Top Tips on How To Learn Affiliate Marketing and PPC Advertising in 2022!

As affiliate marketers, we always need to find new and profitable ways to improve our campaigns and make the most out of them.  PPC advertising is a great way to do this, but it can be difficult to know where to start.

2026 Update: What Has Changed for Affiliate Marketers and PPC Advertisers

Right, let me be straight with you. When I first wrote this post back in 2022, the landscape looked quite different. Since then, affiliate marketing and PPC advertising have shifted considerably, and if you are still following advice from a few years ago without questioning it, you are probably leaving money on the table. I have updated my thinking here based on what I am actually seeing work right now, in 2026, with real clients and in my own campaigns.

The biggest change I keep coming back to is how AI-assisted campaign management has moved from being a novelty to being genuinely standard practice. Tools like Google's Performance Max have matured considerably, and whether you love it or hate it, you need to understand how it works if you are running PPC. The problem I see constantly is people handing over full control to automated bidding without understanding the inputs that feed those decisions. Your first-party data quality matters enormously now. Feed it rubbish, get rubbish results. Simple as that.

On the affiliate side, the old model of throwing up a thin content site and hoping for organic traffic is well and truly dead. Google's helpful content updates have been relentless, and affiliate sites that survived and grew are the ones investing in genuine expertise, real product testing, and building an actual audience rather than just chasing clicks. If your affiliate content strategy is not built around demonstrating real experience with what you are recommending, you are fighting a losing battle in 2026.

Privacy changes have also reshaped how we track affiliate conversions and PPC performance. Third-party cookies are largely gone in most browsers, and attribution has become messier as a result. My honest advice is to get comfortable with the fact that your data will be imperfect, and start focusing on blended metrics and post-purchase surveys to understand where customers are actually coming from. Chasing perfect attribution will drive you mad.

One thing that has not changed, and this is worth saying clearly: the fundamentals of understanding your audience, writing compelling copy, and testing consistently still matter more than any specific tool or platform update. The people I see struggling in 2026 are almost always those who chased tactics without understanding strategy. If you are new to all of this, start with the core principles covered in this post, then layer in the current platform specifics once you have a solid foundation in place.

In this article, we'll give you some top tips on how to learn affiliate marketing and PPC advertising so that you can make the most out of your campaigns.

What is Pay Per Click advertising and how does it work

PPC advertising (pay-per-click advertising) is a form of online marketing that enables businesses to target potential customers with ads based on the keywords they use.

It is one of the quickest and most effective ways to drive traffic to your website, and it can be very profitable if done correctly.

The only problem is, it can be expensive if you don't know what you're doing. You can improve your search engines placements through good camps.

One way to run Pay-per-click ads is through Google ads, Bing ads, TikTok ads, Facebook ads, or other advertisers by creating the right ad groups.

What are the benefits of PPC advertising

PPC advertising has a number of benefits that can really make a difference to affiliates that utilize it. Affiliates that utilize Pay Per Click usually also have much better success with their Google ads, Facebook ads, and other ad platforms.

Targeting is key

You can target your ads to people who are searching for specific keywords, which means you're more likely to reach people who are interested in what you have to offer.

Flexibility at its best

You can adjust your budget at any time, and you can also change your keywords and ads to improve your results.

It is measurable

You can track how many people see your ad, how many clicks it gets, and how much money you're spending on your PPC campaign. This information can help you improve your campaigns over time.

Drive traffic to your website

PPC ads are displayed on the first page of search results, so they're seen by potential customers who are already interested in what you have to offer.

What are the disadvantages of PPC advertising

Pay-per-click ads also have a few disadvantages. But they can be easily mitigated or avoided if you know the proper steps.

Expensive for newcomers

It can be very expensive if you don't know what you're doing. PPC campaigns can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars per day, so you need to be sure you're setting a budget that you're comfortable with.

Needs a lot of time to set up and run

You need to constantly monitor your campaigns and make changes as needed. This can be a full-time job, so be sure you're prepared to devote the necessary time to it.

Risky but profitable

You can lose a lot of money if you don't know what you're doing. Be sure to do your research and understand the risks before you start a campaign yourself. Hopefully, you will minimize all risks by following some of our tips!

As you can see there are a couple of disadvantages that can hamper your PPC ad performance, but nothing you should be scared of.

What Are The Different Types of PPC Ads?

PPC advertising comes in many different forms, but the most common are text, image, and video adverts.

  • Text ads are very basic and usually incredibly cheap.
  • Images are better than text, and they can be effective in getting people to click through to your website.
  • Videos are the most expensive form of advertising, but they can be very effective in getting people to take action.

When you're setting up a campaign, you'll need to choose which type of ad you want to use. Each type of ad has its own advantages and disadvantages, so you'll need to experiment to see which one works best for your business.

Text Ads

Text adverts are the most basic form of Pay-per-click advertising, and they usually consist of a headline and a few lines of text.

Text creatives are relatively cheap to create, and they can be very effective if you choose the right keywords. However, they can be easy to ignore, and they may not stand out from the other ads on the page.

Image Ads

Images are more visually appealing than text ads, and they can be effective in getting people to click through to your website. Pictures are usually more expensive than text, but they can be worth the investment if you're targeting a highly competitive keyword.

Make sure you have a competent designer on your team as well so you can make sure that you always have engaging creatives. Most platforms like Google ads prefer this way of advertising.

Video Ads

Video adverts are the most expensive form of PPC advertising, but they can be very effective in getting people to take action. Video creatives are usually more expensive than image ads, but they can be worth the investment if you're targeting a highly competitive keyword.

Find experts that can help you with creating videos, as they are difficult to do right. You can find people with the right skills on sites like Fiverr, or by searching for affiliates with more skills on forums or social groups.

Should You Use Pay-Per-Click For Google Ads and other Ad Platforms?

Now that you know the ins and outs of PPC advertising, it's time to decide if it's right for your business on Google Ads, Facebook, or any other platform. If you're selling a product or service online, then PPC is definitely worth considering.

Is it effective?

It's an effective way to reach potential customers, and it can be very profitable if done correctly. However, if you're not selling anything online, then you may want to consider other marketing channels.

Pay-per-click can be a great way to reach potential customers, but it's not the only way. If you're not sure if PPC is right for your business, then we suggest talking to a marketing expert. They'll be able to help you decide if PPC

PPC Keyword Research

Before you start a Pay-per-click campaign, you need to do your keyword research. Keyword research is the process of finding and choosing the right keywords for your campaign. The right keywords will be ones that are relevant to your business and that have a high search volume.

Keyword research for PPC is an ongoing process that requires continual attention. Your campaign will only be successful if you focus on refining and optimizing your keywords using Google Ads.

Finding the Right KWs

A good keyword list for Pay-per-click should include the following:

  • High search volume keywords: These are the foundation of your campaign and should be included in every ad group.
  • Low competition keywords: These will help you get your foot in the door and start generating traffic.
  • Long-tail keywords: These are more specific and often convert better than general keywords.
  • Negative keywords: These help you filter out unwanted traffic and improve your campaign's ROI.

When you're first starting out, it's important to focus on high search volume keywords. These are the foundation of your campaign and should be included in every ad group.

Once you've built up a presence in the search results, you can start targeting low competition keywords. These will help you get your foot in the door and start generating traffic.

You can use keyword research tools like Google AdWords Keyword Planner or AHREFs or anything else to help find KW that rank high with search engines.

Those KW should also not have huge competition stats as they can make ranking high on search engine results pages hard.

You'll need to research which keywords are most relevant to your business, and you'll also need to choose keywords that are not too competitive.

The Ad Group Ads Themselves

Third, you need to write effective ads. Ads that are well-written and relevant to your keywords will perform better than those that are not. If you are planning on launching other sorts of ads you will need to get help with video or image creatives. The better they are the more success you will have.

Finally, you need to track your results. PPC campaigns can be very complex, so it's important to track your results so that you can improve your campaigns over time. As with any sort of campaign, testing and researching is the key to success!

  • They help you test different keywords. One of the great things about PPC is that it allows you to test different keywords. Test different keywords on your ad groups and landing pages. Find out which ones work better for you.
  • You can track your conversions. PPC allows you to track your conversions. This is the number of people who take action on your website after clicking on your ad. This is a great way to measure the effectiveness of your campaigns and make changes accordingly.
  • A good PPC campaign gives you an edge over your competitors by promoting your ad groups and landing pages even more.

Some tips for improving your Pay-per-click campaigns

There are a few things you can do to improve your PPC campaigns.

  1. Use negative keywords. Negative keywords are the words or phrases that you don't want your ad to show up for. For example, if you sell men's shoes, you might want to add the word "women" as a negative keyword so that your ad doesn't show up when someone searches for "women's shoes."
  1. Use ad extensions. Ad extensions are additional information that you can add to your ads, such as your phone number or address. This can help improve your click-through rate (CTR) and help you get more leads.
  2. Use different ad types. There are a variety of ad types available, such as text, images, and videos. You can experiment with different ad types to see which ones give you the best results.
  3. Test, test, test. Always test your ads. Try different combinations of keywords and ad types to see what works best for your business.
  4. Some other tips for improving your PPC campaigns include:
  • Using ad rotation to test different ad versions
  • Creating custom audiences for remarketing
  • Optimizing your landing pages or LPs
  • Using dayparting to schedule your ads
  • Bidding on branded terms to reach people who are already familiar with your product or service
  • The most important thing is to keep testing and tweaking your campaigns until you find what works best for your business.
