TikTok Personal vs Business Account: Which One Should You Make?

Make a personal account if you're a creator, a public figure or just want to post for fun, and a business account if your main goal on TikTok is to promote a product or service. The biggest practical difference is music: business accounts only get TikTok's Commercial Music Library, while personal accounts get the full sound library.

People often switch to business because it sounds more professional, then wonder why the trending sound they wanted is greyed out. So let's look at what each type gives you before you tap anything.

The two main account types side by side

The insight most guides skip: TikTok's own Help Center recommends using two separate accounts if you want to promote a business and post personal content. Flipping one account back and forth between types is the thing it advises against.

Why the music difference matters so much

Songs in TikTok's general library are cleared for personal entertainment, not for advertising a business. That's why business accounts are limited to the Commercial Music Library, a separate catalogue cleared for commercial use. If your content strategy depends on jumping on trending songs, a personal account gives you far more to work with. If you're a brand, the commercial library keeps you on the right side of music rights, which matters if you ever plan to turn a post into an ad.

What a personal account is best for

  • Creators building an audience around their own personality, skills or niche.
  • Anyone who wants the option of a private account.
  • People hoping to join TikTok's creator monetisation programmes, which TikTok lists as available to General accounts that meet the criteria.
  • Freelancers and coaches whose 'business' is themselves. Many do well as creators first.

What a business account is best for

  • Shops, restaurants, agencies and product brands.
  • Businesses that want contact details, lead buttons and marketing tools on the profile.
  • Companies planning to run TikTok ads alongside organic posts.
  • Brands that want business verification, which TikTok treats as separate from the blue verified badge.

TikTok also has more specialised types, including Verified Business, Organization accounts for teams, and TikTok for Business accounts for Ads Manager. Most small businesses only need to think about the first two. If you're weighing up ads, our guide to TikTok promotion types for small businesses covers the options.

How to switch account type

  1. Go to your Profile and tap the Menu (three lines).
  2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Account.
  3. Tap Switch to Business Account (or Switch to Personal Account) and follow the prompts.

Menus move around between app versions. If you can't see that option, search your settings for the word account type and it usually appears.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing

  • Am I the product, or is a company the product? People-led accounts usually fit personal.
  • Do I need trending songs? If yes, personal.
  • Do I want customers to email, call or book from my profile? That points to business.
  • Will I run ads in the next few months? Business tools make that simpler.
  • Would I ever want to go private? Only personal accounts can.

What changes when you switch to business

Switching isn't just a label. A few things change straight away, and it's better to know before you tap:

  • Sounds you used in older videos may stop being available for new posts, because you're now limited to commercial sounds.
  • Your profile becomes public. Business profiles can't be private.
  • You get business tools such as contact options and business insights, and easier access to ads.
  • Some creator programmes are built for personal accounts, so check whether any you rely on still apply.

Switching back to personal returns the full music library going forward. It doesn't edit the sound on videos you've already posted.

A quick decision guide

You areAccount I'd pick
A hobby creator or personal brandPersonal
A coach, consultant or freelancer who is the face of the brandPersonal to grow, business once you run ads
A shop, cafe, salon or product brandBusiness
An agency posting for clientsBusiness, one per client brand
Someone who wants a private accountPersonal

Whatever you pick, put your effort into the content. Account type sets the tools you get, not whether people watch.

Common myths about TikTok account types

  • 'Business accounts get shadowbanned.' TikTok doesn't say that. Reach depends on the content and how viewers respond.
  • 'You need a business account to sell.' Plenty of creators earn through affiliate links and brand deals on personal accounts, where those programmes are offered.
  • 'Verified business means the blue tick.' TikTok says business verification and the verified badge are separate processes.
  • 'Switching resets your followers.' Your followers and videos stay; what changes is the tools and the music you can use.

Most of the confusion comes from creators sharing what happened to one account. TikTok's own help pages are the safer place to check the rules.

My verdict

For most solo creators, coaches and freelancers, I'd start with a personal account and grow an audience first. For a shop or a brand, choose business and accept the commercial music library as the cost of staying legal. And if you're both a person and a brand, follow TikTok's own advice and run two accounts rather than switching one back and forth. If you're going to run several accounts, read how many TikTok accounts you can run at once first.

Frequently asked questions

Is a TikTok business account better than a personal account?

Not automatically. Business accounts get marketing tools but only the Commercial Music Library. Personal accounts get the full music library and creator programmes. Pick the one that matches your goal.

Can I switch from a business account back to personal on TikTok?

Yes, from Settings and privacy, then Account. TikTok recommends separate accounts rather than switching back and forth.

Do business accounts get less reach on TikTok?

TikTok doesn't say business accounts are shown less. The real difference you'll notice is the smaller music library.

How many followers do I need for a link in my TikTok bio?

TikTok says General accounts with at least 1,000 followers can post a website link on their profile.
