TikTok Spark Ads are ads made from organic TikTok posts, either your own or a creator's with their permission. Every view, comment, share, like and follow the ad earns is credited to the original post, so the engagement stays on the video after the campaign ends.
That's the big difference from a standard TikTok ad. A normal ad is a separate piece of creative. A Spark Ad boosts a post that already lives on a profile, so it looks and behaves like any other video in the feed.
Here's how Spark Ads work, what they support and the limits TikTok sets, from TikTok's Business Help Center, read in October 2026.
Why businesses use Spark Ads
TikTok lists three benefits. Spark Ads help build brand trust by using organic posts in your ads. They let you use a creator's content and audience to drive results with fewer resources. And because every bit of engagement goes back to the original post, the effect lasts beyond the campaign.
In plain terms: the likes you pay for don't vanish when the ad stops. They sit on the post for anyone who finds it later.
Spark Ads vs standard TikTok ads
| Spark Ads | Standard ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Creative | An organic post from your account or an authorised creator | Uploaded ad creative |
| Where engagement goes | To the original organic post | To the ad |
| Tapping the profile photo or name | Opens the video owner's profile | Goes to the landing page or app install page |
| Follow button | The plus sign on the profile photo follows the account | Not part of the ad interaction |
| Music | The sound and music disc open the music page | Not listed by TikTok |
| Display name and text | Taken from the organic post and can't be edited in Ads Manager | Set when you build the ad |
Which objectives Spark Ads support
TikTok says Spark Ads work with these objectives:
- Auction buying: Reach, Traffic, Video Views, Community interaction, App promotion, Conversions, Lead generation and Sales.
- Reach and Frequency buying: Reach, Traffic and Video Views.
The rules and limits TikTok sets
These are the specifications from TikTok's own page. Most are generous, but two of them catch people out.
- No restrictions on video ratio, resolution, file type, duration, bitrate or file size for organic videos.
- Ad captions can be left blank, and account tags, emoji and hashtags are allowed.
- There's a 10 minute maximum on videos that can be sparked.
- Organic posts that have been banned are rejected in Ads Manager too.
- A video has to be un-authorised as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account.
- Each TikTok Ads Manager account can support a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads.
The one to remember is the deletion rule. If a creator wants to remove a video you've sparked, the authorisation has to be removed first. Agree that process with creators before you start.
How Spark Ads authorisation works
You can spark your own posts, or another creator's posts once they authorise you. TikTok says you can customise how long an authorisation code lasts to fit the campaign. Set it to cover the campaign plus a little room, and no longer. A short, clear window is fairer to the creator and easier to manage.
Captions and translations on Spark Ads
TikTok has added a translation layer to Spark Ads. Viewers can tap See Translation to read the ad's caption and subtitles in their preferred language, then See Original to switch back. TikTok notes that not every Spark Ad supports translation and caption components, for technical reasons, and that you can opt out of the feature. If your caption carries a precise offer or a legal line, check how it reads in translation, or opt out.
Where Spark Ads fit in a campaign
TikTok's help pages cover setting up Spark Ads in manual and search campaigns and in Smart+ campaigns, so you're not limited to one campaign type. I'd use them in the campaign whose objective matches the post: a how-to video for traffic, a lively product clip for sales, a creator's honest review for community interaction.

The metrics you'll see
Spark Ads report extra engagement numbers that standard ads don't. TikTok lists paid likes, paid shares, paid comments and paid followers, each counted within 1 day of someone seeing the ad, plus paid profile visits, music clicks and anchor clicks. Paid followers is the one I'd watch. It tells you whether the ad is building an audience or just buying a moment.
Who should use Spark Ads
If you already post on TikTok and some videos do well organically, Spark Ads are the obvious next step. Boost what's already working rather than paying to test something new. If you don't post yet, start there first: Spark Ads need organic posts to exist. Make sure your profile is set up as a business, which my guide to a TikTok personal vs business account explains, and read the TikTok ads best practices for e-commerce if you sell online.
My verdict
Spark Ads are the format I'd start most small businesses on. They look native, they keep every like and follow on your post, and they let you put your budget behind videos that have already proved they work. Keep authorisation windows short, agree the deletion rule with any creator you work with, and judge the results on paid followers as well as clicks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Spark Ads and normal TikTok ads?
Spark Ads use an existing organic post and credit all engagement to that post. Standard ads use uploaded creative, and taps on the profile or name go to your landing page instead of the video owner's profile.
Can I use another creator's video as a Spark Ad?
Yes, with their authorisation. TikTok says you can use organic posts made by other creators once they authorise you, and you can customise how long the authorisation code lasts.
How long can a Spark Ad video be?
TikTok sets a 10 minute maximum on videos that can be sparked. Otherwise it places no restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type, bitrate or file size for organic videos.
Can you delete a TikTok video that's running as a Spark Ad?
Not straight away. TikTok says the video needs to be un-authorised as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account.
How many Spark Ads can one account run?
TikTok says each TikTok Ads Manager account can support a maximum of 10,000 Spark Ads.
