Payoneer in Kenya: Shillings, M-Pesa and Bank Withdrawals

Payoneer works in Kenya, and its pricing page names Kenya among the countries supported for local-currency bank withdrawals at a flat fee. Converting to shillings from another currency costs up to 2%, shown before you confirm. Payoneer's pages I read don't mention M-Pesa, so plan around a bank account.

Kenya is one of the few African countries that Payoneer names on its pricing page for local-currency bank withdrawals, which makes it a more straightforward story than some of its neighbours. Still, a lot of Kenyan freelancers ask about shillings, M-Pesa and what the real cost is. Here's what Payoneer's pages and the Central Bank of Kenya say, and where the gaps are.

Kenya is on Payoneer's local-currency withdrawal list

Payoneer's pricing page lists the countries supported for withdrawing to a bank account in the same country as yours, in local currency, at 1.50 US dollars. Kenya is named on that list, alongside a short run of other countries. That's the strongest official Kenya fact I found, and it's the reason a Kenyan bank account is a sensible first thing to link.

There's a catch in how to read it. The flat fee is for withdrawals where the money is already in the right currency, which is how Payoneer frames it. If your balance is in another currency, the conversion rules below apply instead.

What Payoneer has said about receiving Kenyan shillings

A 2013 Payoneer announcement said businesses in Kenya could receive global bank transfers in Kenyan shillings, at a cost of only 2.99 US dollars per payment at that time. It described Global Bank Transfer as a way to receive payments from participating partners to your bank account in over 200 countries and more than 50 currencies.

That's old, and Payoneer's fees have changed since, so don't treat the 2013 figure as today's price. What it does show is that a shilling option for receiving has been on Payoneer's radar for a long time. If a client pays you through a platform that supports Payoneer, check the receiving options it offers instead of assuming.

Converting to shillings: the fee ranges

If you withdraw to a bank account in a different currency from your balance, Payoneer says the fee applied will be up to 2%. Its pricing page also lists 1.2% - 4% for withdrawing to a bank account in the recipient's local currency with no conversion, with a minimum fee of up to 20.00 US dollars or equivalent possible in some countries.

Payoneer says you see the applicable fee and exchange rate before you confirm a withdrawal, and that where conversion applies the fee is included in the rate. Use that screen to compare options. The number that matters is how many shillings reach your bank account, not the headline rate.

M-Pesa: what Payoneer's pages don't mention

Many Kenyans think in terms of M-Pesa. I read Payoneer's withdrawal, pricing and receiving account pages, and they discuss bank accounts. They don't mention M-Pesa. That doesn't prove it's unavailable in some form, but I wouldn't build a plan around it. Withdraw to a bank first, then move money to mobile money yourself.

What the Central Bank of Kenya says about foreign currency accounts

The Central Bank of Kenya's Foreign Exchange Guidelines say foreign currency accounts may be opened and operated by Kenya residents and non-residents. That's relevant if you'd rather keep dollars in a dollar account at a Kenyan bank than convert every payment straight away. The guidelines are an older document, so ask your bank what it offers now and what it needs from you.

A simple habit helps here. Before your first real payment, make a small withdrawal and write down three things: the rate shown, the fee shown, and the amount your bank credits. If the last figure is lower than the first two suggest, the gap is your bank's charge, and that's a conversation to have with the bank rather than with Payoneer.

How long, and whose name must be on the account

Payoneer's withdrawal page says withdrawals typically reach your local bank account within one to three business days, and that new bank accounts are typically reviewed and activated within three business days. It also says the bank account should be in your name or your registered business name, and may need to match your Payoneer account details.

So link your account early and use your own name. If you've got a business, it's the registered business name that matters. Mixed-up names are the most common reason a withdrawal gets held.

The annual fee and the comparison with other Kenya options

Payoneer's pricing page says an annual account fee of 29.95 US dollars is only charged if the account receives less than 6,000 US dollars, or the equivalent, in any 12 consecutive months. If you're a part-time freelancer, that's the number to plan around.

If you're weighing tools, my guide to PayPal in Kenya covers what PayPal's own pages say for the same country. For how Payoneer handles other markets, see Payoneer in Nigeria, where the official picture is much thinner, and Payoneer in India, where withdrawals are automatic.
