Tally Alternatives (2026): 8 Form Builders Compared

The best Tally alternatives are other free-leaning form builders, a polished conversational option, doc-style builders that handle payments and signatures, open-source tools you can host yourself, and workflow suites for approvals and documents. Start with the job Tally can't do for you, because almost nobody leaves a free, unlimited form builder for the forms themselves.

Tally's headline is hard to beat: unlimited forms and submissions, forever free, no coding needed. Its page adds two words that matter, though: fair use. Unlimited on a free plan always comes with a line somewhere, and if you're collecting thousands of entries a week, read Tally's fair use terms before you assume you'll never need to move.

So people rarely leave Tally to save anything. They leave for a different look, payments and signatures, approvals, self-hosting or compliance. Below are eight alternatives, in no particular order, sorted alphabetically, each described from its own website. My guides to online form builders for business and Google Forms alternatives take a wider view.

Why people leave a free form builder

  • The form needs to feel like a conversation: one question at a time, built for completion.
  • You need to take payments or signatures: doc-style builders with payments and signing inside.
  • Your data must sit on your own servers: open-source or own-your-data tools.
  • Forms trigger approvals and documents: workflow suites that do more than collect answers.
  • You just want a second free option: builders that also state unlimited responses for free.

If none of those describe you, stay where you are. A free tool that works is a good tool, and moving forms means updating every link, embed and automation that points at them.

Look, feel and the people filling it in

Tally's forms look like a clean document, which suits most internal and simple public forms. If your form is the first thing a new customer sees, the look matters more. Conversational builders show one question at a time and feel closer to a chat, while template-heavy builders give you a head start on layouts you'd otherwise design yourself.

Think about who's filling it in and on what device. A long survey for staff on laptops can be plain. A lead form opened from an Instagram bio on a phone needs to be short, quick and friendly, or people won't finish it. If your form is really a survey, what to look for in a web survey tool is worth a read.

Open source and your own servers

Two tools here go further than a free plan. One is free and open source to self-host, with managed cloud plans if you'd rather not run it yourself. The other is built around your own servers and database. That matters if you work in a regulated field or simply don't want customer answers sitting in someone else's system.

The trade-off is that you, or a developer you trust, look after the hosting, backups and updates. If nobody on your team wants that job, the managed option is the safer route.

Payments, signatures and approvals

Here's where the doc-style and workflow builders earn their place. Taking a deposit, getting a contract signed and routing an approval can all happen inside the form, so you don't need a separate payment tool and e-signature app stitched together with automations.

That's fewer moving parts, and fewer places for an order or a signature to go missing. Ask each vendor which payment providers they support in your country before you build anything important, and test a full submission from start to finish.

Choosing yours in five steps

  1. Write down the one thing your current form can't do.
  2. Match it to a camp: conversational, payments and signing, own servers, or workflow.
  3. Rebuild your busiest form in two shortlisted tools, using the same questions.
  4. Send both versions to five colleagues or friends and compare completion and the data you get back.
  5. Check export options so your responses can leave with you if you switch again.

My advice on replacing Tally

Don't switch for looks alone unless your form is customer-facing and completions matter. For internal forms, free and simple beats beautiful. Switch when you need payments, signatures, approvals or your own servers, because those are jobs a lighter builder wasn't made for. And whatever you choose, keep a copy of every response somewhere you control.

Do you make form, survey or feedback software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tally free forever?

Its page says unlimited forms and submissions, free forever, under fair use, as of Nov 2026. Read the fair use terms if you collect large volumes.

Which form builders can I self-host?

In this list, one builder says it's free and open source to self-host, and another is built for your own servers and database. Check each vendor's hosting docs.

What's a conversational form?

A form that shows one question at a time, like a chat, rather than a long page of fields. It can feel friendlier on a phone.

Can a form builder replace an e-signature tool?

Some can. Several builders here list signatures or e-signature alongside forms, which covers simple contracts and consent forms.

How do I move my forms from Tally?

Rebuild your most-used form first, test it, then switch the link. Export your existing responses before you close anything.
