What Are Gifted Memberships on YouTube?

The short version: Gifted memberships on YouTube let a viewer pay for one or more channel memberships and hand them out to other people in the chat or community, usually during a livestream. The gifter pays, the recipient gets the perks for free, and the creator gets the same cut of the money as a normal membership sale. It is a generosity feature dressed up as a hype tool, and both things are true at once.

The basic mechanics

A channel membership on YouTube is a monthly subscription a viewer pays directly to a creator, usually between £1 and £25 a month depending on the tier the creator sets up, in exchange for perks like custom emojis, members-only posts, badges next to their name in chat, and sometimes early access to videos. Gifted memberships are the same product, bought in bulk by one person and given away.

Here is the step-by-step from the gifter's side:

  • They go to a live chat on a channel that has memberships switched on.
  • They tap the gift icon (a small wrapped present next to the chat box) or choose "Gift memberships" from the channel page.
  • They pick how many to gift, usually a set of options like 1, 5, or 20.
  • They pay the full price for however many they choose, in one transaction.
  • YouTube randomly assigns those memberships to active, eligible viewers in the chat at that moment, or lets the gifter choose specific names in some flows.

Recipients get a message saying they have received a gifted membership, and it activates straight away, same perks as if they had bought it themselves. The gift usually runs for one billing cycle unless the recipient chooses to keep paying after it lapses.

Why creators push for this instead of just asking for donations

This is the bit most explainers skip. Gifted memberships are not a separate revenue stream with its own generous cut for creators. YouTube takes the same percentage it takes from any membership, which has historically sat around 30 percent of the sale going to YouTube and 70 percent to the creator, though this can shift depending on region and any temporary promotional terms YouTube runs. A gifted membership is not more profitable for a creator than a regular Super Chat or a direct membership sign-up. It is simply a louder, more visible way of spending money on a channel, which is precisely why creators love it and why some big streamers lean on it so hard during live events.

A gifted membership triggers an on-screen announcement, often with sound, and it can trigger a chain reaction where other viewers feel social pressure to match it. That is the actual function of the feature: it is a social proof mechanic wearing a kindness costume. There is nothing wrong with that, people enjoy giving and receiving gifts, but anyone telling you it is purely altruistic is leaving out the part where it is also one of the most effective on-stream prompts for getting more people to spend money in the next ten minutes.

A worked example

Say you run a mid-size cooking channel with 40,000 subscribers and you have memberships switched on at three tiers: £2.99, £5.99, and £11.99 a month. During a live Sunday roast stream, a regular viewer decides to gift five memberships at the £5.99 tier. They are charged £29.95 in one go. YouTube takes its cut (using the standard 30 percent split as an example, that is roughly £9 to YouTube), and you receive around £21 for that transaction, the same as if five separate people had each bought a £5.99 membership on their own.

The five recipients are picked from active chat participants, their names flash up with a gift animation, and for the next few minutes your chat is full of people saying thank you and tagging the gifter. Three other viewers, seeing the reaction, go and buy memberships themselves off the back of that moment. That knock-on effect, not the gift transaction itself, is usually the real value to you as the creator.

What recipients should expect

If you are on the receiving end of a gifted membership, a few practical things worth knowing:

  • You need to have a Google account and meet YouTube's general eligibility rules (being in a country where memberships are supported, and not already having blocked gifts from that channel).
  • The gift typically covers one month. After that, if you want to keep the perks, you will be charged your own card for the following month unless you cancel.
  • You cannot usually choose which tier you receive if it is a random chat drop. The gifter sets the tier when they buy.
  • Perks like custom emojis and badges disappear the moment the membership lapses, same as any cancelled subscription.

Set a reminder to cancel if you only wanted the one free month, because the auto-renew is switched on by default, same as most subscription services.

Where this fits for small business owners and creators thinking about YouTube

If you are building a channel as part of a wider business, whether that is a UK consultancy posting explainer videos or a US-based coach running weekly live Q&As, gifted memberships are worth switching on once you have a consistent live audience, but they are not a growth strategy on their own. They work as an amplifier of an audience that already shows up and already spends. If your channel does not yet get live chat engagement, turning on gifting will not create that engagement for you.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

I have had plenty of conversations with business owners who assume turning on every monetisation feature YouTube offers is the same as having a monetisation strategy. It is not. Memberships and gifting sit on top of consistent content and a reason for people to watch live, not instead of it. If you are weighing up where AI tools fit into your content and marketing operation, including things like scripting livestreams or analysing what drives gifting spikes, that is a separate conversation worth having with someone who does this for a living, and it is the kind of question I cover with clients through AI consultant for small business work.

The uncomfortable bit nobody puts in the explainer

Gifted memberships can be used, deliberately or not, to manufacture a sense of momentum that is not really there. A creator with a struggling stream can buy gifts for themselves using a second account, or quietly arrange for a friend to gift a batch at the start of a stream, purely to trigger the on-screen celebration and nudge genuine viewers into spending. YouTube does not ban this outright the way it bans fake views, because the money changing hands is real money going to a real platform cut. It sits in a grey zone between marketing tactic and manipulation, much like fake urgency countdowns on a sales page. If you are watching a channel where gifting spikes happen suspiciously early in every single stream, before any real audience excitement has built, it is worth being a little sceptical about what you are seeing.

How it compares to Super Chat and Super Thanks

Super Chat lets a viewer pay to have their message pinned and highlighted during a live stream, Super Thanks is the equivalent for regular uploaded videos, and gifted memberships are about recurring access rather than a one-off highlighted comment. If your goal as a creator is a quick visible spike during a stream, Super Chat does that job cheaper, since viewers can pay as little as £1.49 and still get pinned. If your goal is building a pool of paying members who stick around, gifting is the better lever because it converts a one-off gesture into a free trial for someone who might convert into a long-term paying member once the gift period ends.

Frequently asked questions

Do gifted memberships cost the creator anything?

No, the full cost is paid by the person giving the gift. The creator never pays to give memberships away and simply receives their usual revenue share from the sale, same as any regular membership purchase.

Can you choose who receives a gifted YouTube membership?

In most cases recipients are chosen at random from active participants in the live chat at that moment, though some gifting flows allow a sender to target a specific username. It depends on the stream and the options YouTube has rolled out for that channel at the time.

Do gifted memberships automatically renew?

Yes, after the initial gifted period ends, usually one month, the membership will auto-renew on the recipient's own payment method unless they cancel it before the renewal date, exactly like any other subscription service.

Is gifting memberships the same as donating to a creator?

Not quite. A direct donation or Super Chat is a one-off payment with no ongoing product attached, while a gifted membership buys a specific person a recurring subscription with perks, and the creator earns from it the same way they would from a normal membership sale.
