In this blog post I am going to show you how to get found on AI search when you have no budget for links and no patience for the slow game everyone keeps telling you to play.
Here is the thing that started it.
A few weeks ago a founder emailed me. Sports tech, based in the US, ready to pay. Nothing unusual about a lead, except for how he found me. He did not Google me. He did not read a LinkedIn post. He asked ChatGPT who could help him with AI, and ChatGPT handed him my name.
I have been doing this work for over twenty years and that was the first time a paying lead landed in my inbox because a machine recommended me. It will not be the last, and I want to show you why it happened, because the reason is boring and completely repeatable.
So I did what I always do when something works by accident. I reverse engineered it. I pulled my own site apart to work out what it was doing right, and then I checked it against everything the clever people are saying about AI search. What I found is that most of the advice is aimed at people with money to spend, and almost none of it is aimed at you and me.
The short version
To get found on AI search you do not need to buy links or wait months for authority to build. AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite pages that answer a question clearly, come from a source they already trust, and are easy to lift word for word. If your site is that source, you get named. Mine did, and a paying client arrived because of it. The mechanics are on your side of the screen, not in someone else's inbox.
Why I dug into this
For months the honest answer to "how do I get cited by AI" has been the same, and it is the answer nobody wants: build authority, do PR, go on podcasts, wait. All true. All slow. And all of it needs either money or months, usually both.
I do not have a budget for links. I say that plainly because most advice pretends you do. And I did not want to sit around for a year hoping a journalist mentions me so that ChatGPT eventually notices.
Then the sports tech founder showed up, and it broke the story I had been telling myself. Because I had not done any outreach for him. No podcast. No paid link. My site did the work while I was asleep. So the question changed from "how do I earn authority" to "what was my site already doing that made a machine pick me", and that is a question I can answer and you can copy.
This is the same instinct that had me pulling my site apart earlier this year. If you want the messy version, I wrote about how I ended up de-indexing over a thousand pages to save my website, and it is the least glamorous work I have ever done.
What AI search rewards
Let me clear up one thing first, because a lot of noise online gets this wrong.
You will see people say backlinks are dead and AI only cares about mentions. That is half right and it is sold as a whole truth. Google AI Overviews still leans on the same ranking signals it always has, links included. But ChatGPT, Perplexity and the rest work differently. They pull a handful of sources, read them, and quote the ones that answer the question best. Being mentioned in context on a site they trust matters more than a raw link count.
Here is the part that changed how I think about my own business. My site is one of those trusted sources. Yours can be too. When a machine quotes a page, that page becomes a tiny recommendation engine, working every hour without a single email sent.
- A clear answer to a real question, written like a human would say it out loud.
- A source the AI already trusts, which is any site with a track record and a real person behind it.
- Text that is easy to extract, so a short answer near the top beats a clever answer buried in paragraph forty.
None of those three things costs money. All three are decisions you make on your own pages. That is the whole game, and it is why I stopped waiting for permission from the authority fairy.
What my site was doing right, step by step
I went through my own pages the way I would go through a client's. Here is what I found, in the order that matters.
It answered the question in the first breath
The pages that get cited do not warm up. They answer fast. The first hundred words say the thing, plainly, before any story or context. A machine reading the page finds the answer immediately and has something clean to quote.
So I stopped hiding the point. Every page that matters now leads with a direct answer, in normal words, near the top. If you want to get found on AI, this is the single highest impact change you can make today, and it takes an afternoon.
It came from a real person with a track record
AI tools weigh who is behind a page. Not in a mystical way. They look for signs that a real, experienced human wrote it. My name, my history, my face, the fact that I have been writing about marketing since before some of these tools existed.
You cannot fake twenty years, but you can surface the years you have. Put your name on your work. Write in the first person. Say what you have really done. I talk about the clients and the failures because they are proof, and proof is what a machine is scanning for when it decides whether to trust you.
It was structured so a robot could read it
Behind the scenes my pages carry the plumbing that AI likes. Question and answer blocks. A short summary near the top. The kind of structured data that tells a machine "this bit is the answer, this bit is the FAQ". You do not see it. The AI does.
If that sounds technical, it is, a little. But it is a one time setup per page, and once it is there it works forever. This is the sort of thing I build into a one person AI business, and it is why I keep saying the boring work wins.
It gave the AI something worth quoting in the first place
Here is the one that most people skip. Machines love original numbers, clear comparisons, and definitive lists. Give them a statistic with a year and a source, or a proper "best tool for this job" table, and you become the thing they cite rather than the thing they skim past.
I published my own data study on AI search demand, and it does more heavy lifting for me than any guest post ever has. You can do the smaller version this week. One honest comparison, one real number from your own work, written into plain sentences so it survives being copied out.
It let me check the result, not guess
I do not like guessing, so I built a free tool that shows you whether AI can see and cite you. You point it at your site and it tells you the truth. If you want to know where you stand before you change a thing, run your site through my free tool to check if you get found on AI, then fix what it flags.
It shows you whether AI can see and cite you, and where you are being skipped. I would rather work from the truth than a hunch, and now you can too.
What happened next
The headline result is the one I opened with. A paying client, sourced by ChatGPT, with no outreach from me. One lead does not make a system, so let me be honest about the rest.
On the numbers, my traffic has roughly doubled over the last quarter, and a growing slice of it arrives through AI tools rather than a blue link on Google. The commercial pages, the ones that describe what an AI consultant for small business really does, are the ones I am now optimising hardest, because those are the pages I want a machine to hand over when someone asks for help.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The honest caveat, because I always give you the honest caveat. This is not a magic switch. Most of my pages still get ignored by both Google and the AI tools, and I am working through that pile the slow way. But the pages that do the five things above punch far above their weight, and the trend is going in one direction.
What I would do differently if I started today
I would stop chasing volume for its own sake. I spent a long time publishing a lot, and most of it sank without a trace. If I started again I would publish fewer pages and make each one genuinely worth quoting.
I would build the original data sooner. My study should have come a year earlier. It is the single asset that keeps earning.
And I would stop waiting for outreach to save me. Outreach and PR still matter, and I am doing that work in the background. But it is slow and it is partly out of my hands. The on page work is fast and it is entirely in mine, so I would start there every time, the same way I rethought my whole approach to AI lead generation.
Should you do this too
If you sell anything to people who ask AI tools for recommendations, yes, and quickly. The buyers are already there. The founder who emailed me is not an early adopter, he is just someone who typed a question into ChatGPT instead of Google, like millions of people now do.
You do not need my twenty years or my traffic to start. You need one page that answers one real question better than anyone else, written by a real you, structured so a machine can read it. Then another. The compounding is quiet but it is real, and it works alongside the slow authority game rather than waiting for it.
A simple plan to get found on AI this week
You do not need a project plan or a budget. You need an afternoon and one page you care about. Here is the order I would follow if I were starting from scratch today.
- Rewrite the first hundred words of your best page so it answers the core question plainly, before any story.
- Put your name, face and history on it, so a machine can see a real person with a track record stands behind the words.
- Add a short question and answer block near the top, and the structured data that labels it, so the page is easy to lift.
- Publish one original thing worth quoting, a real number from your own work or an honest comparison table.
- Check the result with a tool, then repeat on the next page.
Do that on one page and you have started. Do it on ten and you have a system. That is the whole route to get found on AI, and none of it waited on a single email or a single pound spent on links.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to get found on AI search
It means an AI tool like ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews names your site or your business when someone asks it a question in your area. Instead of ranking on a results page and hoping for a click, you get quoted directly inside the answer. It is closer to being recommended than being listed.
Do I need backlinks to be cited by AI
Not in the way you have been told. Google AI Overviews still uses links as one signal, but tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity care more about whether your page answers the question clearly and comes from a source they trust. A page with no paid links can absolutely get cited if it is the clearest answer from a credible person.
How long does it take to get found on AI search
Faster than traditional SEO in my experience, because you are optimising for extraction rather than only for ranking. On page changes can show up in AI answers within weeks. Building the underlying trust still takes time, so treat the quick wins and the slow authority work as two tracks running at once.
What is the fastest change I can make today
Rewrite the first hundred words of your most important page so it answers the core question plainly, before any story. Machines quote the clearest answer near the top. This one change costs nothing and often does more than a month of link building.
Can AI search really send paying customers
Yes. A founder found me through ChatGPT and became a paying client with no outreach from me. It is one lead, not a flood, but it is real money from a channel that did not exist a couple of years ago, and the number of people using AI to find help is only rising.
The last word
For two years I have been told the same story about authority. Earn it slowly, pay for it, or wait. And there is truth in that, so I keep doing the slow work in the background.
But a machine recommended me to a paying client while I did nothing, and when I looked under the bonnet the reason was not glamorous at all. Clear answers. A real person. Clean structure. Something worth quoting. A way to check the result.
That is not a growth hack. It is just good, honest work on pages you already own, and it is available to you today whether you have a marketing budget or not. Start with one page. Make it the best answer to one real question. Let the machines do the rest.
Work with me
If you want help building this into your own business, that is what I do. I work with a small number of business owners at any one time, rebuilding their marketing around AI so they stop paying agencies and stacks of software for things they can do themselves in a fraction of the time. You can see how that works on my Work With Me page.
And every week I send a newsletter to fifteen thousand entrepreneurs and business owners. Same voice as this, half the length, and it is where I share the experiments before they reach the blog. You can sign up to the newsletter here. No fluff, no fake urgency, one email a week.
