blocking, see my guide to blocking someone on Discord, and for muting, here's how muting works.
What changes once you ignore someone
- Their DMs appear darkened, with an Ignore icon next to their messages.
- Their messages are hidden in DMs, group chats and servers. Press Show if you want to read one.
- You'll see a warning screen before viewing their profile, and the profile shows their ignored status.
- If you try to join a voice or video call they're in, you get a warning before connecting.
Two details are easy to miss. Activity visibility is limited rather than switched off, and Discord says some group activity may still show. And if you're not friends, any friend request they send goes to your friend request inbox without an alert, so it's there if you ever want it, but it won't nag you.
Their side doesn't change. They can still see your messages and your profile, and Discord says they won't be able to tell you've ignored them.
It works both ways in shared spaces too. You can still tag them or reply to their messages, and they can still message, tag and interact with you. The difference is that you won't get notifications, and their messages to you stay hidden until you press Show. They can also still see your online presence and activity.
Where you'll find the Ignore option
From someone's profile
On desktop, right-click the user's avatar, select Ignore, then press Ignore again in the confirmation pop-up. On mobile, tap their avatar, tap the ellipsis in the upper-right corner, then Ignore.
In a direct message
- Right-click the user's avatar in the DM.
- Select Ignore.
- Press Ignore in the confirmation pop-up.
On mobile, tap the user in DMs, choose the ellipsis, then Ignore, and confirm.
After you report a message
Right-click the message, press Report Message, and once the report is submitted you can pick Ignore from the More you can do menu. On mobile, long press the message, tap Report, and you'll be offered Ignore after submitting.
In Safety Tools and Safety Alerts
Discord says these tools warn teen users when it detects potentially inappropriate messages, and teens can choose Ignore when they appear.

Finding everyone you've ignored
On desktop or browser, go to User Settings, then Content and Social. Your list is under Accounts you've blocked and ignored.
On mobile, tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner, tap the cogwheel in the upper-right corner, go to Settings, then Content and Social, scroll to Accounts you've blocked and ignored and tap Ignored accounts.
How to un-ignore someone
You can undo it any time. Discord gives three routes on desktop or browser:
- Friends List: right-click the ignored user and select Unignore.
- Their profile: select the ellipsis and press Unignore, or use the Unignore button next to the You ignored them notice.
- Content and Social: go to User Settings, then Content and Social, scroll to the blocked and ignored list and select Unignore next to their name.
On mobile, tap their avatar, then the ellipsis, then Unignore. Or go to Settings, Content and Social, then the blocked and ignored list, and tap Unignore in Ignored accounts.
When ignore isn't enough
Ignore is a comfort setting, not a safety barrier. The person can still message you and see your messages and profile. If someone is harassing you or breaking the rules, ignoring them just means you stop seeing it. That's when reporting matters, and here's how to report someone on Discord. You can still ignore them straight after, from the same menu.
Quick answers
Will someone know I ignored them on Discord?
No. Discord says they won't be able to visually detect in their Discord experience that you've ignored them.
Can ignored users still see my messages?
Yes. They can still view your messages and your profile.
Does ignoring someone remove them as a friend?
No. Friends aren't removed when you ignore them. Blocking is what removes the friendship.
Can I read an ignored user's messages?
Yes. Their messages are hidden, but you can press the Show button to view them.
