No, Threads doesn't notify anyone when you view their profile, and there's no list of profile visitors. People only find out if you follow, like, reply, repost, quote, mention or message them.
Threads is built on top of Instagram, so it's natural to wonder whether it tracks who visits your profile, or whether someone will know you've been looking at theirs. It doesn't, and they won't. Threads doesn't send a notification when you view a profile, and there's no list of profile visitors. A few actions do notify people, though, and they're easy to do by accident.
Viewing a Threads profile is private
You can open anyone's public Threads profile, scroll through their posts and replies, and leave without them knowing. There's no visitor list in Threads, and there's no setting that turns one on. The same is true on Instagram, where profile views aren't shown to the account owner either. Apps that claim to reveal who viewed your Threads or Instagram profile don't work, and many want your login details, so avoid them.
My guide to finding out who viewed your Instagram profile explains why these tools can't deliver what they promise.
What does send a notification
- Following the account, including a follow request if their profile is private.
- Liking a post or reply.
- Replying to a post, or quoting it in a post of your own.
- Reposting their post.
- Mentioning them with their username.
- Sending a message through the linked Instagram account.
The like button sits right under each post, so a stray tap while scrolling is the most common way people give themselves away. If it happens, you can undo the like, but they may already have seen the notification.
Private profiles
If the account is private and you don't follow it, you won't see their posts, and requesting to follow sends them a notification. Simply opening the profile page and seeing that it's private doesn't notify them.
Does Threads use profile views in suggestions?
Threads suggests accounts to follow based on things like who you follow on Instagram, what you interact with and what's popular. There's no public sign that viewing a profile makes you appear in that person's suggestions. If you follow each other on Instagram or share interests, you may see each other suggested regardless.
What about Instagram stories?
Threads doesn't have stories, so there's no viewer list there. Instagram is different. If you watch someone's Instagram story, your name can appear in their story viewers. That's the most common way people learn someone has been looking. My guide to spotlighting an Instagram story covers another Instagram feature people worry about, and what the other person can or can't see.
Keeping your Threads browsing low-key
- Scroll with care near the like and repost buttons.
- Check whether you've accidentally followed: the button on their profile will show it.
- Don't open their Instagram stories if you don't want to appear in the viewer list.
- Use Threads' mute or hide options if you want to see less of someone without them knowing.
- Skip any app that promises to show profile visitors.
Accidental follows and how to undo them
If you tap Follow by mistake, unfollow straight away. They'll still have received a notification, and it may sit in their activity list for a while. There's no way to recall it. On a private account, cancelling the request removes it from their pending list, but if they've already looked, they've seen it.
If someone is bothering you
If you're worried about someone viewing your profile, remember that public Threads profiles can be seen by anyone, including people who don't have an account in some cases. You can make your profile private so only approved followers see your posts, restrict or block accounts, and limit who can reply to you. Those controls work better than trying to track visitors, which Threads doesn't allow.
Why people think Threads tracks visitors
A lot of the confusion comes from Instagram stories, where viewer lists are real, and from rumours that spread every time an app updates. Posts claiming that Threads now shows profile visitors usually lead to an app or a login page that's after your account. Threads publishes changes through its own app and Meta's help pages, so treat anything else with caution.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Another source of confusion is the numbers Threads does show you. You can see how many people viewed your own posts and how they engaged, as totals. Those insights are about your content, not a list of named people who visited your profile. They're useful for working out what to post, and they don't reveal individual visitors.
Searching for someone on Threads
Searching for a name or username on Threads is private too. The person isn't told, and your recent searches are only visible to you. As with profile views, it's only when you interact that they'll know.
How Threads fits with Instagram
Your Threads profile is linked to your Instagram account, and you sign in with Instagram. Viewing someone's Threads profile doesn't show up anywhere on their Instagram either. If you want the bigger picture of how Threads works and what it's for, my guide to what Threads is covers the basics.
The short answer
Threads doesn't notify anyone when you view their profile, and nobody can see a list of profile visitors. People only find out if you follow, like, reply, repost, quote, mention or message them, or if you watch their Instagram stories. Look as much as you like, and keep your thumb steady near the buttons.
