As of October 2026, PlayStation Plus costs $10.99 a month for Essential, $16.99 a month for Extra and $19.99 a month for Premium in the US. Paying for 12 months up front is cheaper: $79.99 for Essential, $134.99 for Extra and $159.99 for Premium.
PlayStation Plus is Sony's membership for PS4 and PS5 players, and it's the membership that includes online multiplayer on a PlayStation. There are three tiers and three billing lengths, which makes nine prices in total. Here they are, straight from PlayStation's own US page, with what each tier adds.
PlayStation Plus prices by tier and length
| Tier | 1 month | 3 months | 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
PlayStation's page says the 12 month plan works out cheaper than paying month by month on every tier, and it marks Premium's 12 month plan as the best value. All plans continue until you cancel.
What each PlayStation Plus tier includes
Each tier includes everything in the one below it. This is how PlayStation's comparison breaks down:
| Feature | Essential | Extra | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Games | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Online Multiplayer | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Exclusive Discounts and Packs | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cloud Storage and Share Play | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Game Catalog | No | Yes | Yes |
| Ubisoft+ Classics | No | Yes | Yes |
| Classics Catalog | No | No | Yes |
| Game Trials | No | No | Yes |
| Cloud Streaming | No | No | Yes |
| Sony Pictures Catalog | No | No | Yes |
Essential: the minimum for online play
If you only want to play online with friends, Essential is the tier for you. PlayStation says online multiplayer is included with all PlayStation Plus memberships, and Essential adds monthly games, members only discounts, exclusive content packs and cloud storage. It doesn't include the big Game Catalog, so you'll still buy most new games yourself.
Extra: the Game Catalog tier
Extra is where PlayStation Plus starts to feel like a library. It adds the Game Catalog, which PlayStation describes as hundreds of games included with your membership, plus Ubisoft+ Classics. PlayStation values Ubisoft+ Classics alone at $7.99 a month. If you get through a lot of games, Extra can replace several full price purchases a year.
Premium: streaming, trials and classics
Premium adds four extras on top of Extra:
- Classics Catalog: older games from PlayStation history.
- Game Trials: try out some of the biggest recent releases before you buy them.
- Cloud Streaming: stream select PS5 games straight to your PS5 or PlayStation Portal remote player, with no download wait, including select games you own.
- Sony Pictures Catalog: PlayStation lists up to 100 movies to watch on demand at no extra cost.
Cloud Streaming is the feature that matters most for people with slow downloads or small storage. Game Trials are the best way to avoid buying a game you'd only play once.
1 month, 3 months or 12 months?
The billing length you choose matters as much as the tier. Here's how I'd think about it:
- 1 month suits you if you're testing PlayStation Plus, want one Catalog game finished, or only play online with friends now and then.
- 3 months suits a season of play, for example over the holidays or while a group of friends is hooked on the same game.
- 12 months suits anyone who plays most weeks. On every tier, PlayStation shows the 12 month plan as a discount on paying monthly.
Because the subscription continues until you cancel, the 12 month plan also means one renewal date a year to remember rather than twelve. Put it in your calendar either way.
PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass?
If you're choosing a console partly on subscription cost, it helps to see them side by side. Xbox's US page lists Game Pass Essential at $9.99 a month, Premium at $14.99 and Ultimate at $22.99. So PlayStation Plus Essential at $10.99 and Game Pass Essential sit close together, while the top tiers differ more. The bigger difference is what's inside: Game Pass Ultimate includes new games on day one, while PlayStation Plus Premium leans on classics, trials and cloud streaming. My list of Game Pass games worth starting first shows what the other side looks like in practice.

How to pay less for PlayStation Plus
- Decide which features you'll use. If you only play online, stop at Essential.
- If you know you'll stay all year, buy the 12 month plan rather than 12 single months.
- Use the 3 month plan if you're only subscribing for a season or one big game in the Catalog.
- Check the monthly games before you cancel, as they're part of what you're paying for.
- Remember the plan renews until you cancel, so turn off renewal in your account if you only want one period.
If you're still choosing a console, my PS5 vs Xbox Series X comparison covers the hardware, and this list of 2 player PS5 games for the couch is a good test of whether you need online play at all.
My verdict
Essential at $79.99 a year is the right buy if you mainly play online and buy the games you want. If you play lots of different games, Extra at $134.99 a year is where the value is, because the Game Catalog does most of the work. Premium at $159.99 a year only pays off if you'll use Cloud Streaming, Game Trials or the classics. Whatever tier you choose, the 12 month plan beats paying monthly if you're staying.
