Western Union in India: Bank, UPI or Cash Pickup? (2026)

Western Union's India pages list bank deposit, a UPI ID and cash pickup, with State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank among its partners. The catch is timing: it says bank transfers may take up to five days, and bank deposit applies only to transfers sent from five named countries.

Plenty of people in India get paid from abroad, whether that's a freelance client, a relative or a customer. When someone says they'll send it with Western Union, the questions are always the same: does it go to my bank, what do I give them, and how long will I wait? I've gone through Western Union's own India pages to answer those without guessing. This isn't me telling you Western Union is the best route, only what the company says about getting money to India.

Bank deposit first: the banks Western Union names in India

Western Union's India page names State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank as featured payout partners, along with a UPI ID option. It also lists Axis Bank, Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Kotak Bank and Federal Bank among others. If your account is with one of those, your sender should find it easy to choose.

If your bank isn't on the list, that doesn't automatically mean it won't work, but I can't tell you either way. Ask your branch whether it accepts Western Union deposits before you give the details to a client.

Sending to a UPI ID in India

This is the part that's specific to India. Western Union says a sender can send money to India directly to a Unified Payments Interface ID, without needing your bank account information. If you already use UPI every day, that could be the least fiddly way to receive. Give your sender your UPI ID exactly as it appears in your app, and double-check it by reading it back.

The details your sender asks you for

The India receive page asks you to give your sender your bank account details including the Indian Financial System Code, usually called the IFSC, plus the purpose of remittance and your address and mobile number. The IFSC is the one people forget, and it's printed on your cheque book and in your banking app.

  • Account number and IFSC for your branch
  • The purpose of remittance, in plain words
  • Your address and mobile number
  • Your name exactly as it appears on the account

Western Union also says the account holder name should match the receiver name. A short name on the payment and a long name on the account is the type of mismatch that causes delays.

How long does it take to reach India?

Western Union doesn't give one speed for everything. Its India page says a mobile wallet transfer may be ready in minutes, cash pickup can be available the same day, and a bank transfer may take up to five days. So when a client says money will arrive today, ask which method they chose.

Partner bank online banking and the MTCN

If your bank is one of Western Union's partner banks, the receive page says you can log in to online banking or the mobile banking app, enter your sender's details and the tracking number, the MTCN, then pick the account you want the money deposited into. A receipt then shows whether the transfer has completed. Not every bank offers this, so look for a Western Union option inside your own app.

Cash pickup in India and what to carry

For cash, Western Union says there are more than 111,000 agent locations in India. You visit one, give your sender's details including the MTCN, and show a government-issued photo ID. The money is released once your details are verified. Bring the original ID, not a photo of it on your phone, in case the agent wants to see it.

A rule about where the sender is sending from

One line on the India receive page is easy to miss. It says the bank deposit service is valid only for Western Union website or app transactions sent from the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany. If your client is paying from another country, that route may not be offered, so ask where they're sending from before you plan around it.

If you also use other ways to get paid

Western Union is one of several options. Many Indian freelancers also receive through Wise's route for Indian recipients or a payment account such as Payoneer for people in India, and some of those are covered on their own pages. I'd compare how each handles your bank and your currency before settling on one.

As ever with money coming in from abroad, ask a local accountant how to record it. I can't give tax or legal advice, and Indian rules on foreign income are a job for someone who knows your situation.
