Tile vs AirTag: Which Item Tracker Suits Your Keys and Bags?

AirTag suits iPhone owners who want the Find My network, exact on-screen directions and the option to share a lost bag's location with airlines. Tile suits Android users and mixed-phone families, especially if you already share locations in Life360. If everyone in your house has an iPhone, pick AirTag; if not, Tile is the one that works for everyone.

Pop one on your keys, another in your bag, and stop turning the house upside down every morning. That's the idea behind both. I read Apple's AirTag page and Find My listing, Tile's App Store listing and the Tile site, which now opens Life360's pages.

What AirTag does

Apple's page says the new AirTag has a speaker 50% louder and up to 1.5x greater Precision Finding range. Ultra Wideband lets your iPhone or Apple Watch lead you straight to it, showing the exact distance and direction, so it's quick to find keys down the back of a sofa.

Further away, AirTag uses the Find My network, which Apple says can use more than a billion iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to report its location, anonymously and with encryption. You can put it in Lost Mode, and you can temporarily share its location with others, including more than 50 airlines, if your luggage goes missing.

What Tile does

Tile's Google Play listing now calls it Tile by Life360, and its App Store listing covers the basics: ring your Tile when it's in Bluetooth range, see its last known location on a map when it isn't, and double press the button on your Tile to make your phone ring, even on silent. Newer Pro, Mate and Slim Tiles carry a QR code so a stranger who finds your keys can reach you.

Tile works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and its Premium plan adds Smart Alerts when you leave something behind. Tile's own site now opens Life360's pages, and Life360's Free membership shows your Tiles on the Life360 map alongside the family.

The phone and family detail

The deciding question is what phones your household uses. AirTag sets up with an iPhone or iPad and leans on Apple's network. Tile's app runs on both iPhone and Android, so a whole family can share trackers whatever phones they use.

Apple's page has one more point worth knowing: AirTag is built to discourage unwanted tracking, so if someone else's AirTag travels with you, your iPhone or Android phone will alert you and the AirTag will play a sound.

Who each tracker suits

AirTag suits iPhone families, frequent flyers who'd like to share a bag's location with an airline, and anyone who wants arrows on screen leading them to their keys. Tile suits Android users, mixed-phone households, Life360 families and people who'd like a button that rings their phone. If you travel for work, these travel safety tips for employees and my ChatGPT prompts for planning travel sit well alongside a tracker in your bag.

My advice on Tile or AirTag

If you and everyone you'd share with use iPhones, get AirTags. Precision Finding and the size of the Find My network are hard to match. If anyone in the family uses Android, or you already use Life360, choose Tile so everyone can see the same trackers. Put the first one on whatever you lose most, usually keys, and add more once you see how often it saves you.

Do you make trackers or find-my apps? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
