Twitter (X) Notifications Not Working: Every Fix in Order (iPhone, Android, Web, 2026)

Most X (formerly Twitter) notification problems come down to app permissions, notification settings inside the app, or a background data restriction. Check your phone's notification permissions first, then the in-app settings, then reinstall the app if nothing changes. On web, check your browser's site permissions. Log out and back in if the fixes above don't work.

Why X (Twitter) Notifications Stop Working

Notifications on X (formerly Twitter) can stop working for a handful of reasons, and most of them aren't anything to do with X itself. It's usually your phone settings, your browser settings, or the app needing a restart.

Before you try anything else, work out whether the problem is with all notifications or just some. If you're not getting likes but you are getting DMs, that's a settings issue inside the app. If you're getting nothing at all, it's more likely a permissions problem at the device level.

I'd go through the fixes in the order below rather than jumping around. It saves time and rules things out.

Check Your Phone's Notification Permissions First

This is the most common cause on both iPhone and Android. If the app doesn't have permission to send notifications, nothing you do inside X will fix it.

  1. On iPhone, go to Settings, scroll to X, tap Notifications, and make sure Allow Notifications is switched on.
  2. On Android, go to Settings, then Apps, find X, tap Notifications, and check that notifications are enabled and not restricted.
  3. While you're there, check that Sounds, Banners, and Lock Screen options are turned on too, since some are switched off individually.

If permissions were off, turn them on and send yourself a test by having someone like or reply to a post. It should come through within a minute or two.

Check Notification Settings Inside the X App

Once device permissions are confirmed, move into the app itself. X has its own separate notification settings that control what you get notified about.

Go to your profile icon, then Settings and privacy, then Notifications. From here you can see preferences for push notifications, email notifications, and SMS notifications where available.

Check the Push notifications section specifically. Make sure the toggle is on and that the categories you care about, such as likes, replies, mentions, and new followers, are switched on individually. It's easy for one category to get turned off without you noticing.

Restart the App and Your Phone

This sounds basic but it fixes more than you'd expect. Apps can get stuck in a state where they're technically running but not connected to notification services in the background.

  1. Close the X app fully rather than just leaving it in the background.
  2. Restart your phone.
  3. Reopen the app and log back in if it asks you to.

Do this before you move on to anything more involved. It's the quickest fix and it works surprisingly often.

Check Battery and Background Data Settings

Phones are aggressive about saving battery, and that often means restricting background activity for apps you don't open constantly. If X can't run in the background, it can't receive push notifications.

On Android, go to Settings, Apps, X, and check Battery usage. Make sure it's not set to a restricted or optimised mode that limits background activity. Set it to unrestricted if that option exists.

On iPhone, go to Settings, General, Background App Refresh, and make sure it's switched on for X. Also check Settings, then X, then confirm Background App Refresh is enabled there too, since it can appear in two places.

Low Power Mode on iPhone and battery saver modes on Android can also delay or block notifications. If either is switched on, try turning it off temporarily to see if that's the cause.

Fixes for the X Web App

Notifications on the web work differently to mobile, since they rely on your browser allowing site notifications rather than a phone permission.

  1. Click the padlock or site information icon in your browser's address bar while on x.com.
  2. Check the Notifications permission for the site and make sure it's set to Allow rather than Block.
  3. Refresh the page after changing this.

Some browsers block notifications from all sites by default until you approve them individually, so this step is easy to miss. Also check your browser isn't in a mode that mutes site notifications globally, since that setting sits separately from the individual site permission.

Log Out, Reinstall, and Check for App Updates

If none of the above has worked, it's worth going a step further. Log out of the app completely, then log back in. This forces the app to refresh its connection to your account and can resolve notification syncing issues that don't have an obvious cause.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If that doesn't help, uninstall the app, restart your phone, and reinstall it fresh. This clears out any corrupted app data that might be interfering with notifications.

Also check whether you're running the latest version of the app. Go to the App Store or Google Play, search for X, and update it if an update is available. Older versions sometimes have bugs that get fixed in later releases.

When It's Not Something You Can Fix

Sometimes notifications go down on X's end, not yours. If a lot of people are reporting the same problem at the same time, it's likely a platform issue rather than something wrong with your phone or account.

I can't tell you exactly what's causing an outage when one happens, and I won't guess at features or fixes that don't exist. If you've gone through every step above and nothing has changed, the honest answer is to wait and try again later, since there's nothing further you can do from your end at that point.

Keep an eye on whether other people are having the same issue. If it's isolated to you after trying everything here, contacting X support directly is your remaining option.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting any X notifications on my iPhone?

Check Settings, then X, then Notifications, and make sure Allow Notifications is on. Also check Background App Refresh is enabled, since it's needed for push notifications to arrive.

Why do I only get some types of X notifications and not others?

This is usually an in-app settings issue. Go to Settings and privacy, then Notifications, then Push notifications, and check each category like likes or mentions is switched on individually.

Do X notifications work differently on the web?

Yes. Web notifications depend on your browser's site permission for x.com being set to Allow rather than Block, which is a separate setting from your phone's notification permissions.

What if I've tried every fix and notifications still don't work?

It may be a wider platform issue rather than something on your device. There's no further fix available at that point, so waiting or contacting X support directly is the honest next step.
