TikTok Privacy Settings: Every Control and What It Does

TikTok's privacy settings live under Profile, then the Menu button, then Settings and privacy, then Privacy, and as of October 2026 they're a set of separate switches rather than one control. The main ones decide who can download your videos, who can Duet, Stitch or reuse your posts, who TikTok suggests your account to, and whether your content is for people 18 and over only.

The catch: some switches are bundled, some can't be reversed

Two details trip people up. First, reuse of content is one bundle. TikTok says that if you turn Duet off, it also affects who can Stitch, create stickers with your posts and add your post to their Story. You can't pull one of those out and leave the rest.

Second, some changes only work going forward. Turn downloads off and anything saved while they were on stays on the other person's device. Turn audience controls on for your whole account and every post is tagged automatically, with no way to switch it off for an individual video or LIVE.

The private account switch has its own walkthrough: here's how to make your TikTok account private and what still shows afterwards.

Downloads: switching off only stops new saves

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top.
  3. Tap Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Privacy, then tap Downloads.
  5. Turn the Video downloads setting on or off.

With downloads on, people can save your videos or photos to their device, convert videos to live photos or GIFs and share them straight to other platforms. With downloads off, they can't do any of that with posts you've already shared or future ones, though they can still share your content by link or direct message. You keep the download options for your own content either way.

If your account is private or you're under 16, Video downloads is off by default and you can't turn it on. Switch the account to public and you get the choice back.

Reuse of content: Duet, Stitch, stickers and Stories together

Go to Privacy, tap Reuse of content, then Allow reuse of content from, and choose Everyone or Friends (followers you follow back). You must have a public account to let others reuse your posts. For a single video, turn Allow reuse of content off under More options on the Post screen before posting, or under Privacy settings on a post that's already up.

Under Reuse of content history you can view or remove the Duets and Stitches made with your video. Be careful here: Remove all posts permanently removes your original post and every associated Duet and Stitch video. If there are more than 10 posts, you may have to verify the account is yours. TikTok suggests downloading your original first if you want to keep a copy.

Audience controls: 18 and over only

Audience controls let creators keep content away from anyone under 18. Tagged content still has to follow the Community Guidelines and still goes through moderation.

  • Whole account: Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Audience controls, then turn the Age 18 and older setting on. Your profile, future videos and LIVE videos become unavailable to under-18s.
  • One video: on the post screen, tap More options, turn Audience controls on, review the terms, tap OK, then post.
  • One LIVE: tap the Add post button, tap LIVE, tap Settings, turn Audience controls on, review the terms, tap OK, then tap Go LIVE.

Viewers must be at least 18, logged in, and have their date of birth registered on their account to see audience-controlled content. Anyone with Restricted Mode turned on may not see it at all, whatever their age.

Who TikTok suggests your account to

Suggest your account to others has three options: Contacts, Facebook friends, and People who open or send links to you. They're on by default if you're 18 or older. Even with all three off, TikTok says your account may still be suggested to people you follow, interact with or share mutual connections with.

Contact syncing has a quiet catch. If you remove TikTok's access to your contacts in your phone settings, or switch syncing off, TikTok stops syncing but keeps suggesting accounts from the contacts it already has. To clear those, use Remove previously synced contacts under Sync contacts and Facebook friends.

Manage topics sits nearby under Content preferences. Move the slider for each topic and tap Save; it only changes your For You feed, not your Following feed, profile or inbox. Location is handled separately, and this guide shows how to turn off location on TikTok.

TikTok privacy defaults for teens

TikTok accounts are for people at least 13, and some features aren't available until 16 or 18. Here are the defaults TikTok lists by age.

SettingAges 13 to 15Ages 16 to 17
AccountPrivate by default, can be changedPrivate by default, can be changed
Direct messagesNot availableAvailable; message requests from others unless you choose Don't receive
Video downloadsOff and can't be changedOff by default; a public account can turn it on
Duet and StitchNo one, can't be changedPrivate: no one. Public: Friends by default, can change to Everyone
CommentsFriends only, can't be changedPrivate: Followers by default. Public: Everyone by default
Stickers from your postsNo onePrivate: no one. Public: Friends by default
Suggest your accountOff, can be turned onOff, can be turned on

Under-18 accounts also aren't suggested to mutual connections. If a parent or guardian manages the account through TikTok Family Pairing, that can change which of these a teen can adjust alone.

My verdict on TikTok privacy settings

I'd spend five minutes in Privacy rather than flipping the private switch and assuming you're done. Turn Video downloads off if you don't want copies of your videos travelling, decide who can reuse your content, and switch off any Suggest your account to others options you're not comfortable with. Use audience controls on individual posts unless your whole account is adult content, because the account-wide version can't be undone video by video. And if you've synced contacts in the past, clear them out with Remove previously synced contacts.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the privacy settings on TikTok?

Tap Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, then Privacy. Audience controls and Content preferences sit separately under Settings and privacy.

If I turn off TikTok downloads, are saved copies deleted?

No. Videos or photos downloaded while the setting was on stay on the other person's device.

Can I turn off Duet but keep Stitch on?

Not through the reuse setting. TikTok says turning Duet off also affects who can Stitch, create stickers with your posts and add them to their Story.

Can I undo audience controls for one video?

Not if you turned them on for your whole account. Your content is then tagged automatically and can't be switched off for individual videos or LIVE videos.
