Patreon in Kenya: Bank, PayPal or Payoneer? (2026)

Kenyan creators have more than one way to be paid by Patreon. Patreon lists Kenya for a bank transfer in shillings and also names Kenya in its PayPal supported countries article. The catch is cost: the bank route takes 0.25 US dollars plus 1.55% per payout, and Patreon's tax table shows VAT at 16% for Kenya.

Kenya is one of the easier places to get paid by Patreon, mostly because you're not forced down a single road. I went through Patreon's help pages and Equity Bank's own PayPal page to see what each route involves, and I've kept to what those pages say. Where they stop, I stop too.

Three payout routes that include Kenya

Patreon's payout guide lists Kenya in its table of countries for bank transfers from US dollars to local currency, with KES as the currency. Its separate PayPal supported countries article lists Kenya in the Middle East and Africa section. And Patreon says PayPal and Payoneer Wallet are available in every country on its bank list, with your bank country separate from where you live.

That gives a Kenyan creator a straight choice between a direct shilling bank transfer, PayPal, and a Payoneer account. Each has different costs, so pick on cost and convenience rather than habit.

The direct bank transfer into shillings

For a bank payout from a US dollar balance, Patreon charges 0.25 US dollars plus a 1.55% conversion fee on each payout, and the minimum is 10 US dollars. It states that no other conversion fee is added. It also says the rate applied can vary slightly depending on when your withdrawal is processed, as exchange rates change through the day.

The Kenyan shilling uses the code KES and is divided into 100 cents, according to the Central Bank of Kenya entry on Wikipedia. Registration needs only bank details, namely your account number and the name on the account, and Patreon doesn't support special characters in names.

If PayPal appeals, Patreon's own cost for a US dollar payout is 1% of the amount, minimum 0.25 US dollars, capped at 20 US dollars, with a 10 US dollar minimum payout. PayPal may charge extra when you move the money on to a bank. That second step is where Kenya has something useful.

Equity Bank Kenya says you can link PayPal in Equity Mobile or Equity Online and withdraw instantly to a linked Equity Bank account in Kenyan shillings or US dollars. It says its service covers transfers of up to 10,000 US dollars each, with no daily limit, and that PayPal charges 1.95 US dollars to verify a linked card, refunded once verification succeeds. My page on PayPal in Kenya goes through the account side in more detail.

One practical point: your bank country is separate from where you live, according to Patreon. If you ever bank abroad, the same list still applies to the bank's country. Patreon says the form needs just the account number and the account name, so enter both exactly as your bank shows them.

Kenya's VAT line in Patreon's tax table

Patreon collects VAT or GST on some payments in places that have rules for non-resident suppliers of digital services, and it publishes a table. Kenya is in it with VAT at 16%. Patreon says tax depends on the type of benefit and where the buyer is. The tax is added to what the fan pays, so it isn't your income.

W-8BEN, and why Kenya isn't on the IRS treaty list

Patreon says all creators who aren't US citizens must submit a W-8BEN, or W-8BEN-E for companies, before they can pay out. It's under Settings, Payouts and Taxes, then Tax settings. The IRS list of United States income tax treaties doesn't list Kenya, so I wouldn't count on a treaty rate. A Kenyan accountant can tell you how this income is treated locally, which I can't.

Pricing fans in dollars, fees and the Payoneer backup

On fan payments, Patreon's dollar-payout table charges 2.9% plus 0.30 US dollars for cards and Apple Pay, rising to 3.9% plus 0.30 US dollars if a non-US member uses PayPal. Its list of other payout currencies runs from EUR to SGD and never reaches KES, so expect to price in dollars.

There's also a 2.5% member-side conversion fee whenever your payout currency isn't the one the fan pays in. Staying on US dollars sidesteps it for dollar-paying fans. For the Payoneer route, Patreon charges 1.00 US dollars per payout with a 25 US dollar minimum, and Payoneer in Kenya covers what happens on that side.

Holds, speed and limits for your first Kenyan payout

Patreon puts a 5-day hold on your balance whenever you add or change a payout method. After that, a payout typically takes 1-5 days to show up, and you can only start one every 24 hours. For most bank transfers Patreon sets no payout limit, though your bank or processor may. Compare the whole fee picture in what Patreon takes from creators before you set prices.
