Samsung vs iPhone: Which Phone Suits the Way You Live?

A Samsung Galaxy suits people who want choice and gadgets: an S Pen, a built-in Privacy Display on the S26 Ultra and several folding phones to pick from. An iPhone suits people who already live with a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch and want everything to pair with a tap, plus end-to-end encrypted iMessage and FaceTime. If your other devices are Apple, stay with iPhone; if you want to tinker, or you're on Android already, a Galaxy is the smoother fit.

For years the easy line was that Samsung made the folding phones and Apple didn't. Apple's own line-up now lists iPhone Duo, which it calls foldable, posable and durable, with the largest display of any iPhone, so the choice is closer than it used to be. I read Apple's iPhone and switching pages, Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra and phones pages, and its Smart Switch page.

What Samsung builds into the S26 Ultra

The standout on Samsung's page is the Privacy Display, which it calls the world's first built-in privacy screen on a mobile. You decide what to hide from people at your side: the whole screen, specific apps, or incoming notifications and passwords. If you check messages or work email on the train, that's a practical reason to look at a Galaxy.

The S26 Ultra also has the S Pen, a 6.9-inch display, a 200 MP wide camera, a 5000 mAh battery and charging to 75 percent in around 30 minutes, according to Samsung's spec panel. Galaxy AI can edit photos for you, such as adding party props to a picture of your dog.

What keeps people on iPhone

Apple's case rests on things working together. Its switching page talks about one-tap pairing for AirPods, AirDrop listing nearby friends by name, and regular iOS updates that keep an iPhone feeling new for years. iMessage and FaceTime calls are encrypted end-to-end, and RCS messaging gives richer media and read receipts to friends who don't use iMessage.

Safety features are a quiet strength. Apple says an iPhone can send messages via satellite when you've no signal or Wi-Fi, text emergency services, and detect a severe car crash and call for help if you can't.

Switching in either direction

Both companies make leaving the other one easy. Apple's Move to iOS app runs on your Android phone and transfers contacts, messages, WhatsApp content, photos, videos, email accounts and call history, faster over a USB-C cable. Samsung's Smart Switch goes the other way and says it can bring over photos, contacts, schedules, settings, account info and even authentication credentials, with no extra app needed when you're coming from an iPhone.

Who each phone suits

A Galaxy suits note-takers who'd use the S Pen, privacy-minded commuters, and anyone curious about folding phones with three to choose from. An iPhone suits people already invested in Apple devices, families who share photos and locations with Apple tools, and anyone who wants the same experience for years. If you're moving photos between devices, here's how to get iPhone photos onto a Mac, and if your friends use both, here's how to schedule a WhatsApp message on Android or iPhone.

My advice on Samsung or iPhone

Count the other gadgets in your house. If there's a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch, an iPhone will make all of them more useful, and the new iPhone Duo means you don't have to leave Apple to try a foldable. If you're on Android, love a stylus or want the Privacy Display, stick with Samsung. Either way, the switching tools are good enough that you're not locked in.

It's a built-in screen feature that hides the whole screen, chosen apps, or notifications and passwords from people viewing at an angle. Samsung calls it the first of its kind on mobile.

Can I move WhatsApp chats from Android to iPhone?

Yes. Apple says the Move to iOS app transfers WhatsApp content along with contacts, messages, photos and more.
