Why Is WhatsApp Video Call Not Working on Wi-Fi (And How to Fix It)

The short version: most of the time this is your wifi router blocking the connection type video calls need, not a fault in WhatsApp itself. Turn wifi off and try the call on mobile data first. If it works on data and fails on wifi, the fix is almost always in your router settings, not your phone. Restarting the router and moving off the guest network usually clears it.

Why WhatsApp calls don't work on wifi but work on mobile data

WhatsApp calls use a technology called WebRTC to send audio and video in real time between two devices. This kind of traffic behaves differently to normal browsing. It needs to open a direct, fast, two way connection between your phone and the other person's phone, and it relies on a set of network ports and a protocol called UDP to do it. Most home wifi routers let this through without a problem, but a good number of them, especially ones supplied by an internet provider with strict factory settings, block or throttle UDP traffic by default because it looks unusual compared to normal web pages and streaming video.

Mobile data works because your carrier's network is built to prioritise this kind of real time traffic. Wifi, especially older routers or ones with a lot of built in security filtering, is not always set up the same way. That is the single biggest reason a video call rings, connects the audio, then freezes or drops the picture only on wifi.

How to tell whether it is the wifi or the phone

Before changing any settings, work out where the fault sits.

  • Turn off wifi on your phone completely and start a video call using mobile data only. If it connects cleanly, the problem is your wifi network.
  • Ask the other person to do the same test on their end. Sometimes it is their connection, not yours.
  • Try the call on a different wifi network, such as a neighbour's, a cafe, or your phone's own hotspot. If it works there, the fault is specific to your router.
  • Check if voice only calls work on the same wifi. If voice connects but video does not, the network is likely capping bandwidth rather than blocking the connection outright.

This five minute test tells you whether to spend your time on the router or on the app, which saves a lot of guesswork.

Fix it on the router first

If the test above points to wifi, start here rather than on your phone, because this is where the fault usually lives.

  1. Restart the router. Unplug it for thirty seconds, plug it back in, and wait for all the lights to settle before testing again. This clears a surprising number of connection faults on its own.
  2. Move closer to the router or connect to the 5GHz band instead of 2.4GHz if your router offers both. Video calls need more consistent bandwidth than the 2.4GHz band often provides once several devices are connected.
  3. Open your router's settings page (usually by typing the router's address into a browser, found on a sticker on the router itself) and check for a setting called SIP ALG or a firewall option related to VoIP. Turning SIP ALG off has fixed video call issues on a long list of routers, particularly ones from BT, Virgin Media, and Sky in the UK, and Xfinity or AT&T in the US.
  4. Look for Quality of Service, sometimes shown as QoS, and check nothing is set to deprioritise video or calling traffic.
  5. If you have a mesh wifi system, try connecting to the main unit rather than a satellite or extender, since some extenders add enough delay to break real time calls.

Fix it on iPhone

  1. Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi, tap the small "i" next to your network, and choose Forget This Network. Reconnect and re-enter the password. This clears a stored connection that can quietly go stale.
  2. Go to Settings, then WhatsApp, and check that Cellular Data is turned on even though you are testing wifi, because WhatsApp sometimes switches between the two mid-call and needs both permissions active.
  3. Go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Camera and Microphone, and confirm WhatsApp has access to both. A blocked microphone or camera permission can look exactly like a network fault because the call connects but shows a black screen or silence.
  4. Close WhatsApp fully by swiping it away from the app switcher, then reopen it and try again.
  5. Check for a pending iOS update under Settings, General, Software Update, since WhatsApp's calling feature depends on parts of the operating system that get patched regularly.

Fix it on Android

Android phones vary by manufacturer, but the core steps are the same across Samsung, Google Pixel, and most other brands.

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, find WhatsApp, tap Permissions, and confirm Camera and Microphone are set to Allow.
  2. In the same Apps screen, tap Mobile Data and Wi-Fi (the wording varies by phone) and make sure background data and unrestricted data use are both switched on for WhatsApp.
  3. Some Samsung phones have a battery optimisation feature that restricts apps running in the background. Go to Settings, Battery, then Background Usage Limits, and remove WhatsApp from any sleeping or restricted list.
  4. Forget the wifi network under Settings, Network and Internet, Wi-Fi, tap the network name, then Forget, and reconnect with the password.
  5. Clear WhatsApp's cache (not its data, which would remove chats) through Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, Clear Cache, then retry the call.

Fix it on desktop and WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp video calls also run through the desktop app for Windows and Mac, and through a linked browser session.

  • Check your browser or desktop app has permission to use your camera and microphone. On Mac this is under System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera and Microphone. On Windows it is under Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera and Microphone.
  • If you are on WhatsApp Web through a browser, close other tabs using the camera, such as a video meeting left open in another tab, since only one app can usually hold the camera at a time.
  • Corporate or office wifi is a common cause of desktop call failures because business networks often run stricter firewalls that block the exact traffic video calls need. If you are on an office network, this is very likely the cause, and IT support will need to open the relevant ports rather than you changing anything on your end.
  • Try disabling any VPN running on the desktop and test again, since VPNs frequently strip out the traffic type real time calls rely on.

Public wifi and guest networks

Coffee shop wifi, hotel wifi, airport wifi, and most guest networks are built to keep users separated from each other for security. That separation, often called client isolation or AP isolation, stops your phone from making the direct connection a video call needs, even though normal browsing works fine. This is one of the most common places people report calls failing and it is rarely fixable from your end, since the setting lives on the venue's router. Switching to mobile data is usually the only workaround while you are on that network.

What does not fix it

  • Reinstalling WhatsApp rarely helps if the issue only happens on wifi, since the app itself is not where the fault sits.
  • Changing your WhatsApp profile photo, status, or privacy settings has no effect on call quality and is unrelated to the network layer causing the problem.
  • Buying a new phone will not fix a router that blocks UDP traffic or a guest network with client isolation switched on.
  • Turning on airplane mode and back off only helps if it happens to reset your wifi connection, and it is not a dependable fix on its own.
  • Clearing your entire chat history does nothing for call quality and risks losing photos and messages for no benefit.

When to contact support

Contact WhatsApp support through the app, under Settings, then Help, then Contact Us, if calls fail on every wifi network you try, including a mobile hotspot, and voice calls fail as well as video. That pattern points to an account or app level fault rather than a network one. Contact your internet provider if calls only fail on your home wifi after you have restarted the router and tried the 5GHz band, since that suggests the provider's router is blocking the traffic at a level you cannot change yourself. If it is an office network, raise it with IT support rather than troubleshooting further on your own device, since the fix will be a firewall or port change on their side.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my WhatsApp call ring and connect audio but the video never appears?

This usually means the connection has enough bandwidth for audio, which needs very little, but not enough stable bandwidth for video, which needs far more. It points to a wifi network that is congested or throttling certain traffic rather than a broken app. Try moving closer to the router or switching to the 5GHz band if available.

Does turning wifi off and using mobile data always fix WhatsApp video calls?

It fixes the call in that moment because mobile data avoids whatever the wifi network is blocking, but it is a workaround rather than a repair. If you want video calls to work on your home wifi long term, you need to adjust the router settings covered above, particularly SIP ALG and the wifi band you connect to.

Can a VPN cause WhatsApp video calls to fail on wifi?

Yes. Many VPNs route traffic through a single distant server and strip out or reroute the kind of direct connection video calls rely on. If you use a VPN, turn it off before a call and see if the problem clears. If it does, you will need to either avoid the VPN during calls or find one that specifically supports VoIP and video traffic.

Why do WhatsApp video calls work at home but fail every time on my work wifi?

Business networks are commonly locked down with firewalls that block the ports and protocols video calls use, plus client isolation between devices for security. This is standard practice on office networks and is not something you can fix from your phone. It needs a change from whoever manages the office network.

Is it my phone or the other person's connection when a call keeps dropping?

Test both sides separately. Have each person try the call on mobile data with wifi off. If it works cleanly for both people that way, the fault sits with whichever person's wifi failed the same test. If it still drops on mobile data for one person, the fault is with their phone or carrier signal rather than either wifi network.
