WordPress Forum Plugins: 9 Compared (2026)

A WordPress forum plugin adds discussion boards to your own site, so members can register, start topics and reply without leaving it. Some plugins are just forums, some are question and answer boards, and some are full community suites with profiles and groups. Choose the shape you need first, then check installs, rating counts and the last updated date.

Social feeds bury a good conversation within a day. A forum keeps every question and answer on your own site, where people can search them, link to them and find them again months later.

WordPress gives you three ways to do it: a forum plugin, a question and answer plugin, or a community suite that adds profiles and groups around everything. The nine below are listed alphabetically, in no particular order, and each description comes from the plugin's own WordPress.org listing.

How I selected these forum plugins

Every plugin here is in the WordPress.org plugin directory and describes itself as a forum, a discussion board, a Q&A board or a community plugin. I compared what the listings show: active installs, the average rating and the number of ratings behind it, the last updated date and the author. Those are as of Oct 2026 and they change. The free plan column says Yes only where a listing names a free plan in a way I could confirm; every row here says Not stated, so check before you rely on it.

Forum plugin, Q&A board or community suite?

A forum plugin gives you boards, topics and replies, and not much else. That's the right call when the conversation's the point and you don't want members fiddling with profiles.

A question and answer plugin shapes things around questions, which suits a support forum or a knowledge-sharing space. A community suite goes further, with member profiles, groups and directories. BuddyPress describes itself as a suite of components common to a typical social network, which tells you it's a bigger job to set up and run than a single forum.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Rating counts that don't follow install counts

Here's the number that surprised me. CM Answers shows 86 ratings on just 300+ active installs, while bbPress shows 343 ratings on 100,000+ active installs, as of Oct 2026 on the WordPress.org plugin directory. The small Q&A plugin has gathered ratings at a far higher rate than the big forum.

So a rating count is no shortcut to how many sites run a plugin, and an average built on a few hundred votes from a huge install base is a different thing from one built on a small, keen group. Read both numbers, then read the newest reviews to see whether people are still happy with recent versions.

Which forum setup for which community

  • A simple discussion board on an existing site: a lightweight forum plugin.
  • Customer support questions: a question and answer plugin where the best answers are easy to find.
  • A membership community with profiles and groups: a community suite, or a profiles plugin alongside a forum.
  • A busy forum with lots of members: one of the plugins with a large install band and recent updates.
  • A small group you want running today: a plugin that sells itself on quick setup and front end sign up.

A forum needs people, not just a plugin

The plugin is the easy bit. Before you launch, seed the board with a handful of real questions, decide who answers them, and write a short set of house rules. My community moderation playbook covers the rules and the daily checks that keep a forum friendly.

Then answer every post quickly for the first few weeks. Members copy what they see, so an active, helpful owner's what turns a quiet board into a busy one, and you'll learn what your members want to talk about.

My plain advice on choosing a forum plugin

Start with the shape of the conversation: open discussion, questions and answers, or a full member community. A simple forum's easier to run and easier for members to understand, so I'd only reach for a community suite if you really need profiles and groups. It's a bigger job, and you can't easily undo it once members are using it. Check the last updated date as well as the stars, because a forum holds your members' posts for years.

If you're not set on hosting the community on your own WordPress site, my roundup of community platforms compares the hosted options.

Frequently asked questions

What does a WordPress forum plugin do?

It adds boards, topics and replies to your WordPress site so members can register, post and reply without leaving it. Some also add profiles, groups or a question and answer format.

What's the difference between a forum plugin and a community plugin?

A forum plugin focuses on discussion boards. A community suite adds member profiles, groups and directories around the conversation, which is more to set up and look after.

Can I run a support forum on WordPress?

Yes. A question and answer plugin suits support well, and one plugin here describes support forums and knowledge-sharing as its main uses.

Do forum ratings on WordPress.org tell me how popular a plugin is?

Not on their own. On this list a plugin with 300+ active installs has 86 ratings, while one with 100,000+ has 343, so check the install band too.

How do I get people to use my new forum?

Seed it with real questions, answer every post quickly at first, and link to the forum from the pages your members already visit.
