Threads Insights: Where to Find Them and What Each Number Means

To see Threads insights for a post, go to your profile, tap the post, then tap the number of views below Thread at the top of the screen. For your whole profile, go to your profile and tap Insights in the top left. Threads shows views, unique viewers, follows, audience details and where your views came from.

Threads insights have grown from a simple view count into a full dashboard, with an AI summary at the top and an audience tab underneath. If you're deciding whether Threads is worth your time as a business, these numbers are how you'll know.

Here's where to find them and what each metric means, using the definitions from Instagram's help centre.

Post insights, metric by metric

When you open a post's insights, Threads starts with a short AI-powered summary of how the post did and why. Below that you'll see:

  • Views: total views of the post, from followers and non-followers.
  • Viewers: the number of unique Threads profiles that saw it at least once.
  • Profile visits: how many times your profile was visited from this post.
  • Follows: how many profiles followed you from this post.
  • Views over time: the post's views since it went up, compared with your typical post views.
  • Followers and Non-followers: how many views came from each group.
  • Who saw your post: countries, cities, gender, age, and the top interests and communities viewers have added to their profiles.
  • Top sources of views: the share of views from Home, your profile, Activity and Search.

The benchmark most people skip

Views over time is the most useful number on the screen, and it's easy to miss what it's comparing against. Instagram's help page says your typical post views are calculated as the median of your last ten posts. So the chart isn't telling you whether a post did well in general; it's telling you whether it beat your own recent middle.

That's a fairer test for a small account. One post that did unusually well won't drag the benchmark up the way an average would, and a quiet week won't make everything look like a win.

Profile insights: Overview and Audience

Tap Insights on your profile and you'll get a short description of how your profile is doing, summarised by Meta AI, then two tabs.

TabWhat it shows
OverviewViews, Viewers, Net followers, Interactions (likes, replies, reposts and shares) and a list of your threads you can filter and sort
AudienceViewers, Followers who saw your posts, Non-followers, demographics, top interests and communities, and most active times

Net followers is the honest growth number: Instagram defines it as the profiles that followed you minus those that unfollowed you or left Threads in the period. Most active times reflect your current time zone and use data from the last 30 days.

Why your view count might look high

Instagram's post information page explains that the view count above a post includes views on Threads and on Instagram, for example when Meta suggests your post to people on Facebook or Instagram. So a post can pick up views from people who never opened Threads. That's still reach, but it's worth remembering before you compare it with another app's numbers.

Reply counts work differently too. The count on a thread you start includes every reply in the thread, not just direct replies to your first post.

Activity is not the same as insights

The activity icon at the bottom of the app shows who liked or replied to your posts and who followed or mentioned you, with categories at the top to filter the list. If your profile is private, follow requests show there too. It's useful for replying quickly, but it's a feed, not a measurement. Use Insights for the numbers and Activity for the conversation.

Some numbers are still settling

Instagram notes that some insights metrics are estimated and in development, including likes, replies, reposts, quotes and views. Treat small changes from one day to the next with caution, and judge trends over a few weeks rather than a single post.

What I'd check each week

  • Views over time on your last few posts, to see which beat your own median.
  • Follows and profile visits per post, to see which topics bring new people in.
  • Non-followers versus followers, to see whether you're reaching beyond your circle.
  • Net followers for the week, the number that tells you whether you're growing.

If you're still weighing Threads up against other platforms, my Threads vs Twitter guide looks at where each fits for a business, and how to check Instagram reach covers the Instagram side of the same question.

My advice

Ignore the headline view count and go straight to views over time and follows. One tells you whether a post beat your own normal, the other tells you whether it brought someone new. Those two numbers will tell you more about what to post next than any other screen in the app.
