How to See Instagram Insights (App, Posts and Computer)

To see Instagram insights, you need a public account. In the app, open your dashboard from your profile to see Views, Interactions and New followers, or tap a post and then View Insights for that post. On a computer, choose Dashboard on instagram.com, and Instagram says you can look back over the past 90 days.

Instagram insights are the only honest scoreboard you get for your own account. Likes show you a little. Insights show you how many people saw a post, who they were, and what they did next. If you run a small business, a side hustle or a creator profile, they're the difference between guessing and knowing.

I've followed Instagram's Help Centre here. One old help article still says insights are only for businesses and high-engagement accounts. Newer articles say otherwise, and I've gone with the newer ones.

What you need before Instagram insights appear

Instagram's help pages set out the requirements plainly:

  • A public account. It can be a personal account or a professional one (business or creator).
  • If you recently made your account public, you may not be able to view past insights.
  • If you switch back to a private account, you lose access to insights. Instagram says you can regain access to past data if you switch back to public within 90 days.

If the insights options are missing, a private account is the first thing to check. It's the usual reason, and it takes seconds to confirm.

Seeing your Instagram insights overview in the app

According to Instagram, the app shows an overview with four headings: Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared. The path to it can vary a little between app versions, but it starts from your profile, where you look for your dashboard or the professional tools.

  • Views is the number of times your content was played or displayed.
  • Interactions counts actions like likes, comments, saves and shares.
  • New followers shows how your following is changing.
  • Content you shared counts what you posted in the timeframe you picked.

Tap any heading to see more detailed numbers. Tap the (i) in the top right corner and Instagram shows you definitions for each metric, which is handy because some of the names sound alike.

Choosing the date range for Instagram insights

Use the dropdown menu at the top of the screen to pick a preset or a custom timeframe. Instagram says the window can be anywhere within the past 90 days. On instagram.com the presets are the last 7, 14, 30 or 90 days, and a custom range needs a start and end date at least a day apart.

If you can't see audience details for the last 7 days, try a longer preset such as the last 30 days or the last 90 days. Instagram says audience demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 viewers or engaged accounts, so a quiet week can come up empty.

Viewing insights for a single Instagram post

Sometimes you only care about one post. Instagram's article on post insights gives these steps:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap the post you'd like to look at.
  3. Tap View Insights.

Instagram lists Views, Interactions and Profile activity for posts. Profile activity is the number of actions people take on your profile after engaging with that post, which is a good clue to whether a post sends people anywhere. The help page adds that insights for posts stay available for up to two years.

How to see Instagram insights on a computer

Instagram also lets you view account and content insights on instagram.com. The steps are:

  1. Select Dashboard from the left-hand menu.
  2. If you have a professional account, select Insights below For professionals. If you have a personal account, select Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
  3. From the Insights dropdown menu, choose Account or Content.
  4. Open the date dropdown to change the range.

Account shows the big picture, such as follower trends. Content lets you look at how individual pieces performed. It's a comfortable way to review things on a bigger screen, especially if you're preparing a monthly report for a client.

What each Instagram insights number really tells you

A few notes so you don't misread them. Instagram explains that Viewers is the number of unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once, while Views can include repeat plays by the same accounts. So Views will usually be the higher number. Accounts engaged counts unique accounts that interacted with your content, and Instagram breaks it into followers and non-followers for some content types.

Instagram also labels some of these metrics as estimated and in development, and notes that a metric may be introduced gradually, so it might not be available to you yet. If a heading in this guide is missing from your screen, that's the likely reason. For follower trends such as growth, top locations, age range and most active times, Instagram says you need at least 100 followers.

If you want help turning these into decisions, my guide to reading your Instagram dashboard and the numbers goes further, and ten ways to improve your Instagram engagement shows what to try once you've spotted a weak area.

If you can't find Instagram insights

Work through these in order:

  • Check your account is public. Private accounts don't get insights.
  • Update the Instagram app, then close and reopen it.
  • Try the computer route on instagram.com, because the Dashboard option sits in a different place.
  • Switch to a professional account if the professional tools are what you're hunting for. Menu names vary by app version, so look for words like Professional dashboard or Insights.
  • Remember that some metrics are introduced gradually, so a number you've read about may not have reached your account yet.
  • If something clearly looks broken, report it in the app via Profile, Menu, Help, Report a Problem.

Where Instagram insights fit in your routine

I'd keep it simple. Once a week, open your overview, pick the last 7 days, and write down Views and Interactions. Once a month, pick the last 30 days and look at your best post. Then make more of whatever that post was. It's a short job, and over a few months it teaches you more than any guide can.
