SAP vs Salesforce: ERP Roots or CRM First?

Choose SAP if your priority is running finance, procurement, HR and supply chain on one ERP, with customer experience tools that draw on that same business data. Choose Salesforce if your priority is sales, service and marketing, with AI agents through Agentforce and small business suites you can try for free. The two meet in the middle at sales software: SAP Sales Cloud is an agentic AI CRM for sales automation, guided selling and forecasting, which puts it up against Salesforce's own Sales Cloud.

These two giants are often compared as if they sell the same thing. They don't, so I read SAP's company, ERP, S/4HANA, CRM and Sales Cloud pages and Salesforce's what is Salesforce, suites and company story pages to set out where each one starts.

Where each company starts

SAP describes itself as a global leader in enterprise applications and business AI, trusted for over 50 years to unite business-critical operations across finance, procurement, HR, supply chain and customer experience. Its centre of gravity is ERP: SAP Cloud ERP is pitched as an enterprise management solution with real-time insights and embedded AI across finance, supply chain and procurement, using preconfigured processes based on industry best practice.

Salesforce calls itself an AI CRM. Its product range starts with sales, service, marketing and commerce, then adds Agentforce AI agents, Tableau for analytics and Slack for collaboration. For a business whose biggest problem is finding and keeping customers rather than running a supply chain, that's a very different starting point.

SAP's case: CRM that knows your back office

SAP's argument for its CRM is context. It says its Autonomous CX connects marketing, commerce, sales and service to your existing SAP foundation, and grounds every customer interaction in finance, supply chain and enterprise data so AI can see the full picture. SAP Sales Cloud adds AI agents and next-best actions for sellers, insight-led pipeline management and predictive forecasting. If you already run SAP ERP, that link to stock, orders and invoices is the main reason to keep CRM in the same family.

Salesforce's case: CRM first, agents on top

Salesforce's pitch is breadth on the customer side. Its Starter Suite bundles sales, service, marketing and commerce tools with lead, account, contact and opportunity management, built-in sales flows and email marketing, and Pro Suite adds more customisation, automation, quoting and forecasting. Above that sit the Sales Cloud editions and Agentforce, where AI agents work alongside staff. Each suite carries a try for free option on its plans page.

Questions for your shortlist

  1. Is your main headache finance, stock or supply chain? Start with SAP's ERP.
  2. Is it pipeline, customer service or marketing? Start with Salesforce.
  3. Already running SAP ERP? SAP Sales Cloud keeps customer and business data together.
  4. Small business with a handful of sellers? Compare SAP Business One with Salesforce's Starter Suite.
  5. Want to try before you speak to sales? Salesforce's suites offer free trials, and SAP Sales Cloud has a try option.

My advice on SAP or Salesforce

Most small and mid-sized businesses comparing these two are really asking a CRM question, and for that I'd start with Salesforce: it's built around sales and service and you can trial a suite quickly. If you're choosing an ERP to run the whole company, or you already run SAP, SAP's CRM tools make more sense because they sit on the same data. Don't buy either for features you won't use in the first year; map your top three processes first.
